Medical ethics, autonomy, and self-regulation form the core of medical professionalism. Therefore, codes and guidelines regarding ethics are key documents that demonstrate the identity of physicians as a professional group in a society. In Korea, foreign declarations such as the Hippocratic Oath and the Geneva Declaration have been translated and introduced, while medical ethics guidelines have been introduced from developed countries. In 1961, 1965, and 1979, the Code of Medical Ethics was created and revised, but only in 1997 did Korean doctors develop their own ethics guidelines and codes reflecting their identity in Korean society. In order for these guidelines and codes to be effective living documents, they should be regularly modified to reflect changes in the medical environment and the field of medicine. In response to the urgent need to establish strict norms of medical professionalism in the 21st century due to internal and external problems in Korean society, the Korean Medical Association worked to revise the Ethics Code and Guidelines in 2016. This article reviews the history of how the Korean Code of Ethics and Guidelines has changed and examines the contents of the Code of Ethics and Guidelines as amended in 2016.

This survey was performed for evaluating and refining the new teaching program for medical ethics which was developed by faculities in Ajou university. Most of the students showed interest and satisfactions as well as con fidences in ethical judgement through the new course of medical ethics. Specific evaluation was as follows; Most of cases in discussion and debates were appropriate for understanding of medical ethical issues. They expressed that they learned how to collaborate in group, accept different opinions and views, build a sense of sharing community and work with an indivisual resposibility. Several ideas for improving medical ethics cirricula were suggested that some cases should be replaced to realistic cases, more clinicians from relevant departments should be involved in discussion, and educational environment should be changed to discuss and debate easily.

Medical ethics is a system of moral principles that apply values and judgments to the practice of medicine. As a scholarly discipline, medical ethics encompasses its practical application in clinical settings as well as work on its history, philosophy, theology, and sociology. The medical profession has long subscribed to a body of ethical statements developed primarily for the benefit of the patient. A physician must recognize responsibility to patients first and foremost, as well as to society, to other health professionals, and to self. This paper presents some information regarding medical ethics, including the values and principles of ethical conduct. Later the requirements of consent form is presented to guide the researchers before conducting a study.

In May 2001, the Code of Medical Ethics, KMA was enacted by Korean Medical Association, but is not proclaimed yet. First of all, newly elected president of KMA should promulgate this code to the all members of the KMA and the public. The code would be used as the ext of the bio-medical ethics education for medical students and physicians as well as a concrete guideline for judgment by the independent ethics committees. And this code is due to be revised according to the change of socio-medical environment.
