Education in general competencies for residents is urgently needed in Korea. The medically advanced countries worldwide already have established training in the general competencies that are demanded of all physicians regardless of speciality. They also evaluate the implementation of the education, and the results of the evaluation are taken into consideration for becoming certified in a board of medical speciality in Korea, however, the education in and evaluation of the general competencies during resident training course are not managed systematically. Thus, identifying the general competencies appropriate to the Korean context is a high priority. Accordingly, the development and implementation of an educational program fostering the general competencies is needed, followed by adequate evaluation. Lastly, in order to smoothly implement all the suggestions mentioned above, it will be necessary to organize new teams or structures that encompass the whole medical community.

The purpose of this study was to compare the task elements categorized into required and additional man power's implemental between present and future-oriented duties of school nutrition teachers. The survey consisted of five duties, 27 tasks, 93 task elements, and 270 work details in the task elements of school nutrition teachers. A pilot-test was first conducted on nutrition teachers to confirm the survey contents, and then a main survey was performed on 240 school nutrition teachers, using a self-administrated online method, from July 16 to September 5, 2016. To compare present and future-oriented tasks, frequency analyses were conducted. Work details in the task elements were categorized into ‘required’ and ‘additional man power's implemental’, depending on school nutrition teachers' responses, based on a 50% cut-off percentage. The results showed that 13 work details among 60 work details (21.7%) in the ‘Duty C. Safety and hygiene management of school foodservice’, and 15 work details out of 106 work details (14.2%) in ‘Duty B. Foodservice management practices’ were identified as additional man power's implemental in future oriented duties. As to ‘Duty A. Nutrition management’, only three work details among 55 work details (5.5%) were identified as additional man power's implemental. On the other hand, all work details in ‘Duty D. Nutrition·diet education and counseling and ‘Duty E. Reinforce professionalism’ were identified as “required” as school nutrition teachers' duties. These findings imply that school nutrition teachers perceive nutrition management and education as their primary duties to the fulfill school foodservice' mission of promoting students' health and fostering students' dietary behaviors. The study offers practical and governmental implications, which can encourage school nutrition teachers to perform their primary duties.

As interest in sports rapidly grows in Korea, fostering of elite athletes and preservation of the athletic ability no longer became the task of advanced countries only. In that aspect, health of athletes and their associated coaches, athlete trainers, team members such as team doctors, and even their families is certainly a matter of concern. Especially when it comes to the inoculation of infectious disease prevention, it needs to be considered as one of the most economical and effective ways to promote health in sports people as well as elite athletes. The purpose of this article is to go over the specific circumstances of the athletes and related literatures on vaccination. In addition, we provide recommendations on the vaccination of athletes regarding the actual situation of sports in Korea.

On April 27, 2018, a historic inter-Korean summit took place. Accordingly, the hostile confrontation that lasted for the past 70 years is over, and many exchanges of human resources and material between the two Koreas are expected. In this situation, I propose that the reasons for and methods of cooperation in healthcare between North and South Korea should be among the first issues to be considered. The reasons are as follows. First, as exchanges increase, the South and the North will rapidly develop into a single health community on the Korean peninsula. Second, cooperation in the field of healthcare can play a leading role in fostering a positive attitude among South and North Koreans toward the improvement of inter-Korean relations and the possibility of future unification. Third, the two Koreas have conditions that make them ideal partners for improving healthcare quality and systems in each country. Some suggestions for specific ways to do this are presented. First, an inter-Korean healthcare agreement should be concluded. Second, specific organizations for inter-Korean cooperation should be established and operated. Third, it is necessary to form and operate a ‘control tower’ for this process in South Korea. It is expected that cooperation between the two Koreas in the field of healthcare will eventually extend to cooperation in all areas.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify factors affecting student adjustment to college among students in health colleges (Nursing, Clinical Pathology, Radiology, Dental Hygienics, Medicine). METHODS: The participants in this study were 261 students in Daejeon city. Data were collected from October 5 to October 14, 2014. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection and data was analyzed using the SPSS/WIN program. RESULTS: Career attitude maturity, calling and work as meaning positively correlated with student adjustment to college. The significant predictors of student adjustment to college were career attitude maturity, calling, always working part-time, major in medicine and average grade for the last semester. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that adjustment to college for students in health colleges is linked to career attitude maturity, and calling. College organization should develop a curriculum fostering a calling which will promote student adjustment to college and graduate health care professionals with desirable attitudes.

The authors interviewed with 21 North Korean defectors who detected from North Korea in 1990-1995 and investigated their adjustment to South Korean society. The main categories of their problems in adjustment were a poor social network, financial difficulties, problems in social competency, problems resulting from their indoctrinated way of thinking, some psychological problems such as excessive self-consciousness and guilty feelings, and some social-structural problems such as poor education system in the government shelter. But, generally speaking, inspite of their problems, they have adjusted to South Korea society rather successfully In the view of short term adjustment, the reasons for their success were thought to be the characteristics and merits of a capitalistic economy ; their compliant personalities resulting from an educational system that emphasized obedience to authority and Kim Il Sung, and the dualism of North Korean lifts. Four points were discussed to assist a successful adjustment in the long term ; Fostering of the ability to make individual choices with internal principles, overcoming a judgemental, moralizing attitude, overcoming of overfull thought centered attitude and rebounding thought-lacking attitude, overcoming the effect of negative collectivism. Three things have been suggested to foster their healthy adjustment ; development and running of resocialization program for the each period of settlement ; building up a network of accessible support organizations who work for the adjustment of defectors ; systemic studies of North Korean people and defecters for the successful adjustment to unified Korean society. It is said that the division of Korean people has been the most tragic thing happen to Korea. But there can be a greater tragedy and that would be the unification of land but not the unification of people. failure to understand the real problems of the North Korean population can potentially produce conflicts and confusion which can only lead to funker re-division and greater tragedy. It is very important to study the adjustment to problems of North Korean defectors to help prepare far the unification of the Korean people.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence nurses' implementation of evidence-based fall management in geriatric hospitals. METHODS: Data from the Evidence Based Practice Survey of Fall Management in Geriatric Hospitals were examined for this study. The participants were 248 nurses from geriatric hospitals. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and stepwise regression. RESULTS: Factors related to implementation of evidence-based fall management were belief in evidence-based practice with organizational culture, work experience, use of fall guideline, and experience of patient falls. These factors explained 56.7% of variance in implementation of evidence-based fall management. Among these factors, the significant predictors for implementation of evidence-based fall management were belief in evidence-based practice, organizational culture of evidence-based practice, work experience, use of fall guideline and experience of patient falls. CONCLUSION: Results of this study suggest that it is necessary to develop a systematic program to enhance nurses' belief in evidence-based practice at the individual level. In addition, fostering organizational culture toward evidence-based practice and disseminating fall management guidelines at the organizational level can be important strategies to enhance evidence-based fall management in geriatric hospitals.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of father's occupational stress and rearing attitude on rearing participation. METHODS: The participants of this study were 201 fathers who are raising children in J region. The data were collected by self-report using questionnaires from August to September, 2015. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient, Scheffe test, and stepwise multiple linear regression with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. RESULTS: The total mean scores of occupational stress on the subjects were 40.98(±8.36), rearing attitude were 68.54(±7.18), rearing participation were 73.16(±11.34). The study showed that occupational stress is negatively correlated with rearing participation and rearing attitude positively correlated with rearing participation. Working style and rearing attitude were identified of rearing participation. CONCLUSION: A father's rearing participation level was influenced by father's attitude of caring children above all. In addition, fathers' working styles were also a main factor. Therefore, it is necessary for fathers to learn rearing attitudes in a way that can develop a nursing intervention program to increase their rearing participation level.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the opinions of students and tutors about the use of reflective journals in Problem Based Learning performed in Seoul National University College of Medicine over a period of 4 weeks, and to determine the possible applications of such journals as an evaluation tool. METHODS & RESULTS: The writing of a reflective journal helps students to achieve some of the important PBL goals, for example, keeping such a journal encourages students to reflect on their learning experiences, and fosters problem solving skills. All students were asked to complete the same questionnaire every weeks for the four week period. Most students thought of a reflective journal as a tool for personal reflection, rather than as a tool for fostering problem solving skills. The questionnaire was rated on 5 point scale: from 'very important' to 'not important at all'. Fifty eight percent of tutors and 20% of students replied that the journal writing was 'very important'. CONCLUSION: We suggest the following items for the future application of the reflective journal as an evaluation tool. First, intimate trust should be developed between students and tutors, as a reflective journal can include private matters. Second, tutors should give feedback for the student's reflective journal. Finally, comprehensive direction should be given to students and tutors to allow them to use their reflective journals effectively.
