1.Oxygen Consumption at Different Treadmill Speed and Grade in Athletes and Nonathletes.

This study was aimed to elucidate the relationship between combinations of treadmill speed-grade and oxygen consumption(Vo2). Twenty athetic and 20 non-athletic male college students aged 19-24yr were employed to exercise on a treadmill using 4 speeds(4.02, 5.47, 6.76 and 8.05km/h) and 5 grades(0, 8, 12, 16 and 20%). A fixed speed was selected for each session with the grade increased every 3 min. The Vo2, heart rate, stride frequency and stride length were measured during the last min of each 3-min stage. Vo2increased linearly with increasing speed and grade showing significant multiple correlations in nonathletes(Vo2=3.64x+0.831y+0.031xy-7.03, R=0.98, P<0.01) and athletes(Vo2=3.48x+0.324y+0.112xy-5.74, R=0.99, P<0.01). Stride frequency and length tended to increase with increasing speed except for the transition from walking to runnig at 8.05Km/h at which the stride frequency ran up much higher with the stride length getting lower than at 6.76Km/h. Heart rate increased linearly with increasing Vo2. The rate of increase was higher during walking than during running. These results indicate that athletes have higher rate of increase in Vo2than nonathletes at near-maximal exercise and may be used as a guideline in predicting maximum oxygen comsumption and in prescribing exercise intensity.

3.A case of POEMS syndrome associated with amyloidosis.

POEMS syndrome (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal M protein, and skin lesion) is a rare multisystemic disease of unknown cause with varying clinical manifestations. Amyloidosis-associated POEMS Syndrome is also rare condition. We experienced a 63-year-old female who had been suffered from edema and tingling sensation of low extremities. She also had a marked demyelination, axonal degeneration and regeneration of the nerve, hypoaldosteronism, hyperprolactinemia, decreased sexual hormone, monoclonal gammopathy (IgG lambda type), skin change and ascites. The renal biopsy revealed homogenous mesangial widening with a few cell nuclei at the glomerular capillary, and it showed positive apple-green birefringence in Congo-red stain. It's the first report that shows the deposition of amyloid in patients with POEMS syndrome in Korea. Edema and M-spike were improved by use of prednisolone, melphalan, fludrocortisone and colchicine.

4.Distractive Atlantoaixial Dislocation.

Atlantoaxial dislocations usually present with fatal brain injury, but rarely with clinical problems. With the development of newer imaging techniques, as well as improved preoperative and perioperative care, the likelihood of survival from an atlantoaxial dislocation has increased. Survivors usually suffer incomplete neurological deficits, including Brown-Sequard syndrome or central cord syndrome. The authors describe a distractive atlantoaxial dislocation, with neurological sequelae, in a younger patient who had been involved in a car accident. This case was treated surgically, but the patient suffered paraplegia due to thoracic myelopathy.

5.Status of intestinal parasite infections among children in Bat Dambang, Cambodia.

A survey was conducted to determine the extent of intestinal parasite infection in Bat Dambang, Cambodia in March 2004. A total of 623 fecal specimens was collected from kindergarten and schoolchildren and examined using the formalin-ether sedimentation technique. The overall infection rate of intestinal parasites was 25.7% (boys, 26.2%; girls, 25.1%), and the infection rates of intestinal helminthes by species were as follows: Echinostoma sp. 4.8%, hookworm 3.4%, Hymenolepis nana 1.3%, and Rhabditis sp. 1.3%. The infection rates of intestinal protozoa were; Entamoeba coli 4.8%, Giardia lamblia 2.9%, Iodamoeba butschlii 1.4%, Entamoeba polecki 1.1%, and Entamoeba histolytica 0.8%. There were no egg positive cases of Ascaris lumbricoides or Trichuris trichiura. All children infected were treated with albendazole, praziquantel, or metronidazole according to parasite species. The results showed that intestinal parasites are highly endemic in Bat Dambang, Cambodia.

6.Induced Life-Threatening Electrolyte Imbalance in Sub-clinical Hyperthyroidism -A case report-.

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is rare in white Caucasian but a few in Asian. A 36-year-old man presented with suddenly developed paraparesis was brought by ambulance. He got some medications and injection for the upper respiratory infection in the morning of admission day. On admission he revealed bilateral proximal muscle weakness without pain. He didn't have any specific medical history of himself and his family. The laboratory results on admission revealed severe hypokalemia (2.1 mM/l). Potassium replacement was immediately started and his symptom was gone. We found TSH was extremely decreased (<0.005 microIU/ml) but T3 and T4 were within normal level. We guess TPP was induced by some drugs to the patient with sub-clinical hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is not always clinically apparent and then may be easily missed. However just a single medication or injection that is usually prescribed can induce critical progressive hypokalemia.

Methyl anthranilate (MA) is a botanical fragrance used in food flavoring with unexplored potential in anti-pigment cosmetics. MA dose-dependently reduced melanin content without affecting cell viability, inhibited dendrite elongation and melanosome transfer in the co-culture system of human melanoma cells (MNT-1) and human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT), and downregulated melanogenic genes, including tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein 1 and 2 (TRP-1, TRP-2). Additionally, MA decreased cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) production and exhibited a significant anti-pigmentary effect in Melanoderm™. These results suggest that MA is a promising anti-pigmentary agent for replacing or complementing existing anti-pigmentary cosmetics.

10.TiO2 nanotube stimulate chondrogenic differentiation of limb mesenchymal cells by modulating focal activity.

Vertically aligned, laterally spaced nanoscale titanium nanotubes were grown on a titanium surface by anodization, and the growth of chondroprogenitors on the resulting surfaces was investigated. Surfaces bearing nanotubes of 70 to 100 nm in diameter were found to trigger the morphological transition to a cortical actin pattern and rounded cell shape (both indicative of chondrocytic differentiation), as well as the up-regulation of type II collagen and integrin beta4 protein expression through the down-regulation of Erk activity. Inhibition of Erk signaling reduced stress fiber formation and induced the transition to the cortical actin pattern in cells cultured on 30-nm-diameter nanotubes, which maintained their fibroblastoid morphologies in the absence of Erk inhibition. Collectively, these results indicate that a titanium-based nanotube surface can support chondrocytic functions among chondroprogenitors, and may therefore be useful for future cartilaginous applications.
