Controlled-release carbamazepine (CBZ) could be more harmful than the regular form in special situations due to their respective biochemical characteristics. When primary treatment is not effective in acute intoxication, extracorporeal treatment (ECTR) could be an option. We recently applied ECTR to a patient with combined intoxication of topiramate and controlled-release CBZ who deteriorated despite receiving primary treatment. The patient improved after administering ECTR. Early ECTR intervention may be beneficial for the treatment of CBZ intoxication, especially of the controlled-release form.

Changes of alveolar-arterial oxygen tension differences (AaDO2) after 35 cases of open heart surgery were evaluated with durations of extracorporeal circulation and prognosis. Following results were obtained. 1) AaDO2 values of pre-bypass in fatal open great cases were higher than in survival cases. 2) AaDO2 values of post-bypass were similar and noted no correlation to progonsis. 3) Luration of extracorporeal bypass time in fatal cases were longer than in survival cases. 4) Changes of AaDO2 values after extracorporeal circulation were much correlated to AaDO2 of pre-bypass than those of post-bypass.

Implanting a pacemaker is the most often used intervention for treating bradycardia. The most commonly used pacemaker is the intracardiac pacemaker, yet it can have many complications. An infected pacemaker can spread to systemic infection and the condition of the patient can quickly get worse, so if an infected pacemaker is suspected, then the pacemaker must be removed. Apart from the use of interventional methods such as a loop or a weight, we can take a more aggressive approach by using extracorporeal circulation for removal of the pacemaker. We report here on two cases in which extracorporeal circulation was used to remove the infected pacemakers.

This paper mainly studies the driving system of centrifugal blood pump for extracorporeal circulation, with the core being disc magnetic coupling. Structure parameters of disc magnetic coupling are related to the ability of transferring magnetic torque. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out disc magnetic coupling permanent magnet pole number (n), air gap length (L(g)), permanent magnet thickness (L(m)), permanent magnet body inside diameter (R(i)) and outside diameter (R(o)), etc. thoroughly. This paper adopts the three-dimensional static magnetic field edge element method of Ansys for numerical calculation, and analyses the relations of magnetic coupling each parameter to transmission magnetic torque. It provides a good theory basis and calculation method for further optimization of the disc magnetic coupling.
