Objective: To investigate the cultural and psychological adaptation of business expatriates in the Chinese mainland. Methods: The questionnaires included sociocultural adaptation questionnaire and psychological adaptation questionnaire. Results: The construct of sociocultural adaptation could be divided into three dimensions: living conditions, interaction and communication, and cognition and value system. The sociocultural adaptation pattern showed a double-U-curve and the psychological adaptation pattern showed a decreasing tendency by time. There was no significant discrepancy in sociocultural adaptation across cultural distance. Conclusion: The cultural and psychological adaptation is difficult for business expatriates in China. The reasons perhaps include insufficient cultural training and improper training time.

AIM: To investigate two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the apolipoprotein(a) promoter at positions -418 and -384 and to compare distributing difference of genotype frequencies of single nucleotide among different races and to explore the influencies of them on serum lipid level and their association with coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS: Using PCR-RFLP (BsgI,BfaI) method, we determined genotypes of these two SNPs in 156 unrelated healthy controls of HanZu Chinese and 56 unrelated CHD patients of HanZu Chinese and 56 unrelated African Blacks, then cloned polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products into T-vector and sequenced it by M13 currency primer, correspondingly. RESULTS: (1) There was no polymorphism at position -418A/A and -384C/C in control group. Only one CHD patient′s genotype determined was -418G/G, other were -418A/A and (-384C/C) in CHD patients. (2) Only two African Blacks′ genotype determined was -418G/G, other were -418A/A and (-384C/C) in African Blacks. (3) However, the Apo(a) promoter sequence was in coincident with the sequence publicized in GenBank and the base at positions -418 was adenine (A) and -384 was cytosine (C). CONCLUSION: The mutation frequencies at position -418 and -384 are low in the Chinese Han Population of Hubei and perhaps no single nucleotide polymorphisms is at two positions. No association with serum lipid levels and CHD is observed. There may be great variabilities to the SNPs in the Apo(a) promoter among different races.

Objective To investigate the changes and significance of concentration of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(sICAM-1) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of bacterial meningitis(BM) in rabbits. Methods A total of 36 rabbits were randomly divided into m eningitis group, meningitis cefotaxime-treated group and control group. BM indu ced by escherichia coli(Ec) via cerebellomedullary cistern inoculated. Normal sa line was injected in control group. CSF was sampled in different time. The conce ntration of CSF sICAM-1 was detected by ELISA.Results 1.There was a low concentration of sICAM-1 in CSF in 85 percent of normal rabbi ts.2.In meningitis group, there was a sharp rise in the concentration of CSF sIC AM-1 at 6 hours after Ec was inoculated, reached a peak level at 12 hours, and t here was higher concentration of CSF sICAM-1 between 6 and 24 hour than that at 0 hour.3.In meningitis cefotaxime-treated group, the concentration of CSF sICAM -1 at 6 hour and 12 hours was similar to meningitis group, the time that get pe ak level was at 24 hours that at 12 hours after making use of antimicrobial agen t.The peak level was higher than meningitis group. The concentration of CSF sICA M-1 decreased markedly at 48 hours that made use of antimicrobial agent 36 hour s later, but the concentration was still higher than the peak level of meningitis group.Afterwards, with the time of making use of antimicrobial agent lengthened ,the concentration of CSF sICAM-1 decreased gradually.4.Experimental results in dicated by correlating analysis to these data that there was positive correlatio n in the concentration of CSF sICAM-1 with the brain water content. Conclusions sICAM-1 participates in the pathological process of BM, and contributes to the damage of blood brain barrier and the formation of brain edema. There is importan t significance that drugs which can resist the discharge of sICAM-1 will be impl ied. OBJECTIVETo study the effects of inhalation enflurane (Enf) before aortic clamping on myocardial reperfusion injury in cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
METHODShirty patents undergoing selective cardiac valve replacement were randomly allocated to three groups. Group I and group II inhaled 1.0 MAC and 0.5 MAC Enf before clamping aorta, respectively. Group III was the control group interval administration with Fentanyl.
RESULTSImmediately upon aortic clamp release (T2), the value of CK-MB, MDA and SOD of all the groups was significantly increased, however, their concentration did not peak significantly until T3 and T4(10 and 30 min after clamp aorta release). The levels at 60 min (T5) and 24 hours (T6) aorta were lower than T4 but still higher than T(0). At T3 and T4, CK-MB levels in group I were significantly higher than those in II and III groups (P=0.0220, 0.0108 and 0.0202, 0.0295). At T6, the CK-MB level of group II was significantly higher than that of group III (P<0.0001). At T4 and T5, the MDA value of group I was higher than that of group II (P=0.0060 and 0.0364). Meanwhile, the SOD level in group I was also higher than that of group II and group III at the T4 point (P<0.0001 and 0.0084). There was a correlation between the CK-MB value and the aorta clamping time, correlation coefficient range being 0.55 - 0.81,(P<0.05). However, there was no correlation between the CK-MB and MDA, SOD.
CONCLUSIONThere is ischemia reperfusion injury during cardiac surgery CPB with the increase of OFR production and elevation of the antioxidant reserve. Inhalation of large dose of enflurane may result in increased myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury manifested by elevated levels of myocardial enzymes and OFR production.

Objective: To study the nursing of patients with morbid obesity treated with laparoscopic vertical banded gastroplasty (LVBG). Methods: Before operation, obese degree, obesity-related conditions and mental states were examined routinely. Monitoring of respiratory tract, observing operative complications and instructing of diets were done after operation. Results: Among 6 patients, 5 were at the third degree of obese, one was at second. In obesity-related conditions, 4 patients had hypertension and acantha derma, 1 had arthritis, and all had respiratory sleeping syndrome. The operations were all successful. The food amount food and body weight both decreased significantly 1 month after operation. The common operative complications were mild bleeding (1 case), shoulder-back pain (1 case), nausea and vomiting (5 cases). Diet principle was high protein, low energy, liquid food was the first choice. Conclusion: Observing and preventing respiratory sleeping syndrome are the main points of postoperative cares. Instructing patients to establish correct diet habit is the key to reach the best efficacy of LVBG.

OBJECTIVETo screen effective sequences of small interfering RNA targeting MDR1 gene in human gastric cancer SGC7901/VCR cells.
METHODSFour siRNAs (MDR1si326, MDR1si1513, MDR1si2631 and MDR1si3071) targeting MDR1 gene were designed and synthesized by in vitro transcription. The siRNA duplexes were used to transfect into the human gastric cancer SGC7901/VCR cells. The expression level of MDR1 mRNA and P-gp were detected by RT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. The accumulation of intracellular adriamycin (ADR) was examined by flow cytometry and the cell sensitivity to ADR was demonstrated by MTT.
RESULTSThe SGC7901/VCR cells treated with 4 siRNAs led to reversal effect on multidrug resistance to different extents. Among the SGC7901/VCR cells treated by siRNAs for 48 h, the expression level of MDR1 mRNA in cells of MDR1si326 or MDR1si2631 group (0.42 +/- 0.07 or 0.49 +/- 0.02) was more decreased than that in cells of MDR1si1513 or MDR1si3071 group (P < 0.05). The accumulation of ADR in cells of MDR1si326 group was the most; in cells of MDR1si2631 group, more; in cells of MDR1si3071 group, lower and in cells of MDR1si1513 group, the lowest (P < 0.05). The relative reversal efficiency of cells of MDR1si2631 group to ADR was the highest and in cells of MDR1si326 group, higher (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the relative reversal efficiency between the cells of MDR1si1513 and MDR1si3071 groups (P > 0.05). The expression level of P-gp in cells of MDR1si326 group was the lowest among the SGC7901/VCR cells treated by siRNAs for 72 h.
CONCLUSIONThe MDR1si326 with most, MDR1si2631 with more, MDR1si3071 with less and MDR1si1513 with least reversal effects on MDR1 gene mediated multidrug resistance were found in the human gastric cancer SGC7901/VCR cells.
