Geographic tongue, also called benign migratory glossitis, is a common and superficial benign inflammatory disorder that affects the tongue epithelium. The majority of geographic tongue lesions typically manifest as irregular central erythematous patches. These lesions, which are caused by the loss of filiform papillae, are defined by an elevated whitish band-like border that can change location, size, and pattern over a period of time. Histological observations of the oral mucosa affected by geographic tongue revealed nonspecific inflammation. Some reports described cases of migratory stomatitis, wherein lesions simultaneously manifested on the extra lingual oral mucosa. This condition is also called ectopic geographic tongue, which is clinically and histologically similar to the type normally confined to the tongue. In most cases, patients are asymptomatic and do not require treatment. The condition may spontaneously exhibit periods of remission and exacerbation with good prognosis. The specific etiology of geographic tongue remains unknown. Geographic tongue is age-related and is prevalent among young individuals. Various etiological factors that have been suggested in literature include immunological factors, genetic factors, atopic or allergic tendency, emotional stress, tobacco consumption, hormonal disturbances, and zinc deficiency. Geographic tongue may coexist with other disorders, such as fissured tongue, psoriasis, diabetes mellitus, gastroin- testinal diseases, burning mouth syndrome, and Down syndrome. Experts currently disagree on whether geographic tongue is an oral manifestation of psoriasis. Moreover, some scholars suggest that geographic tongue is a prestage of fissured tongue. The objective of this review is to summarize current research on risk factors of geographic tongue.

2.Human biochemical genetics: an insight into inborn errors of metabolism.
Journal of Zhejiang University. Science. B 2006;7(2):165-166
Inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) include a broad spectrum of defects of various gene products that affect intermediary metabolism in the body. Studying the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of those inherited disorder, systematically summarizing the disease phenotype and natural history, providing diagnostic rationale and methodology and treatment strategy comprise the context of human biochemical genetics. This session focused on: (1) manifestations of representative metabolic disorders; (2) the emergent technology and application of newborn screening of metabolic disorders using tandem mass spectrometry; (3) principles of managing IEM; (4) the concept of carrier testing aiming prevention. Early detection of patients with IEM allows early intervention and more options for treatment.

ObjectiveTo investigate the epidemic situation of brucellosis in Datong city, and to provide scientific evidence for making appropriate prevention and control measures. MethodsSurveillance data of human brucellosis in 7 countris and 4 districts in Datong city between 2006 and 2009 were collected, throng the national network straight quote system in an infectious diseases. Excel database was established and all data were statistically analyzed. Incidence of brucellosis in local population was analyzed. The regional distribution, time distribution, occupation, age and sex distribution were analyzed. Epidemic characteristics and trend of brucellosis in Datong city were summarized. Results A total of 5195 cases of brucellosis patients in Datong were found between 2006 and 2009, the average incidence rate was 57.51/10 million. All counties had the disease, and the onset of the disease mainly in the spring and summer. Most cases were young males. Farmer case was 81.67%(4243/5195) of the total patients. ConclusionsFrom 2006 to 2009, epidemic characteristic of Datong human brucellosis ishigh-low-high(incidence). We suggests the Department concerned to strengthen the prevention and control of the disease in some counties, focusing on spreading of disease prevention and control knowledge among farmers and increase their self-protection awareness.
5.Effects of Analgesics and Sedatives before Silicone-tube Intubation on Patients’ Pain with Nasolacrimal Duct Stenosis
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2023;64(10):879-885
Purpose:
We investigated the effect of preoperative administration of analgesics and sedatives on pain levels during silicone tube intubation conducted under local anesthesia in patients with acquired nasolacrimal duct stenosis.
Methods:
We retrospectively reviewed the medical records from 121 patients at the ophthalmology department of our hospital from July 2016 to May 2022. In total, 71 patients were administered acetaminophen and diazepam orally, while the remaining 50 were not. Postoperative pain (measured using the visual analogue scale [VAS] score [0 = no pain, 10 = severe pain] immediately after operation), operative duration, and improvement in epiphora symptoms were compared between the two groups.
Results:
The premedication group had significantly lower VAS scores than the non-premedication group (5.23 ± 2.75 vs. 6.34 ± 2.33, p = 0.02). It also had a notably shorter (p < 0.01) operation duration and higher subjective improvement rate of epiphora symptoms. However, premedication did not influence the tube retention period post-surgery (p = 0.86).
Conclusions
The administration of analgesics and sedatives prior to silicone tube intubation effectively mitigates operative pain and reduces operation duration. Furthermore, it may help improve postoperative epiphora symptoms.

Objective To explore the biomechanical function of PCL and its different bundles and examine the biomechanical impact of posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) integrity on the medial femoral condyle. Methods Twelve fresh human cadaveric knee specimens were subjected to different axial load (0-800 N) at 0°, 30°,60°, and 90°of knee flexion. Four surgical treatments were carried out for biomechanical testing: PCL intact, anterolateral bundle (ALB) rupture, posteromedial bundle (PMB) rupture and PCL rupure. During the test, strains of middle part of the medial femoral condyle were calculated. Results At O°knee flexion, increasing strain of the medial femoral condyle was detected in PMB rupture and PCL rupture under all loading conditions. No significant difference of strain of the medial femoral condyle was noted between PCL intact and ALB rupture under any loading conditions. Compared to PMB rupture, PCL rupture had not higher strain of the medial femoral condyle under all loading conditions. At 30°, 60° and 90° knee flexion, increasing strain of the medial femoral condyle was noted in ALB rupture under higher loading conditions and PCL rupture under all loading conditions. ALB rupture under lower loading conditions and PMB rupture under all loading conditions did not significantly increased strain of the medial femoral condyle. PCL rupture had higher strain of the medial femoral condyle than ALB rupture under most of loading conditions. Conclusion The data suggest that PMB is the major stabilizing bundle of PCL in full extension, ALB is the major stabilizing bundle of PCL in knee flexion, and both bundles function through the ROM in a codominant fashion. Partial and complete ruptures of PCL may have hazardous biomechanical impacts on the medial femoral condyle during normal movement.

Korean Journal of Schizophrenia Research 2016;19(1):32-37
Intensive case management provided at the critical period following the onset of schizophrenia is crucial for early social and vocational recovery. We report the young schizophrenia patient who had been treated for 2 years but frequently relapsed and attempted suicide. After receiving cognitive behavioral case management from community mental health center, she has functionally recovered without recurrence for 4 years. Collaboration between psychiatrists of hospital and case manager of community mental health center was very important factor that contributed to her functional recovery. Cognitive behavioral case management promoting coping skills and reducing perceived stress was effective on successful social adaptation even during the stressful situations. In conclusion, psychosocial management including cognitive behavioral case management at the early stage of schizophrenia is crucial to prevent the relapse and to recover patients' function.

Neonatal Medicine 2014;21(1):74-78
Vertebral, anal, cardiac, tracheo-esophageal, renal, and limb(VACTERL) association is defined as the presence of at least three of the above-mentioned six manifestations. An estimated incidence of the VACTERL association is 1 in 20,000 to 35,000 live births although the diagnostic criteria vary. The VACTERL association is highly heterogeneous in clinical presentation. It may represent a spectrum from the less severely affected to the more severely affected. Diagnosis is difficult because of the number of disorders that have overlapping features with trisomy 13 syndrome, trisomy 18 syndrome, trisomy 21 syndrome, Feingold syndrome, and so on. The incidence of trisomy 18 syndrome, a type of a chromosomal disorder, is estimated to be 1 in 6,000-8,000 live births. It includes characteristic craniofacial anomalies, clenched hand with overlapping of index finger over third, fifth finger over fourth, underdeveloped thumbs, short sternum, cardiac anomalies such as ventricular septal defect, and renal anomalies such as horseshoe kidney. Approximately over 50% of infants with trisomy 18 syndrome live less than one week. In 1983, Khoury et al. reported VACTERL association combined with trisomy 18 syndrome. Here, we report a case of a low birth weight female infant with VACTERL association, whose second diagnosis is Edward syndrome, and that she also has another combined anomaly, meningomyelocele. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of VACTERL association with meningomyelocele combined with trisomy 18 syndrome in Korea.
