4.Effects of a Spouse’s Aromatherapy Hand Massage on Fatigue, Stress, and a Couple’s Relationship in Pregnant Women

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a spouse’s aromatherapy hand massage on fatigue, stress, and a couple’s relationship in pregnant women.
Methods:
A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Pregnant women were selected as participants on prenatal education program of 2 health centers. For the experimental group, 28 pregnant women were selected from 1 health centers. Thirty-two pregnant women were assigned to a control group from another. Bergamot, lavender, and sandalwood oil were mixed at a ratio of 1:1:1 and diluted to 1% in a jojoba carrier oil. This oil was used for aromatherapy and had already been identified as not being hazardous to pregnant women. Participants received an aroma hand massage from their spouses 5 times a week for 4 weeks, a total of 20 times. Pre and post written survey were collected from both groups. The data were analyzed by χ2 test, independent t-test, paired t-test and analysis of covariance using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 25.0 program.Result: There was a statistically significant difference in stress (F=17.39, p<0.001) and the couple’s relationship (F=18.87, p<0.001) between the experimental group and the control group. Fatigue was not significantly different between the 2 groups (F=2.61, p=0.112), but there was a difference pre and post the experimental group (t=-5.30, p<0.001).
Conclusion
These findings indicate that a spouse’s aroma hand massage is effective as a nursing intervention for pregnant women to relieve fatigue and stress, and improve the couple’s relationship.

The complications of herpes zoster ophthalmicus vary greatly among different patients. The major portion of the complications fall under four types; (1) keratitis, (2) iridocyclitis, (3) muscular palsies, and (4) optic neuritis. We have experienced a case of herpes zoster ophthalmicus complicated by abducens palsy, sectorial paralysis of iris sphincter, iritis, and transient increase of intraocular pressure. The case was reviewed and the pathogenesis of the complications were discus sed.

8.Intravenous Immunoglobulin Retreatment in Kawasaki Disease: The Comparison between Single 2 g/kg and 1 g/kg.

PURPOSE: Patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) who remain febrile after first dose of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) are usually treated with a second dose of IVIG. However, the optimal dosage of IVIG in the retreatment of KD is still controversial. We evaluated the impact of IVIG dose difference on the coronary artery lesion (CAL) in the retreatment of KD. METHODS: We performed a prospective study on 24 patients with KD requiring IVIG retreatment from January 2000 to December 2004. The patients were assigned to receive IVIG in the retreatment of KD either as a single infusion of 2 g/kg (A group, 12 patients) or 1 g/kg (B group, 24 patients). We compared the CAL of B group to that of A group for comparable risk of both groups. RESULTS: The incidence of CAL was significantly higher in the 5 of 24 (20.9%) patients with IVIG retreatment vs the 18 of 315 (5.8%) afebrile patients after first course of IVIG treatment (P=0.016). There were no significant differences in age, sex, and other clinical and laboratory findings known as risk factors of CAL between the two groups. Among 24 patients with IVIG retreatment, there were no significant difference in the incidence of CAL between the two groups(Group A, 3/12=25%, vs Group B, 2/12=16.7%) (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Single 1 g/kg IVIG therapy is comparable outcome to single 2 g/kg IVIG therapy in the retreatment of KD, although the efficacy of this practice requires assessment with a randomized controlled prospective trial in more patients.

10.Detection of Ammino Acids Using Microdialysis Technique and Changes of Amino Acid Concentrations in Experimentally Induced Nasal Allergy Model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The basic principle of microdialysis is to mimic the function of a capillary blood vessel by perfusing physiologic liquid implanted into the target tissue. Amino acids are supposed to have functions for controlling the homeostasis of normal nasal mucosa and a role in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis. However, no studies have been conducted about the existence of amino acids in the nasal cavity. This study measures the concentration of 19 amino acids found in the nasal cavity of normal control and experimentally allergy-induced animal model in order to evaluate the difference in the concentration of amino acids between normal and allergic nasal mucosa. MATERIALS AND METHOD: An experimentally induced nasal allergy model was developed by intraperitoneal and intranasal sensitization with ovalbumin in Dunkin-Hartely guinea pigs according to a programmed protocol. A microdialysis probe was designed to be suitable to nasal mucosa using a Cuprophan hollow fiber (200 micrometer inner diameter, 300 micrometer outer diameter, 45 kDa molecular weight cut-off, Fitral, AN 69-HF). After verification of the probe, microdialysis was performed in the inferior turbinate submucosa of normal control (N=8) and experimental (N=8) groups. The concentration of 19 amino acids was analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography. Statistical analysis was performed using a student t-test. RESULTS: All 19 amino acids were validated at various concentrations in the nasal cavity. Glutamate (p=0.036) and GABA (p<0.001) concentrations were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. CONCLUSION: The 19 amino acids measured existed in the nasal cavity at various concentrations, and the concentrations of glutamate and GABA were significantly higher in the allergy group than in the control group. The microdialysis technique is a powerful tool not only to measure endogenous substances for target organ chemistry but also to pharmacokinetically evaluate exogenous drug delivery processes in the nasal cavity.
