1.Development of a portfolio for competency-based assessment in a clinical clerkship curriculum.

The purpose of this report was to describe our experience in planning and developing a portfolio for a clinical clerkship curriculum. We have developed a portfolio for assessing student competency since 2007. During an annual workshop on clinical clerkship curricula, clerkship directors from five Paik hospitals of Inje University met to improve the assessment of the portfolio. We generated templates for students to record their activities and reflection and receive feedback. We uploaded these templates to our school's website for students to download freely. Annually, we have held a faculty development seminar and a workshop for portfolio assessment and feedback. Also, we established an orientation program on how to construct a learning portfolio for students. Future actions include creating a ubiquitous portfolio system, extending the portfolio to the entire curriculum, setting up an advisor system, and managing the quality of the portfolio. This study could be helpful for medical schools that plan to improve their portfolio assessment with an outcome-based approach.

2.Simulation-based ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia curriculum for anesthesiology residents

Proficiency in ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia (UGRA) requires the practitioner to acquire cognitive and technical skills. For anesthesiology residents, an assortment of challenges has been identified in learning UGRA skills. Currently, a validated UGRA curriculum for residents does not exist, and the level of UGRA proficiency achieved during residency training can vary considerably. Simulated practice has been shown to enhance proficiency in UGRA, and a competency-based education with simulation training has been endorsed for anesthesiology residents. The objective of this review is to outline simulation-based training that can be implemented in a UGRA curriculum and to explore educational tools like gamification to facilitate competency in regional anesthesiology.

3.The Impact of Grit on University Student's Core Competency in Dental Hygiene Students

BACKGROUND: Recently, competency-based education has been reorganized in the dental hygiene curriculum. In education, non-cognitive factors are emphasized. Grit, the non-cognitive ability to persevere to achieve an individual’s long-term goals, is emerging. This study aims to identify the degree of grit and core competencies in students and to investigate the relationship between them and the factors that affect these core competencies. METHODS: This study was conducted using 350 dental hygiene students who were randomly assigned a structured questionnaire to complete. The final analysis included 321 students. The survey contents evaluated grit, core competencies, and general characteristics. The difference in the degree of grit and core competencies in conjunction with the general characteristics of the subjects was analyzed using the t-test/Mann Whitney U-test and the ANOVA/Kruskal-Wallis H test. Multiple regression analysis was then conducted to determine the factors affecting the core competencies of the subjects. RESULTS: The difference of ‘grit’ according to general characteristics was statistically significant in ‘major satisfaction’, ‘relationship’, ‘perceived academic achievement’, ‘grade point average (GPA)’. The difference in ‘core competency’ according to general characteristics was statistically significant in ‘grade’, ‘department selection’, ‘major satisfaction’, ‘relationship’, ‘perceived academic achievement’, ‘GPA’. Among the sub-areas of ‘grit’, ‘perseverance of effort’ showed a high correlation with ‘core competency’ and was statistically significant. As a result of regression analysis, ‘major satisfaction’, ‘perceived academic achievement’ and ‘grit’ of dental hygiene students had a statistically significant influence on ‘core competency’. Meanwhile, ‘GPA’ was not seen to be statistically significant in ‘core competency’. CONCLUSION: Grit, a non-cognitive factor, had a statistically significant effect on core competency, while the effects on GPA, a cognitive factor, were not statistically significant. Among the sub-factors of grit, ‘perseverance of effort’ had a statistically significant effect on ‘problem-solving competency’ and ‘academic competency’, which are ‘core competency’ sub factors.

4.Exploring Alternatives in the Development of Competency-Based Dentistry Curriculum: An Ontological Approach

Recently, there has been active reformation of higher education. This trend has resulted in competency-based education (CBE) in many universities around the world, and dentistry education is no exception. However, it is necessary to keep in mind that CBE is both attractive and has its limitations. In particular, higher education is facing the obstacle of preparing students to survive in a supercomplex world in which nothing can be taken for granted. In addition, the frame of understanding and action lacks stability. In these circumstances, competency-based dentistry curriculum (CBDC) needs to be reestablished to deal with the changes and challenges of a supercomplex world. The purpose of this study is to explore alternatives to current CBDC practices, specifically based on an ‘ontological approach.’ To achieve this purpose, the importance of the ontological approach in the development of higher education curriculum in the future was examined. Then, the actual status and characteristics of CBDC in the present situation were investigated. Lastly, the development of CBCD based on an ontological approach in dentistry education was suggested.

5.The Process of Developing a Clinical Presentation Curriculum.

In Korea, many medical schools have adapted their curricula to the recent paradigm shift introducing a professional graduate school system with universal accreditation criteria for medical education. This rapid transformation has driven the new adoption of system-based integrated curriculum, problem-based learning, team-based learning, and competency-based assessment. In the hundred years since the publication of Flexner's report that suggested a two-phase educational structure consisting of a basic science didactic curriculum followed by the practicum of clinical clerkships, there have been many advancements in curriculum development for medical education. Medical education is undergoing a major paradigm shift from structure- and process-based to competency-based education utilizing outcome-based assessments. The authors reviewed the existing medical literature to provide practical insight into the clinical presentation curriculum introduced by University of Calgary in 1994, developing a roadmap to accomplish full implementation and evaluation. In the clinical presentation based curriculum, schemata (schemes) are organized by experts from terminal objectives, and are considered to have two functions: first, to serve as frameworks around which students can learn new information and secondly, to provide an approach to clinical problem solving. We conclude that there should be further meticulous review of this new system and a prospective evaluation of the students' ability to benefit from it before launching a program based on the indiscreet adoption of a fashionable curricular reform.

6.The Development of the Integrated Nursing Practicum Education Matrix based on Learning Outcomes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop an integrated nursing practicum education matrix based on the learning outcomes of each stage. METHODS: In this Delphi technique study, 10 experts, consisting of six professors and four nurses, participated in the development of the matrix. The first step was an in-depth review for the composition of the questionnaire and the second step was the Delphi technique. The Delphi survey was conducted two times in order to complete the components of the matrix. The survey data was analyzed for statistical averages and standard deviations to decide the order of priority. RESULTS: According to each stage (i.e. fundamental stage, competent stage, and proficient stage), the matrix was composed of education contents, methods, evaluation methods, and curriculum outcomes. CONCLUSION: The integrated nursing practicum education matrix of Y University was completed. The developed matrix will result in a reduction in the gap between nursing education and clinical practice and an improvement in nursing competency.

8.Development of Premedical Curriculum in Inje University's College of Medicine

One important purpose of premedical education is to help students attain core competencies during the two-year premedical program. Since premedical curriculum is the foundation of medical education, it is necessary to develop the premedical curriculum in accordance with the overarching curriculum of a medical school. Inje University's College of Medicine (IUCM) has attempted to integrate competency-based medical education into the premedical education curriculum. The revised premedical curriculum aims to develop students' intrinsic competencies during premedical years. In an effort to do so, IUCM defined competencies for premedical education, analyzed and designed premedical courses according to the defined competencies, and suggested learner-centered instructional methods. As a result of implementing the revised premedical curriculum, students have reported both positive experiences and difficulties. Based on the results, it will be necessary to continuously improve the premedical curriculum as well as develop appropriate methods for evaluating student achievement of the defined competencies.

9.Effects of a Virtual Reality Simulation and a Blended Simulation of Care for Pediatric Patient with Asthma

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a virtual reality simulation and a blended simulation on nursing care for children with asthma through an evaluation of critical thinking, problem-solving processes, and clinical performance in both education groups before and after the educational intervention.METHODS: The participants were 48 nursing students. The experimental group (n=22) received a blended simulation, combining a virtual reality simulation and a high-fidelity simulation, while the control group (n=26) received only a virtual reality simulation. Data were collected from February 25 to 28, 2019 and analyzed using SPSS version 25 for Windows.RESULTS: The pretest and posttest results of each group showed statistically significant improvements in critical thinking, problem-solving processes, and clinical performance. In a comparison of the results of the two education groups, the only statistically significant difference was found for critical thinking.CONCLUSION: Simulation-based education in child nursing has continued to involve high-fidelity simulations that are currently run in many programs. However, incorporating a new type of blended simulation, combining a virtual reality simulation and a high-fidelity simulation, into the nursing curriculum may contribute to the further development of nursing education.

10.Global Doctor's Role and Outcome-Based Medical Education.

Since mid-20th century, many environmental changes in medicine have challenged the traditional role of doctors and the movement to outcome-based education (OBE) has progressed gradually but significantly. Over decades bilateral progression of defining the global doctor's role and developing OBE with implementation to medical schools has been spread world-widely. In this paper, we explored the history and contents of the doctor's role and OBE at various levels-international, national, institutional and medical schools. We conclude that the global doctor's role is composed of patient care, communication and professionals added by others related to their peculiar situation and should be linked to the outcomes of undergraduate, postgraduate and continuous medical education which are developed and implemented to the curriculum and program at any country in order to cope with the global challenges of the future.
