PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to define the relationships between job stress, professional self-concept, and job satisfaction among nurses in rehabilitation units and to identify factors that influence job satisfaction. METHODS: This study surveyed 240 nurses working at the rehabilitation units of 10 hospitals located in G City. To collect the data, nurses' job stress, the professional self-concept of nurses instrument (PSCNI), and the Korean-Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (K-MSQ) were used. The data were analyzed through t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. RESULTS: The scores for job stress, professional self-concept, and job satisfaction were 3.34+/-0.61, 72.36+/-8.64 and 3.17+/-0.39, respectively. Job satisfaction and job stress showed a low-level negative correlation with statistical significance (r=-.13, p=.042), whereas a medium-level positive correlation was found between job satisfaction and professional self-concept (r=.46, p<.001). Job stress, professional self-concept, total career length and size of working hospital explained approximately 25.8% of job satisfaction (F=17.52, p<.001). CONCLUSION: Considering the results in this study, it is necessary to develop a practical educational program to establish positive professional self-concept for nurses in rehabilitation units. Such efforts must be supported by clinical nursing administrations through policies aimed at reducing job stress and increasing job satisfaction.

This study was designed to identify the relationship between perceived social support and discernd powerlessness held by the elderly residing in a rural community. The purpose of this study was to contribute to theoretical understanding of the relationship of these two variables and eventually to the more effective adaptation of the elderly to their situation. The subjects for this study were the 89 elderly residing in a rural community. Data were collected by a questionnaire from June 2 to 20, 1998. The data were analysed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlated coefficient and stepwise multiple regression using a SAS program. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The relationship between perceived social support and discernd powerlessness was significant(r = -.23502, p=.0266). Especially, discernd elderly's powerlessness shows a highly significant relationship with family and neighborhood support(family r= -.45096, p=.0001, neighborhood r= -.35681, p=.0006). In the support patterns, the discernd powerlessness of the elderly has a significant relationship to emotional, informational and evaluational support. Therefore the hypothesis that, "the lower the degree of social support peiceived by the elderly, the higher the degree of discened powerlessness" was supported. 2. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of discened powerlessness was family support in support system (R2 = .2034), and emotional support (R2 = .0627) in support patterns. 3. General characteristic related to the degree of social support was only residential status(P< .05), but the degree of family support was related to spouse(t=2.390. p<.01). residential status(t= -2.157, p<.05), and household.

NK/T cell lymphoma is a distinct clinicopathologic entity which is more prevalent in Asia than in America and Europe and is highly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Although the clinicopathologic features of the tumor have been clearly defined, genetic changes and roles of virus associated with the development and progression of tumor have not been well studied. In this study, we carried out polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for EBNA-3B, EBNA-3C, and LMP-1 30 bp deletion to investigate EBV subtype and variants in tumor tissue and performed comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) to screen chromosomal imbalances using frozen tissues from 7 patients with nasal-type NK/T cell lymphoma and 1 patient with blastic NK cell lymphoma. Of 6 cases infected with EBV, there were EBV type 1 in six, LMP-1 30 bp deletion variant in four, and LMP-1 40 bp deletion variant in one. Frequent chromosomal imbalances included deletions at 1p31-pter (4), 12q23-q24 (3), and 17p (4), and gains at 2q (5), 10q (3), and 13q34-qter (4). Blastic NK cell lymphoma displayed deletions of 9q, 7q, and 6q, similar to that of nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma. With these results, we assumed that candidate genes in these imbalanced chromosomal loci would provide the clue for further molecular studies to identify putative tumor suppressor genes or proto-oncogenes associated with pathogenesis of this neoplasm.

Kienbock's disease is a rare disease that is suspected to be caused by the circulatory impairment or/and trauma to the lunate. The various modes of etiology, progression and the treatment have been suggested without any definite ones. The authors report 13 cases of the Kienbock's disease and the results are as follows:1. The male(10 of 13 patients) and the dominate hand(10 of 13 hands) were the more prevalent. 2. Eight cases had a definite history of trauma and the 5 of them were injured by the hyperextension of the wrist. 3. Eight cases were stage III B according to the Lichtman's classification. 4. Nine cases(69%) showed ulna minus variant, which was thought to have certain significant relation with the cause of this disease.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate fatigue and its related factors in cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. METHOD: The subjects of this study consisted of 98 patients receiving radiotherapy. Subjects were recruited from C University Hospital radiation oncology unit located in Gwangju from March to May, 2001. Questionnaire and medical records were used for data collection. The obtained data was analyzed using SAS program that included descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Post-hoc test(Fisher's LSD) and Pearson's correlation coefficients. RESULT: The fatigue perceived by the subjects was middle level (5.59 +/- 1.59) and 72.4% of them reported greater than 5 points. The subjects in no religion, low income, and spouse caregiver groups experienced the higher fatigue than another groups, respectively. The subjects in nasopharyngeal cancer, head & neck radiation site, and analgesics medication groups did, experience fatigue as well. The fatigue not only positively correlated with symptom distress, disruption of usual activity, sleep dissatisfaction, and mood state, but also negatively with less family support. CONCLUSION: Cancer patients receiving radiotherapy experience the middle level of fatigue and it correlates with the multi-dimensional factors. However, further research is needed to identify the changes in fatigue over the radiotherapy period through longitudinal design and to develop nursing intervention for fatigue decrease.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify influencing factors on rehabilitation adherence in stroke patients. METHODS: This study was a descriptive survey. A structured questionnaire was used for face-to-face interviews with a convenient sample of 192 subjects, who were admitted in 5 rehabilitation hospitals located in G metropolitan city. RESULTS: The score of rehabilitation motivation in the subjects was a mean of 2.04±0.35, self-efficacy 6.22±2.32, family support 3.40±0.82 and rehabilitation adherence 3.08±0.41. The rehabilitation adherence was a statistically significant difference according to the education level (F=3.40, p=.035), marital status (F=4.04, p=.019), number of personal insurance policies (K=9.80, p=.020), location of paresis (F=2.72, p=.046), and status of current smoking (M=657.00, p=.001). There was significant correlation among degree of rehabilitation adherence, rehabilitation motivation (r=.30, p<.001), self-efficacy (r=.14, p=.046) and family support (r=.18, p=.011). Rehabilitation motivation (β=0.19, p=.007), self-efficacy (β=0.14, p=.035), marital status (β=0.14, p=.038), number of personal insurance policies (β=-0.15, p=.045) and location of paresis(β=-0.15, p=.028) were identified as significant predictors. This model explained 22.6% of variance in rehabilitation adherence (F=5.92, p<.001). CONCLUSION: There is a need to develop an effective intervention for rehabilitation adherence improvement considering the identified variables in this study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of chronic deprivation of estradiol on the serotonin level in Sprague-Dawley rat's cerebral cortex and hippocampus. METHODS: One hundred of female Sprague-Dawley rats were taken care for seven to eight weeks, then they were randomly assigned into two group; fifty rats underwent bilateral oophorectomy & the remaining rats were the control group. Six months after oophorectomy, brain tissue was extracted from cerebral cortex and hippocampus and then homogenated: this was done in the both groups. The upper layer of the homogenated substance was taken and frozen and finally dried up. The next process was marking with PITC, quantification through HPLC and comparing with authentic serotonin. Protein quantity was measured by using Bradford method. RESULTS: Comparison between the bilateral oophorectomy group and the control group for serotonin content in the cerebral cortex was 134.2+/-14.3 nmol/mg protein(mean+/-SEM) and 122.5+/-11.6 nmol/mg protein in each group. As for the serotonin content in the hippocampus was 148.8+/-13.9 nmol/mg protein and 132.9+/-13.7 nmol/mg protein in each group. It shows that, there was no significant difference in the serotonin level, in the two areas mentioned above. CONCLUSION: The effect of estradiol on the serotonin level may be dependent on the hormonal change duration. Chronic effect of hypoestrogenism might have no effect on tryptophan hydroxylase and monoamine oxidase, thus not changin the serotonin level. These data supported the previous findings that chronic hypoestrogenism had no effect on serotonin level.
