Philippine Journal of Ophthalmology 2021;46(2):96-102
Objectives:
To determine the normative values for upper eyelid and eyebrow dimensions among adult Filipinos
and the effects of age and sex on these parameters.
Methods:
This was a prospective, descriptive study involving 75 Filipino adults who were recruited from a single
tertiary government hospital in the Philippines. Profile data collected included age and sex, while clinical data
included measurements of the pretarsal skin height (PSH), eyelid crease height (ECH) and eyebrow height (EBH)
by a single observer, with the average of an individual’s eyes used as the representative measurement. An intereye correlation coefficient was calculated. The subjects were categorized into 4 age groups (i.e. early, early middle,
late middle, and late adulthood) and according to gender for statistical analyses. All measurements were compared
across age groups using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and between sexes using t-test.
Results:
This study included 43 males and 32 females. Overall, mean PSH measured was 4.5 ± 1.5 mm; mean ECH
was 5.9 ± 1.7 mm, while mean EBH was 10.4 ± 2.7 mm. Means of PSH and EBH showed similar measurements
between sexes. The mean ECH of females in early adulthood was significantly higher than the mean ECH of males
belonging to the same age group (p=0.01). Among the female group, mean EBH was also observed to increase with
age (p=0.02). A high degree of inter-eye correlation was observed (r = 0.94 to 1.00).
Conclusion
Filipinos have unique upper eyelid and brow features compared to other races. Sex-related differences
were not identified in PSH and EBH. While EBH increased with age among female subjects.

Moderate to severe unilateral ptosis has previously been treated with levator resection or frontalis sling and cosmetic double fold in the opposite eyelid. This method often resulted in undesirable asymmetrical lid lag phenomenon in down gaze. From December 1991 to December 1994, we treated 65 cases of unilateral ptosis with frontalis sling or levator resection, and simultaneously cosmetic frontalis sling have been performed in the unaffected normal eyes of 41 patients and cosmetic double fold have been performed in the unaffected normal eyes of 11 patients. After 6 months of operation, authors survey the patients content. The number of cases of content were 4(36.36%) in 11 cosmetic double fold group and 31(75.6%) in 41 cosmetic frontalis sling group. The content after cosmetic frontalis sling was higher than cosmetic double fold. Asymmetrical lid lag phenomenon on downward gaze which is inevitable complication postoperatively was reduced by means of cosmetic frontalis sling of unafeected normal eye in unilatral ptosis. The authors expect that the patient will be more satisfied with the result of symmetrical lid lag in down gaze after cosmetic frontalis sling of unaffected normal eye in aesthetic aspect.

Lid retraction is one of the most common problems in Grave's disease. Many techniques for correction of the upper eyelid retraction have been described. The authors performed surgeries for correction of upper lid retraction by means of transconjunctival and transcutaneous recession of the aponeurosis of the levator muscle and Muller's muscle. From March 1997 to June 1999, 8 patients underwent for unilateral upper lid retraction through transcutaneous approaches and 6 patients through transconjunctival approaches.Transcutaneous and transcon-junctival approaches were effective when the recession was 1.54 mm, and 2.43 mm, respectively for every millimeter of correction for retraction desired. Two approaches were safe and efficacious and could be used for all degrees of eyelid retraction, but transcutaneous approach was thought to be more appropriate for severe eyelid retraction and blephraplasty simultaneously than transconjunctival approach.

10.The Surgical Effect of Full-Thickness Eyelid Resection in Traumatic Blepharoptosis.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1989;30(2):163-170
There are various surgical methods to correct blepharoptosis. Traumatic blepharoptosis is often the most difficult to correct. The authors experienced three cases of traumatic blepharoptosis, which had lid laxity, poor levator function and were severe in degree. Full-thickness eyelid rese ctions were performed and good cosmetic results were obtained. We report three cases of traumatic blepharoptosis treated with full-thickness eyelid resection and reviewed the literatures.
