Objective To identify the Banna viruses isolated in northwestern part of Yunnan prov-ince in order to make the difference clear between the isolates and other Banna viruses isolated in other parts of Yunnan. Methods Three isolates of Banna vires isolated in 2005 and 2006 were identified by morpholo-gy, RNA-PAGE profile and molecular biologic method. Nueleotide and amino acid sequences of segment 12 of the 3 isolates were sequenced and analyzed. Results Three Banna viruses were isolated from mosquitoes collected in northwestern part of Yunnan during 2005 and 2006. Electron microscopy study showed that they are spherical with a diameter of 70 nm, no envelope but two layers of eapsid. It was found that the genome of the 3 isolates composes of 12 segments presenting band profile of 6-6 in RNA-PAGE. Nueleotide acid se-quence analysis about segment 12 showed that the identity was 99% between the 3 new isolates, 98% and 90% between the 3 isolates and the strains isolated in other parts of Yunnan, China and Indonesia, respec-tively. Phylogenetie analysis based on segment 12 gene showed that 3 new isolates clnstered in the same branch with the viruses isolated in other parts of Yunnan. The same difference of amino acids was found between Banna viruses isolated in China and Indonesia strains in the analysis of segment 12. Conclusion Banna virus strains were firstly isolated from mosquitoes collected in northwestern part of Yunnan province. Nueleotide acid sequence analysis of the 3 new isolates showed higher identity with strains isolated in other parts of Yunnan.

Aim To examine the effect of zacopride,a specific inward rectifier potassium channel(IK1)agonist,on L-thyroxine(T4)-induced ventricular remodeling and the underlying mechanism. Methods SD rats were randomly divided as control,L-thyroxine(L-thy,1 mg·kg-1·d-1,ig,10 d)model,L-thy +zacopride(5,15,50 μg·kg-1,respectively,ip),L-thy+zacopride(15 μg·kg-1)+chloroquine(7.5 μg·kg-1,ip)and L-thy+captopril(100 mg·kg-1·d-1,drinking water)groups.Echocardiography and cardiac hypertrophic indexes were measured to confirm the establishment of the ventricular remodeling model. The changes of IK1 and L-calcium current(ICa-L)were detected by whole cell patch clamp technique. The confocal microscopy and fluorescent indicator Fluo-4 were applied to examine the intracellular Ca2+ concentration([Ca2+]i)of isolated adult rat ventricular myocytes. Results L-thyroxine induced left ventricular hypertrophy with increased ratio of heart weight(HW)to body weight(HW·BW-1),ratio of left ventrical weight(LVW)to body weight(LVW·BW-1),left ventricular dimension in diastole(LVIDd),left ventricular dimension in systole(LVIDs),interventricular septum thickness(IVS)and decreased ejection fraction(EF),fractional shortening(FS)(P<0.01).Patch clamp data suggested IK1 was downregulated, while ICa-L was upregulated(P<0.01).In isolated adult cardiomyocytes,L-thyroxine increased the cell area and [Ca2+]i(P<0.01).Zacopride treatment obviously alleviated cardiac remodeling, improved cardiac function, reversed the changes of IK1 and ICa-L,and significantly attenuated intracellular calcium overload(P<0.01).The optimum dose of zacopride in vivo was 15 μg·kg-1 at which the effect was compared favourably with captopril,a classical anti-remodeling agent.Low-dose IK1 atagonist chloroquine could reverse the effect of zacopride(P<0.01).Conclusion Via activating IK1,zacopride could significantly decrease Ca2+ influx and intracellular calcium overload thereby inhibiting L-thyroxine-induced cardiac ventricular remodeling.

OBJECTIVETo assess the clinical outcome of anterior fusion for unstable lower cervical spine.
METHODSFrom October 2000 to October 2004, anterior fusion were performed for 67 cases with unstable lower cervical spine with corresponding clinical manifestations. There were 38 males and 29 females with an average age of 33 years. Instability of lower cervical spine was radiographically determined by sagittal plane displacement between 2 cervical vertebrae of more than 3.5 mm or relative sagittal plane angulation greater than 11 degrees on maximal lateral flexion and extension films. Anterior interbody fusion methods included bone grafting with plate fixation or cage. JOA rating system was used for spine cord function assessment.
RESULTSAll patients were followed up for an average period of 14 months. Solid fusion was achieved for all operated levels. The majority of the patients got a satisfactory relief of preoperative symptoms. JOA scores for cord function improved from preoperative 10.15 to postoperative 14.95 with statistical difference (P < 0.05). Complications included screws loosing and backout in 2 cases. Revision surgery were performed with uneventful recovery.
CONCLUSIONSatisfactory clinical outcome can be achieved by proper selection of anterior fusion methods for patients with unstable lower cervical spine.

OBJECTIVETo study the significance of P504s in differential diagnosis between solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas (SPTP) and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNET).
METHODSForty-three patients with SPTP and 41 patients with PanNET encountered during the period from 2007 to 2014 were recruited. Immunohistochemical study for vimentin, CD10, chromogranin A, synaptophysin, beta-catenin, CD99 and P504s in SPTP and PanNET was performed. The diagnostic value of P504s in differentiating SPTP from PanNET was analyzed.
RESULTSImmunohistochemical study showed that vimentin, CD10, chromogranin A, synaptophysin and CD99 were expressed both in SPTP and PanNET. All cases of SPTP showed granular cytoplasmic expression of P504s, whereas those of PanNET were negative.
CONCLUSIONP504s is a sensitive and useful marker for SPTP and can be used in the distinction between SPTP and PanNET.

OBJECTIVETo compare the effect of autograft, cage and autograft plus internal fixation with plate on maintenance of disc height and recovery of spinal cord function.
METHODSFrom March 1998 to June 2004, 117 cervical spondylotic patients who received anterior fusion surgery were reviewed. There were 65 males and 52 females with an average age of 57 years (range from 31 to 72 years). One level was involved in 91 patients, and two levels in 26. Fusion methods included autogenous tri-cortical iliac bone grafting alone in 31 patients, cage with autograft bone in 38 and autogenous tri-cortical iliac bone grafting combined with self-locking plate in 49. The measured fusion length was determined as the distance from the midpoint between the anterior and posterior aspects of the superior endplate of the top level of the fusion to the midpoint of the inferior endplate of the bottom level of the bottom level of the fusion. JOA rating criteria was used for cord function evaluation. One-way variation analysis was used to compare the disc height loss and cord function among the 3 groups.
RESULTSAll patients were followed-up for an average period of 23 months (range, 13 to 59 months). At final follow- up, disc height loss averaged 1.94 mm in autogenous tri-cortical iliac bone grafting group, greater than that in the other two groups (1.48 mm in cage group and 1.25 mm in instrumented group) with statistical significance. Recovery of spinal cord function was satisfactory in all groups at one year postoperatively with no statistical difference. Three implants failure occurred in self-locking plate group and was salvaged with uneventful recovery.
CONCLUSIONSIn anterior cervical fusion surgery, maintenance of disc height could be achieved by proper application of cage or internal fixation with plate.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the differences in dielectric properties (relative permittivity and conductivity) between the mucosal surface and serosal surface of malignant colorectal tissues, adjacent tissues at 1 cm and 3 cm from the tumor focus and normal colorectal tissues.
METHODSThe dielectric properties of the mucosal and serosal surface of malignant colorectal tissues, adjacent tissues (1 cm and 3 cm) and normal colorectal tissues from 39 patients with colorectal cancer were measured with an open-ended coaxial probe within the frequency range of 50 MHz-3 GHz, and the corresponding dielectric properties were analyzed respectively; statistical tests of the data were used to analyze the dielectric properties at 6 specific frequency points.
RESULTSThe dielectric properties were significantly higher in the malignant mucosa surface than in the adjacent tissues and normal colorectal tissues at the 6 specific frequency points (P<0.01). The dielectric properties decreased progressively in adjacent tissues at 1 cm and 3 cm and normal mucosa surface. The mucosal and serosal surface of malignant tissues showed significant differences in dielectric properties at 64 MHz, 128 MHz, 298 MHz, 433 MHz, and 915 MHz (P<0.01) but not at 2450 MHz (P>0.01), but such differences were not observed in normal tissues (P>0.01).
CONCLUSIONThe dielectric properties of the mucosal surface of the mucosal decrease in the order of malignant colorectal tissue, adjacent tissues at 1 cm and 3 cm from the tumor foci and normal colorectal tissues. The dielectric properties are higher in the mucosal surface than in the serosal surface in the malignant tissue, but comparable in normal colorectal tissues.

OBJECTIVETo determine the diagnostic value of pulmonary function testing in Chinese patients with known pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) without history of lung/heart valve diseases.
METHODSPulmonary function testing was performed in 41 PAH patients diagnosed by right heart catheterization and in 17 healthy controls.
RESULTSNormal pulmonary function testing results were found in 5 PAH patients (12.2%). Total lung capacity, vital capacity and FEV1 were significantly decreased in PAH patients [(80.27 +/- 11.46)% vs. (94.24 +/- 6.82)%; (79.09 +/- 14.89)% vs. (97.35 +/- 9.51)%; (75.40 +/- 16.58)% vs. (95.12 +/- 12.01)%, respectively, all P < 0.001], the ratio of residual volume/total lung capacity was significantly increased [(117.67 +/- 25.73)% vs. (93.39 +/- 10.87)%, P < 0.001]; FEV1/FVC and maximal expiratory flow of 25% to 75% tended to be lower (-6.0% and -19.4%, P = 0.21 and 0.09) while DLCO and DLCO/VA were significantly decreased by 36.6% and 29.8% (P < 0.001) compared with healthy controls.
CONCLUSIONSIncreased peripheral airway obstruction and normal lung resistance were found in these PAH patients. Normal pulmonary function testing results could not rule out the diagnosis of PAH.
