2.Nuclear localization of Obox4 is dependent on its homeobox domain.

OBJECTIVE: Oocyte-specific homeobox 4 (Obox4) is preferentially expressed in oocytes and plays an important role in the completion of meiosis of oocytes. However, the Obox4 expression pattern has not been reported yet. In this study, we investigated the subcellular localization of Obox4 using a green fluorescent protein (GFP) fusion expression system. METHODS: Three regions of Obox4 were divided and fused to the GFP expression vector. The partly deleted homeodomain (HD) regions of Obox4 were also fused to the GFP expression vector. The recombinant vectors were transfected into HEK-293T cells plated onto coated glass coverslips. The transfected cells were stained with 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindol and photographed using a fluorescence microscope. RESULTS: Mutants containing the HD region as well as full-length Obox4 were clearly localized to the nucleus. In contrast, the other mutants of either the N-terminal or C-terminal region without HD had impaired nuclear localization. We also found that the N-terminal and C-terminal of the Obox HD contributed to nuclear localization and the entire HD was necessary for nuclear localization of Obox4. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the present study, we demonstrated that the intact HD region of Obox4 is responsible for the nuclear localization of Obox4 protein in cells.

3.Myiasis in a submandibular metastatic squamous cell carcinoma: a case report.

We report a case of myiasis on the left submandibular area after radiation therapy for squamous cell carcinoma. A 77-year-old man visited our hospital, 7 weeks after complicating a course of radiation therapy, had a 7cm diameter necrotic ulcer on the left submandible. The margin of the lesion were undermined by numerous interlinking passages containing 20 maggots. The maggots were removed by simple extraction and were identified as Calliphoridae Lucilia. The probable origin of the myiasis in this case was attributed to poor environmental condition and general weakness of the patient. Oppotunistic cutaneous myiasis can be prevented by protecting open wounds from flies, wound should not be left without a covering capable of excluding flies, especially in the summer month.

4.Pediatric Hip Disease (II): Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip – Treatment of Residual Dysplasia

Residual dysplasia is common in spite of early treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip and often requires a harness or femoral/ acetabular surgery. Operative treatment is roughly divided into two categories: reconstructive and salvage; but the reconstruction such as re-directional osteotomy of the acetabulum should always be considered first. Operative treatment consists of osteotomy on femur or acetabulum, or both. Before the surgery, thorough evaluation of the patient is necessary to select appropriate operation. Avascular necrosis is one of the most catastrophic complications, which is often seen in delayed diagnosis or surgically treated patients.
5.Progression of Peyronie's Disease during Tamoxifen Treatment.

PURPOSE: Medical treatment of Peyronie's disease with tamoxifen has been initially proposed as acting upon the early phase of the disease. As recent reports show no significant benefit of tamoxifen, we review the long term results of tamoxifen treatment of Peyronie's disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Time to progression during tamoxifen treatment of patients showing acute disease and chronic disease was compared. The acute phase was identified by pain during erection. Progression was defined as enlargement of plaque size or appearance of calcification. RESULTS: The average treatment duration was 15.9+/-13.8 months (range: 3 to 48 months). The median time to progression was 7 months for acute patients and 20 months for chronic patients. Eighty percent of patients in the acute phase showed relief of pain; however, overall progression was 72.1% (78.0% for acute, 66.7% for chronic). Patient history, comorbidities, serum testosterone or initial plaque characteristics, and severity of curvature were not predictive of disease progression. CONCLUSIONS: Tamoxifen showed no significant benefit in slowing the progression of Peyronie's disease in the acute phase over the chronic phase. Peyronie's disease continued to progress, though at a dampened rate for patient's in the chronic phase.

6.A Study Using Diffusion-Weighted MR Image in the Experimental Models with Diffusion Difference.

PURPOSE: To see the stability and error in the diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technique in the experimental models and to observe the signal intensities in the early cerebral lesions of the animal models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Diffusion coefficients of acetone and distilled water were measured by diffusion-weighted MR image and were compared with actual values. Differentiation of diffusion from perfusion were done at the resin flow phantom. The signal intensities caused by early parenchymal changes were measured in normal, hypovolemic, and embolic, and dead animal models by using diffusion-weighted image and compared with pathoIogic finding and vital staining. RESULTS: Diffusion coefficients of acetone and distilled water were 4.48 x 10-3 and 2.72 x 10-3 which were very close to the actual values. Diffusion-weighted MR image obtained at flow phantom was not affected by flow (perfusion) at the 100-400 of b-factor range. Animal study done at that b-factor range revealed a significant signal difference between the left and right sides only at the embolic model induced by polyvinyl alchol particles (p<0.05). These changes were not detected in microscopic finding but could be identified in vital staining. CONCLUSION: Diffusion-weighted MR image can be used to detect early parenchymal change when the appropriate b-factor range was applied.

Paraneoplastic neutrophilia caused by a squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix has been seen rarely. We report a case of relapsed squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix with severe neutrophilia, rapid tumor growth and aggressive clinical course, possibly due to autocrine stimulation of cell growth by G-CSF and IL-6 without other possible causes of neutrophilia.

8.Effect of Potassium Aminobezoate in Oral Therapy for Peyronie's Disease: Preliminary Study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect and improvement of potassium aminobenzoate (500 mg Peyron capsule) in oral therapy for Peyronie's disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From February 2011 to September 2011, 31 patients with Peyronie's disease received potassium aminobezoate (500 mg Peyron capsules) and were divided into two groups. Group 1 (N=10) received potassium aminobezoate (500 mg Peyron capsule) 3 g four times daily without previous treatment of Peyronie's disease, while group 2 (N=21) received the same drug with previous treatment of Peyronie's disease (10 mg Tamoxifen +300 mg L-carnitine two times daily). Outcomes were assessed by subjective symptom change, pain relief, resolutions of the plaque, and curvature. RESULTS: After 3 months, there were no significant improvements in clinical outcomes of either group and among all the patients, 23 stopped taking potassium aminobezoate (23/31, 74%). The reasons for ceasing the therapy were gastrointestinal trouble (8/23, 35%), too many doses to take (7/23, 30%), ineffectiveness (6/23, 26%), and high price (2/23, 9%). CONCLUSIONS: Athough the etiology of Peyronie's disease has not been elucidated, potassium aminobenzoate in therapy of Peyronie's disease has been used. The use of this medication has the limitations of gastrointestinal trouble, ineffectiveness, too many doses, and high price. Further evaluations of the effect and appropriate dosing of potassium aminobenzoate are needed.

10.Statistical evaluation of ameloblastoma on the relationship between radiological and clinical characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Very high aggressiveness and recurrence are important clinical characteristics of ameloblastoma compared to the other benign tumors. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan is important. This study examined the association of the clinical findings and recurrence based on the radiological findings of ameloblastoma. In recurrent cases, these results are expected to help in the diagnosis and treatment of ameloblastoma to examine the relevance with the clinical characteristics and radiological features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For a clinical (gender, age) and radiological (location, internal pattern, size, perforation, border pattern, impacted tooth, root resorption) evaluation , this study examined 156 cases of 147 patients diagnosed with ameloblastoma, who had been treated and in most cases regularly checked at the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Kyungpook National University Hospital, between January 1993 and December 2009. For a recurrent rate evaluation, a more than 3 years follow-up period is needed. Accordingly, 116 patients diagnosed with ameloblastoma between January 1994 and December 2007 were investigated. RESULTS: The recurrence rate in all cases was 6.1% but was 7.8% in cases with follow-up periods more than 3 years. The male-to-female ratio was 3:2, showing a slight male predilection. Ameloblastoma had a peak occurrence in the second decade of life followed by the fourth decade of life. The mandibular angle area is the most frequent site of ameloblastoma (50.8%) in the jaws. Six cases of unilocular (7.8%) and 3 cases of multilocular (7.7%) ameloblastomas recurred. Seven cases of smooth (10%) and 2 cases of irregular (4.3%) ameloblastomas recurred. No cases of ameloblastomas without perforation of the cortical bone (0%) and 9 cases with a perforation of cortical bone (11.1%) recurred. Four cases of the ameloblastomas with impacted teeth (11.4%) and 5 cases of ameloblastomas without impacted tooth (6.2%) recurred. Seven cases of ameloblastomas with root resorption (10.9%) and 2 cases of ameloblastomas without root resorption (3.8%) recurred. CONCLUSION: A multiple smooth margin, unilocular ameloblastoma with an impacted tooth, root resorption tends to recur more easily. Therefore, they need to be treated more carefully and require a a longer follow-up.
