Microbiology 2008;0(10):-
Characters of one Candida intermedia yeast strain which isolated from nature can produce ethanol from xylose-fermenting been systemic studied. In conditions 28?C, 120 r/min, 72 h, it can produce 6.480 g/L ethanol from 7% xylose and 43.70% theoretical production of ethanol from 3% xylose. It can produce up to 21.225 g/L ethanol when incubation time prolong to 156 h from 8% xylose. It also can ferment 13% glucose produce 47.647 g/L ethanol and reach 76.90% of theoretical ethanol production, respectively. Compared to CK, ethanol productivity can be improved 9.91% when add 8% xylose in three times as 3%, 2% and 3%, respectively. Glucose can be first utilized in the mixture sugar medium. When the ratio of xylose vs. glucose is 3:1in mixture sugar, the productivity of ethanol can be improving 25%.

PURPOSETo explore the possible surgical factors related with nonunion in femoral shaft fracture following intramedullary nailing.
METHODSWe retrospectively analyzed totally 425 patients with femoral shaft fracture in level I urban trauma center, including 254 males and 171 females, with an average age of 37.6 (ranging from 21 to 56) years old. The inclusion criteria included: (1) traumatically closed fracture of femoral shaft, with pre- operative films showing non-comminuted fracture, such as transverse fracture, oblique fracture or spiral fracture; (2) closed reduction and fixation with interlocking intramedullary nail at 3-7 days after trauma; (3) complete follow-up data available. The relationship between the following factors (fracture site, reduction degree, direction of nail insertion and nail size) and nonunion was studied.
RESULTSThe incidence of femoral nonunion was 2.8% in patients with closed simple fracture undergoing interlocking intrameduallary nailing, including 11 cases of hypertrophic nonunion. Nonunion was related significantly to distal fracture, unsatisfactory reduction and unreamed nail (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between antegrade nail and retrograde nail (p > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSNonunion in femoral shaft facture following interlocking intramedullary nailing is related to fracture site, fracture reduction and nail diameter. The choice of reamed nails or unreamed nails depends on the fracture site and reduction degree.

To compare the short-and long-term effect of two minimal invasive surgical therapies including keyhole approach endoscopic surgery(KAES)and stereotactic aspiration plus urokinase(SAU)in treating basal ganglia hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage(hICH). The clinical data of 117 hICH patients(63 received KAES and 54 received SAU)were retrospectively analyzed. The operation time, blood loss during surgery, and drainage time were compared between two groups. The residual hematoma volume, hematoma clearance rate(HCR),Glasgow coma scale(GCS)score, and National Institute of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS)score were recorded at baseline and in the ultra-early stage, early stage, and sub-early stage after surgery. The 30-day mortality and serious adverse events were assessed and the 6-month modified Rankin scale(mRS)score was rated. Baseline data showed no significant difference between these two groups.Compared with the SAU group, the KAES group had significantly longer operation time, more intraoperative blood loss, and shorter drainage time(all <0.001).In the ultra-early stage after surgery,HCR was significantly higher in the KAES group(<0.001),whereas in the early and sub-early stage,HCR showed no significant differences(all >0.05).In the ultra-early and early stage, the GCS and NIHSS scores showed no significant differences between two groups(all >0.05),whereas in the sub-early stage, the NIHSS score was better in the SAU group(=0.034).The 30-day mortality and incidences of serious adverse events showed no significant difference(all >0.05).The good recovery(mRS≤3)at 6-months follow-up showed no significant difference between the two groups(=0.413). Both KAES and SAU are safe and effective in treating basal ganglia hICH.In the ultra-early stage after surgery,KAES achieves better residual hematoma volume and HCR,and patients undergoing SAU quickly catch up.The short-and long-term effectiveness of SAU is comparable or even superior to KAES.

Objective To prepare and study the immunogenicity of hepatitis B virus surface anti-gen (HBsAg)-tetanus toxoid (TT) conjugate vaccine. Methods Tr was activated by cyangen bromide and reacted with adipic acid dihydrazide, then HBsAg-TT conjugate was prepared by carbediimide. Conjugate, HBsAg or hepatitis B vaccine was injected subcutaneously into mice. Anti-HBsAg and HBsAg-specific T cell response elicited by these immunogens were assayed. Results New HBsAg-TT conjugate elicited higher levels of anti-HBsAg and HBsAg positive conversion rates after the immunization than did HBsAg alone or hepatitis B vaccine. Conjugate induced mesdy antibodies of the IgG2a subclass, while HBsAg alone or hepa-titis B vaccine mainly elicited anti-HBsAg in the IgG1 subclass. The number of IFN-γand IL-2 secreting T cells induced by conjugate was also significantly higher than that did by HBsAg or hepatitis B vaccine. Con-clusion This study indicated new HBsAg-TT conjugate can induce both stronger humoral and TH1 type of cellular immune response.

Objective To discuss the safety and efficacy of inserting ureterovesical reimplantation by means of laparoscopy associated with six-stitch suture. Methods There was an retrospective analysis on operation videos and clinical data for 16 participants of inserting ureterovesical reimplantation by means of laparoscopy associated with six-stitch suture with the period from March in 2012 to September in 2015. And these were statistically analyzed including the operation time, intraoperative bleeding volume, postoperative drainage volume, removal time of drainage tube, admission time after operation and the incidence of postoperative complications of vesicoureteric reflux and stenosis. Results The operations of 16 participants were completed successfully without converting to open surgery. The operation time was 60 ~ 125 min (Mean time: 85 min); intraoperative bleeding volume was 20 ~ 50 ml (Mean volume: 32 ml); postoperative drainage volume was 60 ~ 400 ml (Mean volume: 106 ml); removal time of drainage tube was 3 ~ 6 d (Mean time: 4.2 d) and admission time after operation was 7 ~ 10 d (Mean time: 8.5 d). There was the follow-up with 6 ~ 18 months (Mean time: 12 months) for participants. No anastomotic stenosis was present. In addition, one participant was suffered from mild vesicoureteric relfux. And there was no aggravation during 18 months. Conclusions The inserting ureterovesical reimplantation by means of laparoscopy associated with six-stitch suture was safe and effective. It was found that the operation time was significantly shortened and the incidence of postoperative complications of vesicoureteric relfux and anastomotic stenosis was not increased. By contrast, the six-stitch suture could reduce the incidence of anastomotic stenosis.

BACKGROUNDOver past two decades, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been widely used and reported to alleviate seizure frequency worldwide, however, so far, only hundreds of patients with pharmaco-resistant epilepsy (PRE) have been treated with VNS in mainland China. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of VNS for Chinese patients with PRE and compare its relationship with age cohort and gender.
METHODSWe retrospectively assessed the clinical outcome of 94 patients with PRE, who were treated with VNS at Beijing Fengtai Hospital and Beijing Tiantan Hospital between November 2008 and April 2014 from our database of 106 consecutive patients. The clinical data analysis was retrospectively examined.
RESULTSSeizure frequency significantly decreased with VNS therapy after intermittent stimulation of the vagus nerve. At last follow-up, we found McHugh classifications of Class I in 33 patients (35.1%), Class II in 27 patients (28.7%), Class III in 20 patients (21.3%), Class IV in 3 patients (3.2%), and Class V in 11 patients (11.7%). Notably, 8 (8.5%) patients were seizure-free while ≥50% seizure frequency reduction occurred in as many as 60 patients (63.8%). Furthermore, with regard to the modified Engel classification, 12 patients (12.8%) were classified as Class I, 11 patients (11.7%) were classified as Class II, 37 patients (39.4%) were classified as Class III, 34 patients (36.2%) were classified as Class IV. We also found that the factors of gender or age are not associated with clinical outcome.
CONCLUSIONSThis comparative study confirmed that VNS is a safe, well-tolerated, and effective treatment for Chinese PRE patients. VNS reduced the seizure frequency regardless of age or gender of studied patients.
