PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of a simulated disability program on attitude and stereotyping by nursing students toward people with disabilities. METHODS: A total of 107 undergraduate nursing students attended and completed pre-and post-questionnaires on attitude and stereotyping. The experimental group participated in a simulation exercise program which was composed of wheel-chair mobility and vision modification in Nam-won Rehabilitation Center. The data were analyzed by the SPSS 12.0 program including frequency, percentage, chi-square test and t-test. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in attitude toward people with disabilities between the two groups (t=-.743, p=.459). But there was a significant difference in stereotyping between the experimental and the control group(t=-4.097, p=.000). CONCLUSION: As the result of this study, we can conclude that the program was effective to improve stereotyping toward people with disabilities.

Primary segmental volvulus (PSV) of the ileum in neonate occurs rarely but shows an aggressive clinical course. Thus, early diagnosis is important to prevent necrosis and perforation of the intestine. We report a case of PSV of the ileum in a 2-day-old female neonate whose clinical features and radiologic findings appeared to be meconium plug syndrome.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to project supply and demand for registered nurses to the year 2015 and to make recommendations regarding nurse manpower planning for the 21st century in Korea. METHODS: The supply of nurses was predicted using a baseline projection and demographic methods. The demand for nurses was forecasted by the derivative method. RESULTS: Projections indicate there will be an oversupply of nurses based on the current productivity. However, there will be under-supply if predictions are based on the standard for nursing staff established by the medical law and the optimal productivity derived by the patient classification system. CONCLUSION: Korea needs more practicing nurses. One way to increase the number of practicing nurses is to increase the number of graduates. However, considering the low retention rate of nurses, a better way to solve the nurse shortage problem is to develop strategies to recruit and retain nurses.

PURPOSE: This study was done to analyze core competencies affecting critical thinking ability of student nurses. Core competencies investigated in this study were problem solving ability, communication ability and self-directed learning ability. METHOD: Data were collected from a convenience sample of 322 student nurses in 2 provinces during the period from May 21 to June 8, 2007. Critical thinking, problem solving ability, communication ability and self-directed learning ability were measured using the Disposition towards Critical Thinking Scale by Park (1999-a) and the Core Competencies Scale by Lee (2003). Descriptive statistics and correlation coefficients with the SPSS WIN 12.0 program were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: There were significant differences in the critical thinking according to grade, type of high school, experience with PBL, preference for lecture-based learning, preference for discussion and perceived logicality. The score for critical thinking showed significantly positive correlations with scores for problem solving ability (r=0.54, p=0.00), communication ability (r=0.56, p=0.00) and self-directed learning ability (r=0.54, p=0.00). CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that problem solving ability, communication ability and self-directed learning ability are significant factors affecting critical thinking in student nurses.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts of older adults aged 65 years and older. METHODS: A part of the 2014 Community Health Survey data were used for analysis. Responses of 3,287 older adults living in Chungbuk province were analyzed using complex sample multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The percentages of older people who experienced suicidal ideation and attempt during the past year were 21.7% and 0.8%, respectively. Limitation of daily living activities, pain/discomfort, stress and depression were significant risk factors of older adults' suicidal ideation. The significant risk factor of suicidal attempt was suicidal ideation, followed by depression and limitation of daily activities. The frequencies of elderly people using professional counseling related to the stress, depression or suicidal ideation were very low showing 2.1%, 1.8%, and 1.4% respectively. The protective impact of counselling on suicidal ideation and attempt were not able to be identified because of the low rate of participation of counselling program in this study. CONCLUSION: The common risk factors of suicidal ideation and attempt were depression and the limitation of daily activity; therefore, community services for them should be emphasized. In addition, there should be an effort to increase the utilization rate of professional counselling and to identify the effects of counselling on the prevention of suicidal behaviors.

Background: Epidemiological data are crucial in designing policies for the control of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. There is a lack of data on the epidemiology of HIV in Korean correctional facilities such as jails and prisons. Methods: Clinical characteristics of the study population were collected through a medical record review. Results: The number of people with HIV infection were 83 and the HIV infection prevalence in correctional facilities of Korea was 0.15%. Among them, 10 (12.0%) were diagnosed with the infection when they were incarcerated. The number of drug users was 38 (45.8%).Syphilis-HIV coinfection was observed in 21 (25.3%) patients. Individuals from the group comprising the drug users were more likely to belong to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) community, and had a higher incidence of psychological disorders (31.6% vs. 11.1%, P = 0.029; 50.0% vs. 28.9%, P = 0.049, respectively). Conclusion Inmates of correctional facilities showed a five times higher prevalence of HIV infection in Korea, nearly half of whom were drug users.

Bell's palsy is an acute-onset unilateral peripheral facial neuropathy. For patients with sequelae of facial paresis, the successful rehabilitation of fully edentulous arches is challenging. This case report described the treatment procedures and clinical considerations to fabricate complete dentures of a patient who showed unilateral displacement of mandible, unilateral chewing pattern and parafunctional jaw movement due to sequelae of Bell's palsy. Gothic arch tracing was used to record reproducible centric relation and lingualized occlusion was performed to provide freedom to move between centric relation and the patient's habitual functional area in fabricating satisfactory dentures in terms of function and esthetics.

An isolated tubular intestinal loop (ITIL) means an anatomical or vascular communication with rest of the bowel loop and may provide an insight into the pathogenesis of intestinal atresia. We experienced a case of an ITIL identified in omentum of a 4-day-old neonate with type-II intestinal atresia. To our knowledge, this association has never been reported in the English literature. Omental wrapping of the incompletely resorbed ischemic bowel segment may explain this phenomenon in a case of congenital intestinal atresia.

PURPOSE: Choledochal cysts are congenital dilatations of the biliary tract and are generally surgically excised. Laparoscopic total excision of choledochal cysts and hepaticojejunal biliary tract reconstruction has gained acceptance among pediatric surgeons. We report our early experience with this procedure. METHODS: From May 2013 to April 2016, 10 consecutive patients (7 females and 3 males) underwent laparoscopic choledochal cyst excision and hepaticojejunostomy at our center. We retrospectively reviewed their medical records for age, sex, clinical symptoms, Todani classification, anomalous pancreaticobiliary duct union, operative time, starting day for enteral feeding, complications, and hospital stay. RESULTS: The median patient age was 22 months. Four patients were aged less than 6months, 3 of whom received prenatal diagnosis using ultrasonography. Patients presented with abdominal pain, jaundice, vomiting and fever. No abdominal mass was palpated in any patient. One patient was classified as Todani type Ia, 4 as Ic, and 5as IVa. Six patients had an anomalous pancreaticobiliary duct union. The mean operative time was 319.4 minutes. There were no surgery-related complications. Sips of water were allowed from mean postoperative day 2.4 and regular diet from mean postoperative day 3.4. The mean hospital stay was 6.5 days. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic excision of choledochal cyst and hepaticojejunostomy in children is feasible with favorable cosmesis.
