Objective To compare effect of heated and humidified high-flow oxygen therapy with nasal catheter (HFNC) and non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) on treating patients with acute type Ⅰ respiratory failure. Methods A total of 56 patients with type Ⅰ respiratory failure were randomly divided into HFNC group (n =28) and NIPPV group (n =28).The HFNC group was treated with heated and humidified high-flow oxygen therapy with nasal catheter, while NIPV group was treated with non-invasive positive pressure ventilation. The indexes such as tracheal intubation rate, mortality within 30 days, total hospitalization time and total oxygen therapy time were compared between the two groups. Results In the HFNC group, tracheal intubation rate, mortality within 30 days, total hospitalization time were significantly lower and shorter than the NIPPV group (P< 0.05).There was no significant difference in the time without breathing machine between the NIPPV group and the HFNC group (P > 0.05).Conclusion Compared with NIPPV,application of HFNC in treating patients with type Ⅰ respiratory failure can reduce tracheal intubation rate and mortality within 30 days, and shorten the hospital stay.
