Objective To compare the whole-body equivalent doses from volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and static intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for patients with cervical cancer. Methods Nine patients with cervical cancer admitted to our hospital in 2014 were included in this study. Both VMAT and IMRT were planned for each patient. Each patient's personal dose equivalent (Hp (10)) was measured using thermoluminescent dosimeters placed at the xiphoid process and glabella during IMRT and VMAT.The whole-body equivalent doses were estimated based on the results measured at the xiphoid process and compared between the VMAT and IMRT techniques. The paired t test was used for difference analysis. Results The Hp (10) values measured at the xiphoid process and glabella of every patient were lower for VMAT than for IMRT.At a prescribed dose of 50 Gy,if the mean Hp (10) values measured at the xiphoid process were considered to represent the whole-body equivalent doses, the whole-body equivalent doses for VMAT and IMRT were 364 mSv and 538 mSv,respectively. Conclusions VMAT results in a lower whole-body equivalent dose to patients compared with IMRT.The decreased whole-body equivalent dose delivered by VMAT may reduce the likelihood of a radiation-induced secondary malignancy.

AIM: To investigate whether efficient production of neuron-like cells from embryonic stem cells(ESCs) can be indued by astrocyte-conditioned medium(ACM) in vitro.METHODS: Based on the 4-/4+ protocol established by Bain, two groups were studied: ATRA group,ATRA with ACM group.ESCs were induced into neuron-like cells by means of three-step differentiation in vitro. The totipotency of ESCs was identified by the observation of cells' morphology and the formations of teratoma in immunocomprised mice. The cell differentiation was evaluated continuously by detection of the cellular specific markers of neural stem cell, neurons and astrocytes such as nestin,NF-200,NSE and GFAP using immuno-histochemistry assay.RESULTS:(1) The ESC-D3 cells kept the ability of differentiation into cellular derivations of all three primary germ layers after continuous passage culture.(2) The ratio of NF-200 and NSE positive cells in the cells induced by ATRA with ACM was higher than that in the cells induced by ATRA only.(3) Finally, the positive rate of the neuron-like cells was up to 73.5% in the group induced by ATRA with ACM.CONCLUSION: The ESCs are induced into neuron-like cells with high purity and efficiency by ATRA with ACM.

Objective To investigate the value of combined detection of multi-tumor markers in the diagnosis of primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to establish the discriminant equation. Methods Using a protein chip, 12 tumor markers in the serum from 98 patients with HCC and 67 patients with benign liver diseasewho had been admitted to Daping Hospital from November 2003 to April 2006, and 46 healthy individuals during he same period were analyzed. A discriminant equation was established to discriminate primary HCC from benign liver diseases. All the data were processed by variance analysis and chi-square test. Results The positive rates of the tumor markers were 89% (87/98) in patients with primary HCC, 19% (13/67) in patients with benign liver disease and 4% (2/46) in healthy individuals. There was statistical difference in the serum level of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), eareinoembryonic antigen (CEA), ferritin (FER), CA19-9 and CA125 among the 3 groups (F =59.530, 40.472, 31.708, 75. 897, 153.066, P <0.05). Combined detection of AFP, CEA, FER, CA19-9 and CA125 improved the diagnostic accordance rate to 89%, which was significandy higher than the diagnostic accordance rate (64%) when only AFP was detected (X2 = 16.362, P <0.05). The accuracy of the discriminant equation was 90%. Conclusions Combined detection of multi-tumor markers is superior to AFP detection. Combined detection of multi-tumor markers can be used in screening of the HCC patients in HCC high risk population and in the early diagnosis of primary HCC.

Objective Gambogic acid ( GA) can suppress the growth of multiple tumor cells , including gastric carcinoma , hepatoma , hematologic neoplasms and breast carcinoma , but there have been few reports about its effect on urologic neoplasms .This study was to investigate the possible mechanisms of GA inducing bladder cancer cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest . Methods We cultured human bladder cancer BIU8-7 cell lines in vitor and treated the cells in the logarithmic growth phase with isotonic saline solu-tion (negative control)or GA at the concentrations of 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0μmol/L, respectively. We determined the expression of the Caspase-3 protein in the tumor tissue using the immunohistochemical S-P method and detected GA-induced apoptosis of the bladder cancer cells and cell cycle changes by flow cytometry . Results The expressions of the Caspase-3 protein were 4.28 ±1.86, 5.03 ± 0.78, and 6.47 ±1.31 in the 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0μmol/L GA groups, respectively, significantly higher than 2.13 ±1.27 in the nega-tive control (P<0.05).Flow cytometry showed a gradual decrease of the cells in the G 0/G1 phase and a gradual increase in the G2/M phase , but no obvious change in the S phase . Conclusion Gambogic acid can promote the apoptosis , arrest the cell cycle , and in-hibit the proliferation of bladder cancer cells by increasing the expression of the Caspase -3 protein.

Objective To estimate the clinical effect and application value of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting (PTAS) on patients with lower extremity atherosclerotic occlusive disease (LEAOD). Methods Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PAT) and PATS were performed on 127 patients with diabetic lower limb arteriosclerosis. Results Total achievement ratio was 97.64% (124/127). PTAS was failed in 3 patients, clinical symptoms disappeared or improved in 124 patients. The average ankle brachial index (ABI) before and after operation was 0.35 (0.11-0.58) and 0.87 (0.67-1.06), respectively. The difference in ABI before and after operation was significant (P<0.05). During 3-60 months following-up, arteria iliaca remained open in 53 patients, and no recurrence of clinical symptom was found. At 6, 12, 36 and 60 months after operation, the encumbered superficial femoral artery kept smooth bloodstream with a proportion of 97.78%, 91.11%, 84.44%, 75.56% in 45 patients in upper 2/3 segment and 89.66%, 79.31%, 72.41%, 65.52% in 29 patients in infer 1/3 segment, respectively. Conclusion Long-term vessel recanalization can be obtained effectively and haemodynamics index be remarkably improved with PTA and PTAS in LEAOD patients.
