Angiosarcoma of spine is a rare neoplasm derived from vascular endothelium. Synonymous term include hemangiosarcoma and malignant hemangioendothelioma. The authors present the clinical, radiological and pathological features of a patient with angiosarcoma located in the thoracic spine. The treatment of this case is discussed.

In this immunohistochemical study we applied a monoclonal antibody(mAb) to evaluate the expression pattern of lymphocyte functionassociated antigen 3(LFA-3) in rabbit`s corneas before and after intracorneal injection of Candida albicans. Ten right eyes were induced to get immunocompromized cornea with subconjunctival injection of 2mg of dexamethasone once a day for 3 days(group I), and 10 left eyes had normal cornea without subconjunctival injection of dexamethazone(group II). Each 2 corneas in both group I and II were resected at 3, 12, 24 and 72 hours after intracorneal injection of C. albicans. Each 2 corneas without intracorneal injection of C. albicans in both groups were used as a control. The results were as follows: LFA-3 was expressed weakly on corneal epithlium in control of group I and group II. Expression of LFA-3 on vascular endothelium of group II was somewhat stronger than that of group I, LFA-3 was expressed moderately on vascular endothelium, and was detected on corneal stroma at 3 hors after intracorneal injection in both groups. Expression of LFA-3 on corneal stroma was slightly increased in both group II, and markedly increased in group I at 12 hours after intracorneal injection. Group II showed slightly increased LFA-3 expression on corneal and II to be expressed on corneal endothelium and inflammatory cells at 24 hours after injection. Its expression on corneal epithelium, stroma and endothelium was more increased in group II than in group I at that time. Group I showed moderate LFA-3 expression on corneal epithelium, corneal endothelium and inflammatory cells, and strong expression on corneal stroma and vascular endothelium at 72 hours after infection. Otherwise, LFA-3 expression in group II was weak to moderate n corneal epithelium, corneal endothelium and inflammatory cell, and moderate on corneal stroma and vascular endothelium. In this study, it was found that expression of LFA-3 in group I was weaker than that in group II in control and at 3 hours after intracorneal injection of C. albicans, but group I showed more strong LFA-3 expression than group II after 12 hours of intracorneal injection.

Isometric tension recording was performed in the transverse strips of porcine coronary arteries and rabbit aorta to observe the effects of the endothelium and endothelium-derived relaxing factor(EDRF) on vasomotor tone and to test the hypothesis that alcohol may have the deleterious effect on endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation. Tension-development by vasoconstrictor was markedly attenuated in the endothelium-intact strips compared to the endothelium denuded strips. Administration of hemoglobin(10-5M) to inhibit the action of EDRF increased tension selectively in the endothelium-infarct strips, which is suggestive of basal EDRF secretion. Nitro L-arginine(10-5M). an analogue of L-arginine(10-4M) partially reversed the inhibitory effect of nitro L-arginine. Ethyl alchol inhibited bradykinin-induced endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation of porcine coronary artery in dose dependent manner. These data suggest that the protective effect of vascular endothelium to the action of vasoconstirctor can be explained by exercise of basal EDRF release and damaged endothelium would be a great risk of induction of vasospasm. Also we believe that there is a relationship of competive inhibition between L-arginine. a precursor of EDRF, and its analogues on the action of EDRF and alcohol intake would be hazardous to the patients with coronary artey disease because its inhibitory action on endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation may evoke myocardial ischemia.

The CD44 protein has a functional domain for binding hyaluronic acid, maintaining the integrity and structure of the epithelium. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the presence and comparison of distribution of CD44 in human and rabbit corneas using immunohistochemical staining method. Immunostaining for CD44 was observed in the epithelium, endothelium and human stromal keratocytes. In particular, the strong positive deposition for CD44 can be seen in basal and limbal layers of the epithelium and in the endothelium. Immunodeposits for CD44 in rabbit cornea were detected in superficial parts of the epithelium, while they were localized in deep stromal keratocytes and the endothelium. In conjunctival tissue, immunostaining for CD44 was found in the epithelium, connective tissue, and vascular endothelium in human specimen but was faintly demonstrated only in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue in the rabbit conjunctiva. No immunostaining for CD44 was seen in control case. Our results suggest that CD44 protein can be seen both in human and rabbit corneas. However, there was different distribution of CD44 between two specimens.

The vascular endothelium is a dynamic structure responsible for the separation and regulated movement of biological material between circulation and interstitial fluid. Hormones and nutrients can move across the endothelium either via a transcellular or paracellular route. Transcellular endothelial transport is well understood and broadly acknowledged to play an important role in the normal and abnormal physiology of endothelial function. However, less is known about the role of the paracellular route. Although the concept of endothelial dysfunction in diabetes is now widely accepted, we suggest that alterations in paracellular transport should be studied in greater detail and incorporated into this model. In this review we provide an overview of endothelial paracellular permeability and discuss its potential importance in contributing to the development of diabetes and associated complications. Accordingly, we also contend that if better understood, altered endothelial paracellular permeability could be considered as a potential therapeutic target for diabetes.

PURPOSE: There have been conflicting reports on vascular response to Panax ginseng. The conflicting reports may be due to difference of ingredient of Panax ginseng. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of saponin, the main ingredient of Panax ginseng, on the vascular contractility. METHODS: The rabbit aortic rings were cut and mounted on the force transducer to record an isometric tension on polygraph. To elucidate the mechanism of saponin effect on vascular smooth muscle, the contractility of the vascular smooth muscle were measured under varying experimental condition. RESULTS: 1) When the aortic rings were precontracted with norepinephrine, saponin caused biphasic(initial relaxation-sustained contraction) dose-response in the endothelium dependent manner. But saponin had no effect on the resting tension. 2) When EDRF inhibitors such as methylene blue(10(-5)M), hemoglobin(10(-5)M), N-omega-nitro-L-arginine(100microM) were added to precontracted ring with norepinephrine, the initial relaxation caused by 2mg% saponin was inhibited. 3) When Ca(2+)-channel blocker, nifedipine(5x10(-7)M), was added to precontracted rings with norepinephrine, the sustsined contraction by saponin was inhibited. 4) When hemoglobin(10(-5)M) was added to precontracted rings with norepinephrine, the contractility by norepinephrine was increased and this effect was further augmented by 2mg% saponin. CONCLUSIONS: From the above results, it may be concluded that saponin stimulated the release of both an endothelium-dependent relaxing factor and endothelium-dependent contracting factor.

OBJECTIVETo investigate interleukin-33 (IL-33) in the arterial vascular endothelium of rabbits infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), and to explore the relationship between P. gingivalis and atherosclerosis.

METHODSA total of 24 rabbits were randomly divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental group received intravenous injection of P. gingivalis once a week for 12 weeks to establish a coronary atherosclerosis model. The rabbits in the control group were injected with equal volume of physiological saline. All the rabbits were killed after 13 weeks. The IL-33 expression levels in the arterial vascular endothelium of the rabbits were detected through immunohistochemistry, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot analysis. The effects of P. gingivalis on the IL-33 expression in the arterial vascular endothelium of the rabbits were analyzed.

RESULTSThe relative expression levels of IL-33 mRNA in the vascular endothelium cells were 58.244±2.407, and the relative expression levels of IL-33 protein were 1.863±0.171 in the experimental group. The relative expression levels of IL-33 mRNA were 3.143±0.805, and the relative expression levels of IL-33 protein were 0.537±
0.028 in the control group. The expression levels of IL-33 mRNA and protein of vascular endothelium cells in the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P<0.01).

CONCLUSIONSP. gingivalis infection promotes IL-33 expression levels in vascular endothelial cells and may regulate the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis.
