Objectives: Folate is an essential nutrient associated with healthy pregnancy outcomes. Women of child-bearing age (WOCBA) are advised to maintain optimum blood folate status through adequate dietary folate intakes and folic acid from supplements. This study was aimed at assessing the level of knowledge, attitude, and perceived practice (KAP) among WOCBA on the importance of folate periconceptionally.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 184 healthy WOCBA in the Province of Batangas. The level of KAP was expressed as percent mean scores and were interpreted as poor, moderate, or high for knowledge and perceived practices and negative, neutral, or positive for attitude. Pearson's correlation of coefficient was used to measure the linear correlation between variables at a 95% level of significance.

Results: About 70% of respondents have heard of folate. The study showed a moderate level of knowledge, positive attitude, and moderate perceived practices related to folate among WOCBA. Age and civil status were associated with KAP. A significantly weak positive association (r=0.4, p<0.000) between the level of attitude and perceived practice related to folate was observed. Further, the level of knowledge showed significantly positive moderate association to attitude (r=0.7, p<0.000) and perceived practice (r=0.5, p<0.000).

Conclusion: Increasing the level of knowledge on folate suggests a positive attitude and a higher level of perceived practice. The findings of the study suggest a need to increase knowledge on folate among WOCBA, especially, in younger women. Also, there is a need to emphasize the importance of adequate folate intakes from food and folic acid supplements, periconceptionally.

Microbiological method using a 96-well microplate reader for folate assay was established, and folate intake and blood folate concentrations of 23 female college students were assessed. To evaluate folate intake, dietary data were collected by a 3-day weight food record, and serum and RBC folate concentrations were measured by the new method. The coefficient of variation for the new method was less than 10%. Mean daily folate intake of the subjects was 126.7ug which is only 50.7% of the RDA. The mean concentrations of serum and RBC folate were 7.46ng/ml and 294.4ng/ml, respectively, which were within the normal range. These results indicate that folate intake seems to be underestimated due to incomplete food composition database. Therefore, folate database should be appropriately in order to asses folate intake accurately.

Objective: To analyze the folate status among women of childbearing age worldwide from 2000 to 2020, and explore the impact of socioeconomic factors on folate status, so as to provide support for the formulation of relevant supplementary policies in China in the future. Methods: The "folate" "folic acid" "deficiency" "status" "women" "childbearing" and "reproductive" were used as Chinese and English keywords to systematically search CNKI and PubMed database. Global Health Data Exchange database (GDHx), Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia datasets (BRINDA) and Ground Work publications were systematically searched with "micronutrients" and "nutrition" as keywords. The retrieval time was from January 1, 2000 to August 31, 2020, and the language was restricted to English and Chinese. After title, abstract and full-text screening, a total of 45 literatures were included. The folate status of women of childbearing age in the eligible literature was analyzed, and the income and folate status were tested by Kruskal Wallis H test and Nemenyi test. Results: The M (Q₁, Q₃) of serum folate deficiency rate and erythrocyte folate insufficiency rate in women of childbearing age were 15.0% (3.5%, 37.0%) and 49.0% (22.0%, 83.0%). There were great differences in serum folate status and serum folate deficiency rate among women of childbearing age in different income countries. The serum folate deficiency rate of women of childbearing age in low-income countries was significantly higher than that in middle and high-income countries. Conclusion: The folate status of women of childbearing age in most countries has not reached the ideal state from 2000 to 2020. More studies on folate supplementation programs should be carried out.

The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of nutrition education program and pamphlet for the lower grades elementary students focused on individual daily needed food exchange units using Food Exchange System. Program consisted of four lessons (40 min/lesson), "5 major nutrients & function", "6 food group and sources", "daily needed food exchange units for normal body weight", and "smart snack choice and exercise". Pamphlet as activity book was developed for the program. The subjects were 3rd grade elementary students (educated group, 31 vs. non-educated group, 31). Educated group were lessoned as group and/or individual. We examined the differences in nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes, dietary intakes and satisfaction of the program and pamphlet. In educated group, there were positive improvements on nutrition knowledge score "function and foods of 5 nutrients" and on dietary attitudes "type of breakfast and snacks". In the evaluation of dietary intakes according to KDRI, there were positive improvements on intakes level of riboflavin, vit. C, folate, Ca, P, Fe and Zn in educated group. In satisfaction with the program and pamphlet, contents, font size, visual, figure, difficulty and program curriculum were over 2.90/3.0. It showed that the developed nutrition education program and pamphlet focused on individual daily needed food exchange units using Food Exchange System improved nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes and nutrients intake level in the lower grades elementary students.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: High serum homocysteine level is recognised as one of risk factors for epileptic seizure. Folate is involved in the homocysteine metabolism and low serum folate level increases the frequency of the seizure activity. The purpose of this study is to examine the changes of the serum levels of homocysteine and folate in epileptic patients and to evaluate the correlation between the severity of seizure and serum levels of homocysteine and folate. METHOD: Subjects were 17 patients who were diagnosed as idiopathic epilepsy and the control group was composed of age and sex matched 17 healthy adults. The serum homocysteine level was measured with the Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (CLIA), and folate level was measured with Radioimmuno assay (RIA). The severity of seizure was measured by using National Hospital Seizure Scale. RESULTS: The serum level of homocysteine was significantly higher in the patients group than in control group. However, the serum level of folate was not different between two group. The relationship between the seizure severity and the serum levels of homocysteine and folate showed positive correlations. CONCLUSIONS: There results reveal that the serum homocysteine may effect on the epileptic seizure severity.

A trienzyme extraction method (use of alpha-amylase, protease and folate conjugase) for food folate assay has been used to release folate from the food matrix. In order to reduce the incubation time with three enzymes, folate values were compared between two incubation protocols; separate incubation (SI, incubated with alpha-amylase and conjugase separately for 2 hours after protease treatment) and combined incubation (CI, incubated with alpha-amylase and conjugase together for 2 hours after protease treatment) using 88 food items from 12 kinds of fast foods and processed foods. We found that folate values by CI were comparable to or higher than those by SI, indicating that CI might be a better extraction procedure to shorten the entire incubation time. We measured folate contents in 49 fast foods and 26 processed foods by microbiological assay after CI. Mean folate contents of one serving of various burgers ranged from 43.1 to 62.0 microgram. One serving of French fries, pizza, sandwich and triangled kimbab contained a mean of 53.3, 28.4, 47.4, and 25.7 microgram of folate, respectively. Folate contents of non-alcoholic beverages were very low, ranging from 1.0 to 5.2 microgram/100 g. Some of our values were comparable to the values in the folate database published in Korean Nutrition Society, however, some of the published values were 140 times higher than the measured values in this study. Folate values measured by the more recent modifications here can be used to update Korean folate database to accurately estimate dietary folate intake
