A new fibrinogen system, consisting of highly concentrated fibrinogen and thrombin, is going to be applied in many clinical fields. Especially in injuries of the cartilagenous joint surface as chondral or osteochondral fractures, replantation of the fragments must be considered mandarory in order to preserve joint congruence and to prevent further destruction of the articular cartilage. The authors have an encouraging results by using this fibrin adhesive system (F.A.S.) in the experimental works.

2.A Case of Peters' Anomaly.

Peters' anomaly is a congenital, central corneal stromal opacity usually associated with a defect in the posterior sttroma and Descemet's membrane and anterior synechiae which extend from the pupillary zone of the iris to the periphery of the corneal opacification. The authors experienced a case of Peters' anomaly which occurred in the right eye of 12-day-old male. Under the slit-lamp examination, the right cornea had a central white corneal opacity with adherence of the iris strands to the leukoma and an opaque lens. Intraocular pressure was within normal limits in both eyes.

4.Diagnostic Value of Plain Abdominal Radiography in Stroke Patients With Bowel Dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic value of plain abdominal radiography in stroke patients with bowel dysfunction. METHODS: A total of 59 stroke patients were recruited and assigned into constipation or non-constipation group. Patients were interviewed to obtain clinical information, constipation score, and Bristol stool form scale. The total and segmental colon transit time (CTT) was measured using radio-opaque markers (Kolomark). The degree of stool retention was evaluated by plain abdominal radiography and scored by two different methods (Starreveld score and Leech score). The relationship between the clinical aspects, CTT, and stool retention score using plain abdominal radiography was determined. RESULTS: Average constipation score was 4.59+/-2.16. Average Bristol stool form scale was 3.86+/-1.13. The total and segmental CTTs showed significant differences between the constipation and non-constipation groups. There was statistically significant (p<0.05) correlation between the total CTT and constipation score or between Starreveld score and Leech score. Each segmental CTT showed significant correlation (p<0.05) between segmental stool retention scores. CONCLUSION: The stool retention score showed significant correlation with constipation score as well as total and segmental CTT. Thus, plain abdominal radiography is a simple and convenient method for the evaluation of bowel dysfunction in stroke patients.

5.The First Case of Primary Retroperitoneal Mucinous Cystadenoma in Korea: A Case Report.

Primary mucinous cystic cystadenomas of the retroperitoneum are very rarely encountered, and there have been only about 30 cases reported in the literature. The histogenesis of primary mucinous cystadenomas is unclear. Most authors suggested that it develops through mucinous metaplasia in a pre-existing mesothelium-lined cyst. Complete surgical excision is the only treatment and it is required for the final diagnosis and cure. We present here a case report of a 38-year-old Korean woman with primary retroperitoneal cystadenoma. It was a thin-walled, multilocular cyst with a dominant loculus that measured 10.0 X 7.5 X 5.5 cm3 in size, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first such case to be reported in in Korea.

Eradication regimens for Helicobacter pylori infection have some side effects, compliance problems, relapses, and antibiotic resistance. Therefore, alternative anti-H. pylori or supportive antimicrobial agents with fewer disadvantages are necessary for the treatment of H. pylori. We investigated the pH-(5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0, and 10.0) and concentration (0.032, 0.064, 0.128, 0.256, 0.514, and 1.024 mg/mL)-dependent antibacterial activity of crude urushiol extract from the sap of the Korean lacquer tree (Rhus vernicifera Stokes) against 3 strains (NCTC11637, 69, and 219) of H. pylori by the agar dilution method. In addition, the serial (before incubation, 3, 6, and 10 min after incubation) morphological effects of urushiol on H. pylori were examined by electron microscopy. All strains survived only within pH 6.0-9.0. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of the extract against strains ranged from 0.064 mg/mL to 0.256 mg/mL. Urushiol caused mainly separation of the membrane, vacuolization, and lysis of H. pylori. Interestingly, these changes were observed within 10 min following incubation with the 1 x minimal inhibitory concentrations of urushiol. The results of this work suggest that urushiol has potential as a rapid therapeutic against H. pylori infection by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane.

8.Comparative Study for DNA Extraction Methods from femurs in case of naming unidentified bodies.

In historical cases, missing persons' identification, mass disasters, and ancient DNA investigations, bone samples are often the only and always the best biological materials available for DNA typing. There are many protocols for the extraction of DNA from bone samples. In our experiment, we tested three DNA extraction protocols: Ethanol down method, Microcon(R) YM-100 and DNA IQ(TM) system. We have found that ethanol down method is not suitable to extract DNA from bone samples and Microcon(R) YM-100 is the best among these three mothods. DNA IQ(TM) System did not show better result but needed less time and labor than Microcon(R) YM-100. So, we expect using DNA IQ(TM) System is useful in case of bone samples which are not severely contaminated .

Break of a stent delivery catheter and subsequent stent loss (SL) has been a rare event in the drug-eluting stent (DES) era. We here report a case of successful retrieval of a stent after a break if the delivery catheter and SL from a balloon catheter at a culprit lesion. We finally resolved this situation using a simple balloon technique for both the broken stent catheter inside of the guide catheter and the unexpanded stent in the culprit lesion. Thus balloons are an important weapon in our armamentarium in the cardiac catheterization laboratory for urgent retrieval of a lost stent. Their apt use definitely allowed our patient to avoid undergoing emergency cardiovascular thoracic surgery.

The fifteen persons from In-jae, Kang-won do, were missing by floods on July 2006. In relation to the this case, the two unidentified corpses were found nearby So-yang lake on June and September 2007, respectively. In these cases, autosome short tandem repeats (STR) and Y-STR were used for identification. The AmpFlSTR Identifiler kit (amelogenin and 15 STRs) and the AmpFlSTR Yfiler kit (16 Y-STRs) are analysed by multiplex-PCR and automated fluorescent detection using Perkin Elmer Prism 310 DNA sequencer. Finally we could found identify the two missing persons.
