BACKGROUND: Modified banxia houpu decoction (MBHD) is one of thefamous methods and has been used by Zhang Zhong-jin to treat emotionaldiseases in Han dynasty, and it has been used till now. It can be used totreat depression, anxiety, phychoneurosis and so on.OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effect of MBHD on treatingheroin abusers with protracted abstinence syndrome and compare the effectwith brown sugar water.DESIGN: Randomized grouping and placebo randomized controlled study.SETTING: School of Medicine, Hubei Institute for Nationalities and theAbstinence Institute of Public Security Bureau of Enshi AutonomousPrepecture.PARTICIPANTS: Totally 187 cases were the abusers of heroin who hadbeen forced to abstinence in the Abstinence Institute of Public SecurityBureau of Enshi Autonomous Prepecture from August 2000 to September2002. There were 101 males and 86 females aged 18-44 years. All pa-tients were known the fact and were randomly divided into control group(n=58), 60-day MBHD group (n=62) and 72-MBHD group (n=67) accordingto double-blind method.METHODS: ① During the abstinence, three groups were treated bylofexidine hydrochloride (LFX) which was produced by the LimitedCompany of Zhengtai Pharmaceuticals Enterprise of Hunan Province (lotnumber: 990619, 10 mg/pill) for 12 days, then they were treated sepa-rated. Give medicine to 60-MBHD group continuously for 60 days (MB-HD: Pinellia Ternate 15 g, Magnolia Bark 30 g, Poria Cocos 20 g, Perilla10 g, Ginger 20 g, Radix Acanthopanacis Senticosi 20 g, Pericarpium CitriReticulate 6 g, Pericarpium Arecae 20 g, Herba Agastachis 10 g. Tradi-tional Chinese medicines were all bought from HuBei Medicine Company;three times a day, one portion for two days), gave the control group red sug-ar water imitate medicine for 60 days (the method was the same as above),72-MBHD group were given the same quantity of MBHD as 60-MBHDgroup when LFX began to detoxifieate, the whole time was 72 days (Thetime before LFX treat 12 days and after 60 days). It took 72 days for thethree groups to be treated by LFX according to single-blind method. ②Heroin protracted abstinence syndrome scale: insomnia, pain syndromes, catarrh syndromes, mental conditions and sexual function. They werescored respectively to 1, 2, 3 according to mild, moderate and severe.③ One year tater collected the urina sanguinis (three times a week con-tinuously) regarded the positive as re-abusers. ④ Measurement andenumeration data were compared with t test and x2 test respectively.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① Scores of protracted abstinencesyndrome; ② Comparisons of drug re-abusing rate within one year.RESULTS: Totally 187 heroin-dependence patients entered the finalanalysis. ① Scores of protracted abstinence syndrome were lower in 60-day MBHD group and 72-day MBHD group than those in control group(P < 0.01). Scores of pain and catarrh symptoms in 72-day MBHD group were similar to those in 60-day MBHD group (P > 0.05), but scores of insomnia, mental conditions and sexual function were lower than those in 60-day MBHD group (P < 0.01). ② Drug re-abusing rate within one year was lower in 72-day MBHD group than that in control group and 60-day MBHD group [73% (49/67), 95% (55/58), 82% (51/62),P < 0.05],but rate in 60-day MBHD group was similar to that in control group (P > 0.05).CONCLUSION: MBHD can improve the protracted abstinence symptoms of heroin abusers after detoxification. In spite of the complexity of various factors, to effectively control the early stage abstinence symptoms and median stage protracted abstinence symptoms is one of the effective measures to prevent drug re-abusing.

Objective To design a system of conductivity tomography using focused magnetic fields for data acquisition. Method A frequency modulation detection circuit with array of sources was employed to implement multi-frequency measurement. In the circuit, a specially designed coil with good focusing property was used to improve spatial resolution of the image. Acquired data of frequency changes from the detector was stored in the memory operated by a ping-pang pattern, then the data was transmitted into computer by serial communication interface whose transmitting rate reached 115. 2 KHz. Result Frequency stability of the signal source in the system reached 0. 2%; the total harmonic distortion of the signal was less than -43 dB; the signal noise ratio of the source was from 58 dB to 62 dB. The storage capacity of memory was 131 072-word by 16- bit. The system has good frequency resolution, and is easy to be analyzed and processed by the software after data acquisition. The conductivity of the computed results agreed with that in the given model. Conclusion The system is effective to detect and reconstruct the conductivity of stratified biological tissue for its high sensitivity.

ObjectiveTo explore the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of the Barth syndrome (BTHS).MethodsClinical data were collected and analyzed from 3 patients with conifrmed genetic diagnosis of BTHS from June 2013 to October 2014.ResultsAll of the 3 patients were males and two of them were twins. The main clinical manifes-tations of the 3 patients were cardiomyopathy and heart failure, accompanied by different degrees of trabeculations of the left ventricle. Two of them were diagnosed of left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC). All of the 3 patients presented with motor retardation, muscle weakness, growth delay and signiifcantly increased urinary excretion of 3-methylglutaconic acid (3-MGC). One patient was found to have neutropenia. All 3 patients hadTAZ gene mutations which included a novel missense mutation (c.527A>G, p.H176R) detected in the twins and a known nonsense mutation (c.367C>T, p.R123X) identiifed in the other patient. All of the mutations were inherited from their mothers. During the follow-up, the twins died at 7 months old and 7.5 months old respectively. The other patient was still alive.ConclusionBTHS is one of the causes of cardiomyopathy in children. In the male patients who presented with muscle weakness, neutropenia, and increased urinary excretion of 3-MGC, especially in those com-bined with LVNC, BTHS should be screened.

Objective: Numerous studies have shown that bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells
(MSCs) enhance neurological recovery after cerebral ischemia. However, the mechanisms are still
not clear. The present study aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of MSCs on global cerebral
ischemia induced by cardiac arrest (CA) and the underlying mechanisms. Methods: Rats subjected to
asphyxial CA were injected intravenously with MSCs (5×106
) at 2 hours after resuscitation. Whole
brain histopathologic damage scores (HDS) were assessed by histopathology at 3 and 7 days after
resuscitation. The distribution of donor MSCs in the brain was evaluated. The expression of tumor
necrosis factor-α-induced protein 6 (TSG-6) and pro-inflammatory cytokines in cerebral cortex was
assayed. After intravenous infusion of TSG-6 siRNA-MSCs, HDS and pro-inflammatory cytokines
were reevaluated at 7 days after resuscitation. Results: Intravenously administered MSCs significantly
reduced whole brain HDS after global cerebral ischemia. Immunofluorescence microscopy revealed
that donor MSCs were primarily found in cerebral cortex and expressed TSG-6. MSCs treatment
significantly increased the expression of TSG-6 and reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory
cytokines in cerebral cortex. In addition, intravenous infusion of TSG-6 siRNA-MSCs failed to
attenuate brain inflammation. Conclusion: Systemically administered MSCs reduced inflammatory
damage to brain in rats with global cerebral ischemia via secretion of TSG-6.
