PURPOSE: This study was conducted to identify correlations in hospital nurses' work environment, emotional labor and happiness index to provide basic resources for nurses' happiness at work. METHODS: Resources were gathered from 291 nurses who agreed to participate. Random sampling of nurses in nine hospitals in G-do was done between July 15 and August 14, 2014. Data were analyzed using chi2 tests, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple hierarchical regression with SPSS/WIN 18.0. RESULTS: Mean scores (scale of 5) were nurses' work environment, 2.81, emotional labor, 3.24, and happiness index, 2.94. There were significant differences on the happiness index for: age, marriage, children, clinical experience, position, payment, and future work plans and a negative correlation between work environment and emotional labor, emotional labor and happiness index but a positive correlation between happiness index and work environment. Happiness index was influenced by work environment, emotional labor, future work plans. Explanatory power of these variables was 26%. CONCLUSION: Based on the findings of this study, so it is necessary to improve the work environment and reduce the frequency of emotional labor in order to increase the happiness index of hospital nurses.

Purpose: This study aimed to understand and explore the work experiences of Generation Y nurses in hospital organizations. Methods: Participants were nine nurses with generation Y working in the hospital. Data were collected through individual interviews from December 2, 2022 to June 30, 2023. The transcripts were coded and analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. Results: A total of 33 formulated meanings were derived from the meaningful 50 statements of nine study participants, and then categorized them into 12 themes with a collection of five theme clusters. Conclusion This study found that Generation Y nurses experienced role confusion and physical and mental burden as they caught in the middle in other generations. Even they were wondering whether to continue working as a nurse, which seems that it is crucial to establish a recognition and compensation system to maintain Generation Y nurses in the field. In addition, Generation Y nurses have been found to endure difficult hospital work and demonstrate patience even when working alone, while also deriving strength from their colleagues. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a program for intergenerational harmony among nurses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cisplatin (CP), an antitumor agent widely used in the treatment of head and neck cancers, has side effects such as ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. These side effects are closely related to oxidative stress. In the present study, we attempted to suppress CP-induced ototoxicity in rats by administering melatonin, an antioxidant. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into different groups and were treated as follows: 1) saline control, 2) CP (16 mg/kg, i.p.), 3) CP plus melatonin (10 mg/kg, i.p.). The rats were sacrificed at the 6th day after CP treatment. RESULTS: CP-treated rats showed increase in cochlear malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase levels, and the decrease in cochlear superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase levels. CP-treated rats showed markedly decreased in the number of stereocilia on the inner hair cells and mildly decreased in the number of outer hair cells in organ of Corti under the light and scanning electron microscopic examination. Light and electron microscopic findings, and cochlear hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, SOD, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase levels were restored in the rats injected with CP plus melatonin than those with CP alone. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that melatonin suppresses CP-induced ototoxicity via the suppression of the increased production of reactive oxygen species.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the experimental brush wear pattern of a light cured surface sealant, Biscover (Bisco, Schaumburg, IL), and to evaluate its cariostatic effect. METHODS: Caries- free human premolars were used for the Biscover coating group (n = 90) and the control group (n = 10). The Biscover coating group was randomly assigned to nine subgroups of 10 each and the control group was assigned to two subgroups of 5 each according to the number of brushing strokes. An experimental 3-body wear test was conducted under different strokes of wear test. Tooth-brushing was accomplished with movement of each brush head set at a frequency of 100 rpm under a force of 1.5 N. Surface roughness was tested before, and after Biscover coating, and after brushing. Then, each of the 10 teeth of both groups were placed in artificial caries inducing solution for 7 days. All tooth surfaces were assessed using scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: Biscover coated surfaces showed a smoother texture than enamel surfaces. The roughness was increased after experimental brushing and after 10,800 brushing strokes, the whole layer of Biscover wore out. However, teeth in the Biscover coating group had a cariostatic effect in cariogenic conditions. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that white lesions in orthodontic patients can be suppressed by topical applications of Biscover.

Functional paraganglioma of the mediastinum is an uncommon tumor of the paraganglion system that causes symptoms and signs of episodic catecholamine release. It has not been reported in Korea. We experienced a case of a 17 years old man with a history of diaphoresis and paroxysmal hypertension refractory to therapy since 14 years old. Urinary execretion of catecholamine and its metabolites were elevated. Computed tomography(CT) scan revealed high density mass located on the posterior mediastinum in the area of the right fifth intercostal space. At thoracotomy, a 3X3X4cm sized lesion was resected and confirmed as a paraganglioma.

PURPOSE: this study was intended to search the relationship between perception of the infant temperament in mother of infant at the age of 1~12 months and maternal confidence and satisfaction in performing maternal role, and to submit a basic data to establish a nursing intervention program which is helpful for determination of infant development and performing maternal role promotion by identify variables associated with infant temperament. METHOD: The subjects of this study were 300 mothers of infant at the age of 1~12 months who visited well baby clinic in 4 hospitals in Busan city and Kyoung-Nam province. Final analysis was performed in 293 cases. Seven cases was excluded in this study because of its inappropriate data collection. The data was collected from 1st July to 15th August 2002. The questionaries which were fill-up by mother were collected. Infant temperament was measured by using the tool of "what my baby is like"(WBL) which was developed by Priham et. al.(1994) and translated by Bang(1999). The scale of postpartum self evaluation which was developed by Lederman et al(1981) and translated by Lee(1992) was used for the confidence and satisfaction of maternal role. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS-PC for window, version 10.0: frequency, percentage, minimum, maximum, mean, SD, t-test, ANOVA, Post-hoc test(Scheffe's test), Pearson Correlation Coefficients. RESULT: The mean score of maternal perception of the infant temperament was 6.17 +/-1.04, and mother recognized her infant as positive. The mean score of confidence of maternal role was 2.89+/-.41 and this revealed in an average level. The mean score of satisfaction of maternal role was 3.29+/-.51 and this revealed in a higher level. There was a weak significant positive correlation between the score of maternal perception of infant temperament and confidence of maternal role(r=0.176, P= .003), but there was no significant correlation between satisfaction of maternal role(P > .05). It revealed the more maternal perception of the infant temperament as positive, the higher confidence of maternal role. There was a moderate significant positive correlation between confidence of maternal role and satisfaction of maternal role(r=0.410, P= .000). It revealed the more confidence of maternal role, the higher satisfaction of maternal role. The variables related with the score of maternal perception of infant temperament were the type of delivery (t=-2.600, P= .010), experience of learning baby care(t=2.382, P= .018), maternal perception on baby's health status(F=3.467, P= .033), maternal perception on her health status(F=3.467, P= .027), baby's age(F=3.080, P= .028). CONCLUSION: Our result showed the confidence of maternal role was increased as the maternal perception of infant temperament was positive, and conformed that the confidence of maternal role was also related with satisfaction of maternal role. Prenatal education, type of delivery, baby's age were also related with the maternal perception of infant temperament. So, nursing intervention program of developmental stage maybe necessary in order to help maternal perception of infant temperament as positive, and it will be increased the confidence of maternal role and satisfaction of performing maternal role which was considered as real indicate of achievement of maternal role.

A prominent crista terminalis is a normal anatomic variant which consist of thick muscular bridge within the right atrium. However, it could be often misdiagnosed with an abnormal mass on the transthoracic echocardiography. The case report presented here, describe the findings of transthoracic echocardiography that suggested a right atrial mass in patients with pulmonary embolism. However, subsequent transesophageal echocardiography and cardiac computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging differentiated a true right atrial mass from a prominent crista terminalis.

BACKGROUND: Cisplatin (CP), an antitumor agent widely used in the treatment of cancers, has nephrotoxicity. This side effect is closely related to oxidative stress. In the present study, we attempted to reduce CP-induced nephrotoxicity in rats by administering melatonin, an antioxidant. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into different groups and were treated as follows: (1) saline control; (2) CP (16 mg/kg, i.p.); (3) CP plus melatonin (10 mg/kg, i.p.). The rats were sacrificed at the 6th day after CP treatment. To evaluate renal damage, BUN, serum creatinine, creatinine clearance and microscopic examination were done. Hydrogen peroxide which is one of the oxygen free radicals, and malondialdehyde which is known as a marker of the oxygen free radical mediated injury, and the activities of the antioxidant enzymes such as superoxied dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase were also measured. RESULTS: CP-treated rats showed the increase of BUN, serum creatinine, malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in kidney. And CP-treated rats also showed the decrease of creatinine clearance and catalase levels. CP-treated rats showed severe tubular necrosis in proximal convoluted tubules under the light microscopic examination. The light microscopic finding and all of the parameters except SOD were restored in the rats injected with CP plus melatonin than those with CP alone. SOD level was higher in the rats injected with CP plus melatonin than that with CP alone. CONCIUSION: These results suggest that melatonin suppresses CP-induced nephrotoxicity by suppressing the production of reactive oxygen species via the activation of SOD and catalase.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Temporary soft relining materials are used in a diverse clinical situations such as tissue conditioner, relining material, functional impression by varying its viscoelasticity. However, reproduction of consistent viscoelasticity has been not possible. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Considering setting mechanism of this material, this study has measured the effect of varying amount of void in dynamic viscoelasticity of soft relining material, with three different mixing methods. In each methods 10 specimens were made and subjected to dynamic viscoelastic test which were measured at specific times over period of 72 hours. RESULTS: The analysis of the result shown that there was no statistically significant differences between different mixing methods. CONCLUSION: Different mixing methods had no effect over control of viscoelasticity of soft lining material. Further research is recommended for under similar oral environmental condition.

STUDY DESIGN: Case Report. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to report 2 cases of calcified spinal meningioma that displayed differences in appearance during resection, and to review the current literature on calcified and ossified spinal meningiomas. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: Calcified and ossified spinal meningiomas are rare, and tumor calcification is a risk factor for poor neurological outcomes resulting from the additional manipulations required to dissect the tumor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We describe the clinical course and intraoperative findings of 2 female patients who presented with symptoms of myelopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging showed calcified spinal meningiomas of the thoracic spine. The type of tumor resection performed was dependent on the solidity and texture of the individual tumors. RESULTS: Pathologic evaluation revealed psammoma bodies, which suggested calcified meningioma. The patients' neurologic symptoms resolved with no neurologic sequelae. CONCLUSIONS: Although there are a few pathologic differences regarding the main type and pathogenesis of ossified and calcified meningioma, both are thought to have a poor prognosis. For these tumors, adequately accounting for the expected poor prognosis and performing a wide laminectomy in order to ensure an adequate surgical margin are important factors for achieving a favorable outcome.
