1.Well-Differentiated Papillary Mesothelioma of the Peritoneum: Report of a case.

We described a case of well differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) of the peritoneum in a 68-year-old man because of its rarity. It was incidentally found during operation for renal cell carcinoma. Grossly, the tumor appeared as multiple small granules or nodules on the entire peritoneal surface, including serosa of the intestine, omentum and mesentery. Microscopically, characteristic features are papillary, tubulopapillary or solid architecture lined by single layer of uniform, cytologically bland, cuboidal or polygonal mesothelial cells. The tumor cells were positive for EMA, cytokeratin and vimentin, but negative for CEA on immunohistochemical staining. Ultrastructural study showed characteristic long slender microvilli on the surface and intercellular junctions.

4.Alterations of Insulin-like Growth Factor-I mRNA and IGF Binding Protein-5 mRNA Expression Following Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury in Immature Rat.

PURPOSE:Insulin-like growth factor-I(IGF-I) is an essential anabolic factor for postnatal rat brain development and IGF-I expression is highly abundant during the first 21 days, critical growth period. Hypoxic-ischemic brain insults occurring during the perinatal period result in neuronal necrosis and permanent brain damage. To investigate the regulation of the action of IGF-I in response to such a hypoxic insult, we examined the gene expression of IGF-I and IGFBP-5 during the first 72 hr after hypoxic-ischemic injury in immature rat brain. METHODS:Ligation of the right carotid artery of 7-day-old rats was followed by 2 hour exposure to 8% oxygen to produce severe hypoxic brain damage. Using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR), the expression of IGF-I mRNA and IGFBP-5 mRNA was determined in both hypoxic and control brains at post 1, 4, 12, 24, 48 hr and 72 hr after hypoxic-ischemic insult. RESULTS:The IGF-I mRNA and IGFBP-5 mRNA expression of hypoxic brain were not different from those of controls at 1 hr of recovery but IGF-I mRNA expression was decreased rapidly at post 4 hr, this decrease more pronounced at 12 hr of recovery. IGF-I mRNA and IGFBP-5 mRNA expression were increased at 48 hr and 24 hr of recovery, respectively and both IGF-I mRNA and IGFBP-5 mRNA expression showed similar level of controls at 72 hr of recovery. CONCLUSION: Out findings suggest that IGF-I play a important role in both neuronal loss and repair process following hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and IGFBP-5 is also strongly involved in the repair of damaged brain tissue by mediating IGF-I action. 5.A Study on the Relationship among Family Functioning, Empathy, and Aggression by High School Students.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among family functioning, empathy and aggression by high school students. METHODS: This was a descriptive study. The survey participants were 467 high school students from M city. Data were collected from November 29 to December 7, 2012 and self-report questionnaires including a Family Adaptability Cohesion Evaluation Scale, Interpersonal Reactivity Indexes, and an Aggression Questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-test, ANOVA, stepwise multiple regression. RESULTS: The majority of the subjects were 2nd graders (42.0%) and female (57.2%). 59.7% of the subjects had religion, 84.8% were living together with parents. The mean ages of their fathers and mothers were 49.90+/-0.20 and 46.85+/-0.19 respectively. Aggression was found to have a statistically negative correlation with family functioning and empathy. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of aggression was empathic concern. Empathic concern, family cohesiveness, perspective taking, personal distress and gender accounted for 16.7% of the variances. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to provide aggressiveness reduction programs for high school students that consider their family functioning and empathy.

8.Transcription factors in the maintenance and survival of primordial follicles.

Primordial follicles are formed prenatally in mammalian ovaries, and at birth they are fated to be activated to primary follicles, to be dormant, or to die. During the early stage of folliclulogenesis, the oocyte undergoes dynamic alterations in expression of numerous genes, which are regulated by transcription factors. Several germ-cell specific transcriptional regulators are critical for formation and maintenance of follicles. These transcriptional regulators include: Figla, Lhx8, Nobox, Sohlh1, and Sohlh2. A subset of these transcriptional regulators is mutated in women with ovarian insufficiency and infertility. Establishment of this oocyte pool is essential for fertility. This review focuses on these transcriptional regulators of female primordial follicles.

9.Clinical values of CT and dynamic CT in brain infarction

With the advent of faster scan time and new computer program, a scanning technique called “dynamic computedtomography” has become possible. Dynamic CT consists of performing multiple rappid sequence scans after injectionof contrast material. The authors have evaluated the clinical usefulness of CT and dynamic CT of 93 patients withbrain infarction and/or ischemia during the period of 17 months from April 1983 to Aug. 1983 to Aug. 1984 inDepartment of Radiology, Chonbuk National University Hospital. The results were as follows; 1. The agedistribution ranged from 18 years to 78 years. Among them the most common age group was between 50 years and 59years(40.9%). 2. The sites of brain infarction were cerebral lobes(63 cases,68), basal ganglia(15 cases, 16.1%)and mlultiple sites(6 cases, 6.4%). The common affected site was middle cerebral artery territories. 3. Thecontrast enhancement of acute infarction was noted in 14 cases(17.5%) which occured commonly between 3 days and 2weeks from ictus. 4. The patterns of time-density curve in brain infarction and/or ischemia were as follow: a .Depression of slow wash-in phase was 20 cases(59%). b. Lower peak concentration was 17 cases(50%), c. Lower anddelayed peak concentration was 7 cases(21%), d. No definite peak concentration was 6 cases(18%). First threepatterns of time-density curve were thought as relatively characteristic curve of brain infarction and/orischemia. 5. Two cases that showed negative findings on precontrast CT scan appeared to be positive findings ashypodensity on postcontrast CT scan and were confirmed as brain infarction by dynamic CT. 6. The diagnostic entityof dynamic CT scan were as follows: a. large artery thrombotic infarction were 23 cases (58%). b. lacunarinfarction were 6 cases (15%). c. ischemia were 5 cases (13%), d. normal were 5 cases(13%), In six cases oflacunar infarction which was doubtful hypodensity on pre-and postcontrast CT scan had a marked difference in CT#(HU) on absolute scale graph of dynamic CT, so diagnosis of lacunar infarction could be made easily. 7. Theclinical values of dynamic CT consist in not only diagnosis of lacunar infarction but also evaluation ofeffectiveness of medical or surgical treatment.

10.Surgical Treatment of Cancer of the Orbit with Lymph Node Metastasis of Parotid Gland.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Malignant orbital tumors represent a diverse group of neoplasms such as malignant salivary tumors, squamous cell carcinoma, sarcoma, melanoma etc. A number of orbital tumors have a potential for lymphatic metastasis, but only a little information about the lymphatic drainage and treatment for malignant orbital tumors has been published. The purpose of this study was to review lymphatic spread of malignant orbital tumors and its surgical treatment of orbital cancer when metastasized to the parotid gland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five orbital cancer patients with lymph node metastasis of parotid gland were evaluated retrospectively. They had been treated by resection of primary tumor, parotidectomy, neck dissection and postoperative radiotherapy (except one case) from 1994 to 2000. Histopathology revealed squamous cell carcinoma in three patients, malignant melanoma in one and rhabdomyosarcoma in one. RESULTS: There were no complications postoperatively. Four cases had metastasis to intraglandular lymph nodes in the parotid gland and only one case had metastasis to preauricular lymph node. Two cases had metastasis to preglandular lymph nodes and prevascular lymph nodes in the level I lymph node. Three were NED (no evidence of disease), rhabdomyosarcoma case was DOD (died of disease) due to recurrence in submental area and breast and malignant melanoma case was AWD (alive with disease). CONCLUSION: Most orbital cancers with lymph nodes of the parotid gland have metastasis to intraglandular lymph nodes, but some of them does to extraglandular lymph nodes also. The examination of the parotid gland and the cervical lymph node must be considered in orbital cancers that have a potential for lymphatic metastasis. The results of this study indicates the need to include deep lobe and extraglandular lymph node of parotid gland for surgical removal of disease.
