Asian Oncology Nursing 2020;20(4):141-149
Purpose:
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is an important health concern among breast cancer survivors. However, CRF is apt to be dismissed as a minor discomfort by medical professionals. This study aimed to understand the experience of CRF in breast cancer survivors.
Methods:
We conducted a qualitative study using in-depth interviews and thematic analysis. The 14 participants were over the age of 40, complained of fatigue, and had been battling breast cancer for at least eight months to up to 16 years.
Results:
The analysis revealed four themes: traces of fighting cancer, inseparable part of the self, difficulty in daily life, and the body’s signals for care.Chronic fatigue initially disrupted the daily lives of the participants. As time passed, fatigue made it difficult for patients to fulfill their roles within their families, and gradually alienated friends and neighbors. Nevertheless, they tried to overcome the symptoms of fatigue by responding sensitively to the warning signs or changes in their bodies.
Conclusion
Breast cancer survivors often worry about relapse due to persistent fatigue after treatment completion. Therefore, the results of this study may be useful in developing strategies tailored for managing CRF using a multifaceted approach.
3.Discriminating Factors of Stages of Change in Bone Mass Promoting Behaviors after Bone Mineral Densitometry.
Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing 2007;19(3):389-400
Purposes: This study was designed to explore the stage distribution of subjects according to stage of change for calcium intake and for exercise, and to identify factors that could discriminate among subjects in various stages. METHODS: The sample consisted of 142 subjects who had taken bone mineral densitometry tests. The instruments used in this study were the Stage Placement Instrument for Calcium Intake and Exercise, the Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale and the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test, and the Osteoporosis Self Efficacy Scale. Data were analyzed using chi square, ANOVA, and discriminant analysis by using the SPSS 12.0 program. RESULTS: For calcium stages, economic level, calcium knowledge, positive social norms for calcium intake, & educational level showed high standardized canonical discriminant function coefficients. For exercise stages, exercise efficacy, susceptibility, exercise benefit, educational level, positive social norm to exercise, educational level, and exercise barrier showed high standardized canonical discriminant function coefficients. CONCLUSION: This study implies that bone mass promoting program incorporating a stages of change model can be applied as useful nursing intervention.

4.Predictive Factors for Use of Complementary and Alternative Therapies in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients.
Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing 2002;14(2):184-193
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the characteristics of the user of complementary?alternative therapies(CAT) and to identify the important predictive factors associated with them. METHOD: This study included 142 patients attending outpatient rheumatology clinics of D Hospital in Busan between July and August in 2001. The multiple logistic regression model was developed to estimate the likelihood of user or nonuser of CAT. RESULT: The duration of illness and chance score of health locus of control were found to be significant factors through the estimated coefficients of using CAT. Duration of illness is longer and chance score of health locus of control is higher in patients who have used CAT in past than that of nonuser. When the model performance was evaluated by comparing the observed outcome with predicted outcome, the model correctly identified 95% of user of CAT and 31% of nonuser. CONCLUSION: In this survey, duration of illness and chance score of health locus of control are found to be significant factors in predicting utilization of CAT. Nurses who care for rheumatoid arthritis patients should take consideration into health locus of control in planning health education programs.

Korean Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases 2014;21(3):191-198
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical manifestations, contact history, and status of tuberculosis contact investigations in school-age children and adolescents with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) at two centers. METHODS: This study was conducted with 54 patients in the age ranging from 10 to 18 years, who were diagnosed with pulmonary TB at the Pusan National University Hospital and Pusan National University Children's Hospital, January 2008 to December 2012. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the patients. RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 16 years old; 11 patients were aged 10 to 14 and 43 patients were aged 15 to 18. Among 54 patients, 19 had history of contact with pulmonary TB, 10 had contact with house members (household), and remaining 9 had contact with classmates (non-household). One out of 10 patients who had household contacts and 6 out of 9 patients who had non-household contacts were evaluated with contact investigation after the exposure to pulmonary TB. Among 7 patients who were evaluated with contact investigation, 3 were diagnosed with active pulmonary TB, 1 had latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), and 3 had no evidence of TB or LTBI. The median period of diagnosis after the exposure to active pulmonary TB was 2 years in patients with household contacts and 0.23 years in patients with non-household contacts. CONCLUSION: This study suggested that if the contact investigation conducted properly, it would be helpful for early diagnosis and prevention of pulmonary TB.

8.A Study of the Body Weight Control and Dietary Habits According to the Obese Index in Male Middle School Students.
Korean Journal of Community Nutrition 2006;11(6):683-694
The purpose of this study was to determine the body weight control, food habits and nutrient intakes according to the obese index in male middle school students. This study was carried out through questionnaires and measurement by body fat analyzer (Inbody 4.0). The subjects were 275 male middle school students in Iksan, Chonbuk province. The average age, height, weight, and BMI of the subjects were 14.4 years old, 167.8 cm, 60.2 kg and 21.3 kg/m2, respectively. Seventeen point one percent of the subjects were the underweight group, 47.6% were the normalweight group, and 35.3% were the overweight group by the classification of the Korean Pediatrics Society standard. Body fat of underweight, normalweight, and overweight were 16.1%, 19.0%, and 26.6%, respectively. Thirty one point nine percent of underweight, 39.7% of normalweight, and 31.9% of overweight had misperceptions of their weight (p<0.001). Sixty two point two percent of the males were dissatisfied with their body weight, and 55.3% of the whole tried to reduce their body weights. Even though they were normalweight, half of them dissatisfied with their weight. The source of weight control method was friends and family, TV.radio, Internet, and school nutrition education, in order. The subjects exercised 3.4 days per week, 70.2 minutes per day, but it was not different significantly by the obese index. Forty percent of the subjects had meals fast, 58.5% of them have biased food habits even if they didn't differ by the obese index. Activity rate was different by the obese index significantly (p<0.05), the number of severe activity was most in underweight. In conclusion, nutrition education programs should contain the necessity of normalweight, and regularity of life habits and activities for energy expenditure in overweight students. It made them to recognize their weight correctly, establish healthy body images, and raise the ability to promote health and improve nutritional status.

10.Effects of Family Support and Quality of Life in Relation to Smoking Cessation in Male Patient with Coronary Artery Disease.
Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 2008;15(1):71-79
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of family support and quality of life on smoking cessation in patients with coronary artery disease. METHOD: Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire included smoking history, family support and quality of life (QOL). The participants were 159 male patient with coronary artery disease who were current smokers or ex-smokers. A logistic model was developed to estimate the likelihood of current smoker or ex-smoker. RESULTS: Of the participants, 28.3% were current smokers and 71.7% were ex-smokers. The mean score for family support was 27.41 for positive support and 23.11 for negative support. The mean score for QOL was 50.48. There were significant differences in QOL according to smoking status. The predictors of smoking cessation were social interaction QOL and self-control QOL, and duration of smoking. The model correctly classified 89.5% of ex-smokers and 44.4% of current smokers and the correct classification for the total was 76.8%. CONCLUSION: Social interaction QOL, self-control QOL and duration of smoking were significant variables in prediction of smoking cessation. QOL should be considered in developing smoking cessation interventions. It is advisable to also examine the mediating effect of family support on quality of life.
