6.Primary Cutaneous Meningioma arising from the Scalp: A case report.

Primary cutaneous meningiomas are extremely rare tumors found in the cutis or subcutis, and generally have a benign course. The tend to be located on the scalp, face, neck. or paravertebral area. The primary cutaneous meningioma bears similarities to developmental defects and probably originates from arachnoid cell rests in the skin, although diverse groups of cutaneous meningiomas seem to arise from several different sources. A case of primary cutaneous meningioma occuring in the scalp of left parietal area of a 27-year-old female is presented. Clinically the lesion appeared as indolent, slow growing cutaneous mass and has no connection with underlying brain tissue, as determined by examination of the roentgenographs. The definite diagnosis was made after pathological examination. Microscopically the tumor is composed of sheets and nests of meningothelial cells. Immunohistochemical and electron microscopic studies reveal the typical findings of meningioma.

7.Complications in the Treatment of Comminuted Fracture and Nonunion by Ilizarov Procedure

We reviewed the records of thirty-four patients who had been managed with the Ilizarov technique for the comminuted intra- and extra-articular fractures and nonunion of the long bones with or with-out bone defect. The goal of this study is to analysis the clinical complications of the Ilizarov technique, and to find out the methods solving them. 1. This study comprises 34 patients who were treated by Ilizarov technique at the Chonbuk National University Hospital from March, 1992 to June, 1993. 2. Among 34 cases, 22 were comminuted intra- and extra-articular fractures, and 12 were nonunion of the long bones. 3. The complications were divided intd problem, obstacle and complication; problem in 16 cases, obstacle in 11 cases and complication in 6 cases. 4. We conclude that the Ilizarov technique is a useful method in management of the severe commi- nuted fractures and the nonunion of the long bones, but we have to consider the complication sincerely and endeavor to reduce them.

8.Basic Study on the Effect of Korean Ginseng upon Fracture Healing of the Bone

This study was planned by the necessities of basic information about the effects of Korean Ginseng upon fracture healing and biomechanical properties of bone. Three hundred white mice were used for this study, and we could have tested the biomechanical properties in one hundred and nintyfour. The bones of the white mice were evaluated by testing gross stability, radiological appearance, and biomechanical properties. It appears that Korean Ginseng has an excellent effect upon early phase of fracture healing of the bone. The summary of this study are as follows: 1. With near maximal dose, Korean Ginseng showed very excellent effect upon early phase of the fracture healing. 2. There was no apparent effect on remodeling phase of the fracture healing with Korean Ginseng of near maximal dose. 3. Korean Ginseng appeared to have no effect on fracture healing with minimal dose. 4. Upon biomechanical properties of the bone, Korean Ginseng was seemed to be effective with near maximal dose. But, there was no definite evidence for that.

9.Changes of Pulmonary Function after Surgical Correction in Scoliosis

This study was performed by the necessity of objective information upon change of pulmonary function after surgical correction of spinal deformity in scoliotic patients. It is relatively well known that deformity of spinal curvature affects the pulmonary functions, especially lung volume or vital capacity, due to restriction of the thoracic cage. It is carried out the comparative study between preoperative and postoperative pulmonary functions in thirty two cases of thoracic scoliosis, all who were treated with Harrington instrumentation and posterior fusion at Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul, National University Hospital from 1969 to 1983. The age distribution of patients was from 6 years to 21 years and female was more involved two times than male. Following observations were obtained: Following observations were obtained: 1. Pre-and postoperative angle of scoliosis were 77.5° and 39.2° with correction rate of 48.2%. 2. Preoperative vital capacity was 64.2% and postoperative value was 74.8%, 2 years and 2 months after operation in average. 3. Postoperative vital capacity was significantly increased compared to preoperative value in patients with scoliosis (p<0.05). 4. Ther was no definite pattern of obstructive pulmonary disease in patients with scoliotic deformity.

10.Recurrent anterior Dislocation of the Shoulder-Analysis of the Bristow Bristow and the Combined Bakert and Putti: Platt Operation

Numerous operations have been described to treat the recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder, but no one procedure was accepted as the choice of operation. We perforemed 6 Bristow procedures and 5 combined Bankart and Putti-Platt procedures and examined six shoulders by arthroscope from sep. 1989 to Sep. 1992, and we analysed the pathologic feature and the results of them. The average follow-up period was 2.2 years. 1. There were 8 males and 3 females and their average age was 33.7 years. The mean age in initial dislocation was 28 years. 2. The number of recurrent dislocation before operation was 17.9 times and the average duration of the disease was 5.7 years. 3. The pathologic lesions observed in intraoperative field were Hill-Sachs lesion (72.7%), Bankart lesion (90.9%), and the erosion of the glenoid rim (54.5%). On arthroscopic examination of 6 cases, Hill-Sachs lesion was found in 4 cases, Bankart lesion was seen in all of 6 cases, and the erosion of the glenoid rim was observed in 4 cases. 4. The average range of the limitation of external rotation was 17.3 and its significant difference was not observed between 2 operative groups. 5. By Rowes rating sheet, 4 cases of 5 combined Bankart and Putti-Platt operations were excellent and 1 case was good. 6. In conclusion, combined Bankart and Putt-Platt operation was considered as a good surgical procedure in the treatment of recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder.
