1.The Relationship Between Social Capital, the Happiness of Others, and the Happiness of Korean Adults: A National Sample Study
Psychiatry Investigation 2022;19(11):958-964
Objective:
This study aimed to reveal the relationship between social capital, the happiness of others, and the happiness of Korean adults.
Methods:
Data from 4,890 participants (2,092 males [42.78%] and 2,798 females [57.22%]) aged 19 to 79 years were used. Data used in the analysis were provided by the Survey on Koreans’ Happiness and Quality of Life (2019) conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs.
Results:
First, age, education, marital status, and subjective economic level were found to be significantly related to individual happiness. Second, social capital, which including trust and social participation, was positively related to individual happiness. Third, the key result of this study was that the happiness of close people was positively associated with individual happiness. Fourth, belonging showed a significant moderating effect on the relationship between the happiness of others and individual happiness.
Conclusion
This study contributes by examining the relationship between the happiness of others and individual happiness after controlling for social capital and demographic variables and examining the moderating effect of social capital on the relationship between the happiness of self and others. These results are expected to help understand the factors that determine the happiness of Korean adults.

Journal of Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing 2019;30(3):324-335
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to understand nursing college life experiences of North Korean Defectors and identify their meanings. METHODS: The study collected data through individual in-depth interviews among six undergraduates or graduates from nursing colleges, using phenomenological research methodology of Colaizzi-one of qualitative research approaches. RESULTS: Six categories drawn as a result of research include ‘Be bumped against hard reality wall’, ‘Bondage of discrimination and prejudice’, ‘Endure and stand with strength of faith’, ‘Myself grown up along with work’, ‘Becoming one amid differences’, and ‘Stepping towards unification’. CONCLUSION: The result of this study would contribute to understanding academic and interpersonal difficulties North Korean defectors might experience at nursing colleges. And it may also help people to learn that they would play an important role in integration of the nursing fields of South and North Korea as well as the nation's unification. Along the way, the results of the study could be basic data to establish national policy helping North Korean defectors adapt to nursing college life, and develop the supporting system of colleges as well as setting up appropriate supports and measures from the perspective of the nursing field.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recently published, evidence-based guidelines should alter the management of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)/motor neuron disease (MND). However, the newest recommendations for ALS/MND therapy are not reflected in actual clinical practice. We sought to evaluate the current status of the diagnosis and management of ALS in Korea. METHODS: The Korean ALS/MND research group was organized in 2010, involving more than 50 neurologists from neuromuscular centers in Korea. Participating centers collected data from April to September 2010 on the diagnosis and management of patients with ALS. Data forms from the ALS patient care database, which is a component of the ALS clinical assessment, research, and education program (http://www.outcomes-umassmed.org/ALS/), were modified and used for data collection. RESULTS: In total, 373 sporadic ALS cases from 35 centers were enrolled. The demographic features and clinical findings were similar to those in previous reports from other countries. The mean age at onset was 50-60 years, and a slight male predominance was observed. The enrolled patients predominantly showed focal onset of cervical or lumbosacral symptoms. Only about one-half of the indicated patients (31.4%) received a physician's recommendation for a parenteral gastrostomy, and 18.1% underwent the procedure. Noninvasive ventilation was recommended in 23% of patients, but applied in only 9.5% of them. Tracheostomy was performed in 12.7% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: The demographic and clinical features of the diagnosis and management of ALS in Korea are similar to those reported in other countries; however, supportive management, as recommended in evidence-based guidelines, are not yet widely recommended or performed for patients with ALS in Korea.

Postoperative emesis is still a troublesome problem in patients undergoing general anesthesia. We compared the efficacy and safety of ondansetron, a selective antagonist of serotonin 5HT3 receptors, within the 24hours postoperative period. Forty patients between the ages of 12 and 75 and ASA class I-III, having general anesthesia, undergoing elective abdominal surgery (except gynecologic surgery) were assigned to one of two treatment groups according to uncontrolled parallel comparative study design. A standard anesthetic technique consisting of thiopental-atracurium for induction and N2O-Enflurane for maintenance of anesthesia was used. The data showed that intravenous ondansetron 4mg i.v. before induction was significantly more effective in preventing emesis (n=20, 85%) than placebo (n=20, 60%). Nausea severity scores were also significantly decreased from 1.5+/-0.6 (mean+/-SE) in placebo group to 0.30.1 in ondansetron group (p<0.05). All patients receiving of ondansetron 4mg intravenously tolerated their treatment well, without any special adverse events. Conclusion; Ondansetron(4mg) given intravenously before induction to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery was effective and safe.

Journal of the Korean Pediatric Society 2000;43(11):1451-1457
PURPOSE: Total anomalous venous return(TAPVR) is associated in more than 60Yo of patients with right isomerism and can significantly complicate the management of single ventricle patients at any stage of management. We studied the results of management and sought to determine factors that may influence survival in patients with TAPVR in right atrial isomerism. METHODS: Between February 1991 and July 1999, 14 patients with TAPVR in right atrial isomerism underwent operations,' we reviewed our experience after performing single ventricle palliation RESULTS: Seven patients were of the obstructive type TAPVR and seven patients were of the non-obstructive type TAPVR. The mean age at operation was 17 months and mean body weight at operation was 7.3kg. Direct surgical repair for the pulmonary vein was performed in seven patients and in the others, TAPVR could be satisfactorily managed by the use of bilateral cavopulrnonary anastomosis(BCPS) to exclude the distal superior vena cava(SVC). At a mean follow-up of 27 months, there were five deaths, arid pulrnonary vein restenosis developed in four patients in the direct surgical repair group. In the other group, there was neither mortality nor morbidity. Also, the presence of pulmonary venous obstruction was associated with high mortality. CONCLUSION: According to our study, TAPVR can be satisfactorily managed by the use of BCPS to exclude the distal SVC in the non-obstructive type. But further evaluation of surgical methods about other types of TAPVR are warranted, because TAPVR not requiring intervention includes any low supracardiac and some mixed types.

Korean Journal of Cerebrovascular Surgery 2010;12(1):13-18
Simultaneous occurrence of remote intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and intracranial aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage is very rare. We report on a case of concurrent hypertensive ICH at the left thalamus and rupture of an intracranial aneurysm at the bifurcation of the single A2 segment of the anterior cerebral artery in a 64-year-old woman, which was clipped previously, with review of the literature. To our knowledge, this is the first case report demonstrating bleeding of previously clipped aneurysm with simultaneous hypertensive ICH. Hypertensive crisis following ICH seems to have provoked rupture of the residual aneurysm.

Korean Circulation Journal 1991;21(1):40-46
Exercise-induced ischemic ST responses were analyzed in 36 patients who presented with chest pain and had exercise test and the results were compared with their coronary angiographic findings. Among 36 exercise test positives, the incidences of one-, two- and three vessel disease, and left main disease were 25%(9 cases), 30%(11 cases), 25%(9 cases) and 9%(3 cases), respectively. The incidence of multivessel disease(i.e., two-to three vessel disease or left main disease) in patients with ST depression > or =2.0mm was 72% and that in those with ST depression of 1.0-1.9mm was 45%. In patients with downsloping ST depression, the incidence of multivessel disease was significantly higher than that of one vessel disease(86% vs 14%, p<0.001). But both incidences of one vessel disease and multivessel disease were similar in patients with flat and slowly upsloping ST depression. More than two thirds of patients with ischemic ST depression appearing in the first 6 minutes of exercise or those lasting past 7 minutes in recovery were associated with multivessel disease. It is concluded that attention to depth, type, appearance time and duration of ST depression during exercise test is particularly helpful in detecting patients with advanced coronary disease.
