Formalin is a 37 5pg aqueous solution of formaldehyde gas and formaldehyde may be present in products as an active ingredient, preservative or contaminant. This contamination may be from the container, the package material or in situ formation by degradation of the formaldehyde releasers. The free formaldehyde content was determined in the 50 kinds of Korean shampoos by quantitative analysis recently described, the lutidine method, which is simple, rapid and used for colored products which cannot be analysed by the chrornotropic acid method. Formaldehyde has been found in 46 out of the 0 samples, i.e., 90g., and the concentration ranged from 0. 1 to 78. 6 pg/ml(0. 1 78. 6 ppm).

2.Sources of Formalin: II. Fromalin Concentration in Papers.
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1985;23(6):736-740
Formaldehyde and its derivatives are used to improve the wet strength, waterresistance, shrink-resistance, grease-resistance and other characteristics of paper and. paper products. We have recently analyzed 78 different kinds of paper sources which are being used in Korea by the lutidine method. The forma.ldehyde concentrations of the most paper sources were under 50 ug/gm ranges except 4 copying paper sources which were in the 50 to 100 ug/gm ranges.

Formaldehyde in adhesives is used as preseratives as well as adhesives themeseles such as phenol-formaldehyde, carbamide-formaldehyde and melarnine-forma 1dehyde. Formaldehyde content in 43 kinds of adhesives used at present in Korea was determined by lutidine method. The study result was as follows. 1. The The distribution of formaldehyde concentrations of 43 different kinds of adhesives was in the 0 to 333. 9 ppm ranges. 2. High concentration of formaldehyde was observed in 3 kinds of wall paper adhesives and 1 kind of stationary adhesive, which has an important clinical significance because of their frequent contact sources of domestic uses.

Quaternium-15 (Dowicil 200) which is a water-soluble antimicrobial agent and a formaldehyde releaser is widely being used as a preservative in cosmetics and medicaments these days. However, there are scanty reports about it in the Korean literature. Recently, we have experienced two cases of Quaternium-15 contact dermatitis probably related with their cosmetics and topical medicament, respectively. We report our cases with the patch test results.

Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society 2007;41(3):171-176
OBJECTIVE : The purpose of this study was to characterize the Rolandic fissure(Rf) and was to identify the Rf using the surface bony landmarks which can be usually exposed on craniotomy. METHODS : After morphological evaluation of the Rfs using 21 Korean adult formalin fixed cadavers, craniometric measurement was carried out from the surface bony landmarks of nasion, glabella, bregma, and lambda. RESULTS : The Rfs of both hemispheres did not show the mirror image. The Rfs ran forward and downward toward the sylvian fissure keeping the mean angle of 67degrees from mid-sagittal line as elongated S-shape in left and the elongated reverse S-shape in right hemisphere. Connections between the Rf and the longitudinal fissure and between the Rf and the sylvian fissure were found in 3 (7.1%) and 2 (4.8%) of 42 hemispheres, respectively. Most Rfs extended superiorly to 2-3mm lateral to the most superomedial surface of hemispheres and extended inferiorly to 3-5mm superior to the sylvian fissures. The mean distances from the nasion, glabella, bregma, and lambda to the most superomedial aspect of the Rf were 18.8+/-0.9cm, 16.6+/-0.8cm, 5.2+/-0.6cm, and 6.9+/-1.0cm, respectively. The mean distance measured between the Rf and the nasion using traditional method was 18.4+/-0.6cm. CONCLUSION : The distance between the Rf and the nasion roughly correspond within the range of mean 4 mm compared with that measured by the traditional measurement. These data may be more helpful to delineate the Rf after the placement of drapes for craniotomy.

Sister-chromatic exchanges measured in the peripheral lymphocytes of 15 non-smoking medical students after exposure to formaldehyde during a 24-week anatomy class showed a small but significant (p=0.0468) increase when compared with samples obtained from the same individuals immediately before exposure. Mean frequencies of sister-chromatic exchange of cultured peripheral lymphocytes were 5.40+/-0.24 from the samples before exposure and 5.87+/-0.22 from the same samples after exposure. Breathing-zone air samples collected by formaldehyde monitoring kit with digital colorimeter (SKC) showed a mean concentration of 0.72+/-0.02 ppm formaldehyde.

The fissures of lungs are embryologically separating the bronchopulmonary segments, which later on persist in interlobar planes of fully developed lung. Fifty lungs (23 right side and 27 left side), obtained during routine dissection and preserved in formalin constituted the material for present study. In them, variations in fissures and lobes of lung were observed and compared with the previous studies. Seven right sided and 14 left sided lungs showed incomplete oblique fissure. Incomplete horizontal fissure of right lung was observed in eight lungs while it was completely missing in three specimens. A right lung with “lobe of the azygos vein” separated by a supernumerary fissure in medial surface was found. One of the right lung had both superior accessory fissure and inferior accessory fissure and four other right lungs and one left lung presented only with inferior accessory fissure. A vertical notch was found in middle lobe of one right lung. Eight left lungs exhibited with left minor fissure among them two lungs had lingula appearing as a separate lobe. Knowledge of variations in fissures and lobes is of interest to all medical professionals to exactly interpret radiographs, computed tomography scans, to diagnose, plan and modify a surgical procedure depending on the merit of the case and also in certain classical clinical cases pertaining to lung pathologies.

9.CGRP Immunoreactivities Following Artificail Ureteral Calsulosis and Ureteral Chemical Irritation in the Rat.
Korean Journal of Anatomy 1998;31(4):557-564
The aim of the present study was to investigate the CGRP-IR pattern in the ureter in stone-implanted rats and ureteral formalin irritated rats. Artificial ureteral stone rats were made according to Giamberardino's guide lines. For urethral formalin irritated rats, a small amount of diluted formalin was instilled into the ureter. The behavioral characteristics were observed and recorded with CCTV and analyzed, statistically. The rats showing characteristic visceral episode were sacrificed three days after stone implantation operation and after overnight chemical irritation followed by immunostaining of the ureter with anti-CGRP on the ureter In the artificial ureteral stone rats, CGRP IR fiber pattern showed variable changes on the upper portion of the stone implanted ureter. i.e., complete depletion, reticular pattern, and reticular pattern with more increased CGRP immunoreactivity were observed. In contrast, more-distinct CGRP IR fibers formed a reticular pattern but were not increased in density in the formalin irritated ureter. The results show the variable changing pattern of CGRP immunoreactivity in the ureter after artificial urethral calculosis, and the constant CGRP immunoreactivity in the ureter after chemical ureteral irritation.

10.Detection of formaldehyde in textiles.
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1991;29(2):155-158
Formaldehyde is contained in various everyday products such as shampoos, detergents, leathers and papers, and is thought to be one of the important couses of clothing related contact dermatitis(ACD). The results about the minimum sensitizing concentrations of formaldehyde were different, and the concentration of 30 pg per gram of textiles was the least one. We measured the quantity of formaldehyde in 16 different types of textiles which are widely used in Korea to investigate whether the textiles contain an enough amount of formaldehyde to induce ACD and washing can reduce the amount of it. The results were as follows : 1. The quantity of formaldehyde ranged from 3 to 1246 pg per gram of textiles. 2. Three types textiles contained more than 100pg of formaldehyde per gram of textiles and 6 between 50 pg and 100pg. 3. 1.00% cotton, ramie and rayon contained the highest content of formaldehyde per gram fabric. 4. After washing, the average quantity of formaldehyde decreased to 60% of that, of pre-wash measure.
