Aplasia cutis congenita represents a congenital absence of all skin layers, and it may occasionally extend through the bone and dura of the skull. Since the first report was described in the extremity by Cordon 1767, and Campbell 1826, approximately over 500 cases have been reported. About eighty five percents of all cases are found in the scalp, with 15 to 30 percents involving the skull as well. Fifteen percents of all cases involve nonscalp locations and are often bilateral symmetrical. It has been relatively rarely reported disorder abroad as well as domestically. It has several clinical subtypes classified by the location and pattern of skin absence, the presence of associated malformation and the mode of inheritance with unknown cause. We had a new born female infant with this disorder, who presented with a full thickness skin defect on scalp and skull defect. No skin defect were reported in other family members, including a first child born several years previously. Chromosomal analysis revealed as normal female karyotype, but she had double pelvis and double ureter of both kidney The legions healed for five weeks by conservative treatment as moist wound dressing and systemic antibiotic administrations. As a relatively uncommon skin anomaly with congenital anomaly, one case of aplasia cutis congenita involving scalp and skull is reported with the review of reference.

BACKGROUND: Leukocytes, both polymorphonuclear leukocytes(PMNL) and monocytes/macrophages have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the cerebral ischemia and stroke. Neutrophils accumulate in post-hypoxic-ischemic neonatal rat brain prior to the evolution of necrosis and neutrophil depletion attenuates hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. However, the mechanisms leading to post-hypoxic-ischemic neutrophil accumulation are unknown yet. We hypothesized that Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 might mediate post-hypoxic-ischemic injury in the immature brain; thus, we evaluated ICAM-1 gene expression in post-hypoxic-ischemic neonatal(postnatal day 7) rat brain. METHODS: Neonatal rats(n=36) underwent right carotid ligation followed by exposure in 8% O2 for 2.5 hours; this procedure typically produces ipsilateral striatal, hippocampal and cortical infarction. Control groups are included by carotid ligation alone, hypoxia alone, and neither hypoxia nor ligation. For RNA extraction, rats were killed 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 h post- hypoxia-ischemia and RT-PCR was carried out. RESULTS: ICAM-1 mRNA was barely detected in the controls including normal and sham operated animals. In the cortex, striatum and hippocampus, ICAM-1 mRNA was significantly induced in the ipsilateral(right) side compared to the contralateral(left) side just after hypoxia-ischemia. The elevated ICAM-1 mRNA gradually reached a peak at 4 or 8 h and then decreased to an almost basal level by 24 to 48 h. In contrast, the less pronounced contralateral(left-sided) ICAM-1 mRNA expression appeared to peak earlier, within 2 h post-hypoxia-ischemia. CONCLUSION: The temporal profiles of post-hypoxic-ischemic ICAM-1 mRNA expression are consistent with a role in post-hypoxic-ischemic neutrophil recruitment and in the evolution of subsequent brain injury.

Recently, the bcl-2 and p53 protein have been recognized as important factors that is contributed to programmed cell death. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of bcl-2 and p53 protein expression in uterine cervical carcinoma. The expression of bcl-2 and p53 in 59 cases of uterine cervical carcinoma (stage IB to IIB) were surgically treated from January 1993 to June 1994. The expression of bcl-2 and p53 was examined by immunohistochemical method using formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue specimens. The 48 cases were squamous cell carcinoma and 11 cases were adenocarcinoma. The results were as follows: 1. The expression rate of bcl-2 protein was 28.8%(17/59) and there was no significant correlaltion between the expression of bcl-2 protein and the clinicopathologic parameters (histologic type, grade, FIGO stage, cervical invasion depth, lymph node metastasis, parametrial invasion, tumor size, neoadjuvant chemotherapy response, recurrence, survival). 2. The expression rate of p53 protein was 32.2%(19/59) and there was no significant correlation between expression of p53 protein and the clinicopathologic parameters. 3. There was significant correlation between and expression of bcl-2 and p53 protein (P 0.05). In conclusion, bcl-2 and p53 protein are thought to be possible factors in the carcinogenesis of uterine cervical carcinoma and correlate with progression of it. But further study will be required to clarify the role of bcl-2 and p53 in carcinogenesis of the uterine cervix.

To evaluate the effectiveness of conization in the diagnosis of cervical cancer, the histopathologic finding of 464 consecutive cases were analized with respect to the cytology, punch biopsy and hysterectomy. Cold knife conization was performed under direct visualization(naked eye conization) from January, 1987 to Octorber 1994 at department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kosin Medical Center. The results were summerized as follows : 1. The rate of agreement and underdiagnosis of between pap smear and naked eye conization were 43.7% and 47%. 2. The rate of agreement and underdiagnosis of between punch biopsy and naked eye conization were 64.5% and 21.8% 3. Subsequent hysterectomy was done on the 382 case and their incidence of residual disease rate was 44.2%(169 cases). Their incidence of residual lesion was increased with severity of the carcinomatous change. 4. The rate of complication undergoing conization was 8.4%(39 cases).

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to verify the effects of a memory and visual-motor integration program for older adults based on self-efficacy theory. METHODS: A non-equivalent control group pretest–posttest design was implemented in this quasi-experimental study. The participants were 62 older adults from senior centers and older adult welfare facilities in D and G city (Experimental group=30, Control group=32). The experimental group took part in a 12-session memory and visual-motor integration program over 6 weeks. Data regarding memory self-efficacy, memory, visual-motor integration, and depression were collected from July to October of 2014 and analyzed with independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U test using PASW Statistics (SPSS) 18.0 to determine the effects of the interventions. RESULTS: Memory self-efficacy (t=2.20, p=.031), memory (Z=-2.92, p=.004), and visual-motor integration (Z=-2.49, p=.013) increased significantly in the experimental group as compared to the control group. However, depression (Z=-0.90, p=.367) did not decrease significantly. CONCLUSION: This program is effective for increasing memory, visual-motor integration, and memory self-efficacy in older adults. Therefore, it can be used to improve cognition and prevent dementia in older adults.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the double mediating effect of effect of diversity sensitivity orientation and positive nursing organizational culture between diversity management and organizational commitment. Methods: Participants were 245 nurses working in six tertiary hospitals located in 3 different regions. Data collection was conducted from February 13, 2023 to March 6, 2023 through online self-reported questionnaire. The data were analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics 27 and SPSS PROCESS Macro 4.2 program. Results: The direct effect of diversity management on organizational commitment was significant (β = .21, p < .001). The indirect effect of diversity management on organization commitment was .34 (95% confidence interval [CI] = .23~.47). The double mediating effect of diversity sensitivityorientation and positive nursing organizational culture in the relationship between diversity management and organizational commitment was .02 (95% CI = .00~.05). Conclusion Diversity sensitivity orientation and positive nursing organizational culture show double mediating effect on the relationship between diversity management and organizational commitment. Education program and human resource management strategy for enhancing diversity management, diversity sensitivity orientation and positive nursing organizational culture should be provided to improve organizational commitment, and which are needed active support of the association and nursing organization.

Lipoma is a common tumor throughout the body, but occurrence in the deep neck space is very rare, and only some cases have been reported by otolaryngologist and pathologist for the last century. In head and neck area, as elsewhere, the lipoma is mainly originated from the subcutaneum. But in deeper tissues, its characteristics are different from those of other sites of lipoma. Submucosal lipoma in the head and neck area usually occur in oral cavity and hypopharynx. Recently we hae experienced 3 cases of deep neck space lipoma, so we report our clinical experiences with brief review of literature.

A study was to evaluate the efficacy and clinical utility of second look operation in the managements of malignant ovarian tumor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kosin medical colleage from January 1986 to September 1993. Of 220 patients diagnosed as ovarian cancer, 48 patients who had underwent primariy laparotomy were performed second look operation. Thirty-seven patients were found to have no evidence of disease. The result revealed that negative second look operation rate was noted 96.3% at stage I, 66.6% at stage II, 50.0% at stage III, and 42.9% at stage IV and total negative second look operation rate was 77.1%. The 2 year survival rate for stage I, II, III, IV were 85.2%, 66.6%, 50.0% and 42.9% respectively. The survival rate of negative second look operation was 86.5%, that of positive second look operation was 18.1%. In conclusion, second look operation in early stage ovarian cancer need to be justified.
