1.A study on the Korean dental education system

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to propose criteria for evaluating the validity of dental education systems in Korea and suggest future directions for their improvement. METHODS: We looked into dental educational institutions and derived criteria for analysis and comparison of dental education systems in Korea. Using analytical methods, we compared the strengths and weaknesses of each education system, and suggested core areas of improvement. RESULTS: Considering the demands placed on the Korean dental education sector, it is desirable to have an integrated education system that includes the preliminary and main courses, comprehensive training linking the basic medicine and clinical practice, and complete career guidance. CONCLUSIONS: A good dental education system is one that meets the educational goals set by a dental school. If the goal is to train a student to be a good dental practitioner, a 2+4 or 4+4 system is recommended, while a 3+4 model is more suitable when the objective is to train students to be researchers.

4.The Efficacy of Mammography Boot Camp to Improve the Performance of Radiologists.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a mammography boot camp (MBC) to improve radiologists' performance in interpreting mammograms in the National Cancer Screening Program (NCSP) in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January and July of 2013, 141 radiologists were invited to a 3-day educational program composed of lectures and group practice readings using 250 digital mammography cases. The radiologists' performance in interpreting mammograms were evaluated using a pre- and post-camp test set of 25 cases validated prior to the camp by experienced breast radiologists. Factors affecting the radiologists' performance, including age, type of attending institution, and type of test set cases, were analyzed. RESULTS: The average scores of the pre- and post-camp tests were 56.0 +/- 12.2 and 78.3 +/- 9.2, respectively (p < 0.001). The post-camp test scores were higher than the pre-camp test scores for all age groups and all types of attending institutions (p < 0.001). The rate of incorrect answers in the post-camp test decreased compared to the pre-camp test for all suspicious cases, but not for negative cases (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The MBC improves radiologists' performance in interpreting mammograms irrespective of age and type of attending institution. Improved interpretation is observed for suspicious cases, but not for negative cases.

6.Development of an E-learning Education Program for Preventing Nursing Errors and Adverse Events of Operating Room Nurses.

PURPOSE: This study was to develop, implement, and evaluate an e-learning education program for improving practical knowledge and preventing nursing errors and adverse events of nurses working in the operating room (OR). METHOD: The e-learning program was developed and evaluated according to the following processes: 1) preparation phase 2) implementation phase 3) evaluation phase. In evaluation phase, the effectiveness was analyzed based on the Kirkpatrick's model. RESULTS: The e-learning program consisted of OR basic nursing skills and techniques and nursing activities' manual based on the categories of nursing errors: surgical operation preparation, nursing skills and techniques, environment management, patient safety and comfort, and patient monitoring. The program was provided through on-line, http:// cafe.daum.net/pnuhorn, for 4 weeks. The mean score(percent) of participants' satisfaction was 21.24+/-1.71(68.2%). Their total knowledge level was significantly improved(Z=-3.00, p=.003) and specifically in the category of environment management(Z=-3.77, p<.001) and patient monitoring(Z=-2.46, p=.014). The occurrence of nursing errors or adverse events was a little decreased, but not statistically significant(Z= -3.10, p=.756). CONCLUSION: E-learning for nurses is one way of effective and efficient teaching-learning strategies. For better e-learning, it is important to develop the vital content of the education and objective measures for detecting nursing errors and adverse events.

8.Factors Influencing Intention to Use Smart-based Continuing Nurse Education.

PURPOSE: There is increasing attention to smart-learning as a new education paradigm. The purpose of this study was to identify the level of intention to use smart-based Continuing Nurse Education (CNE) and factors influencing intention to use smart-based CNE. METHODS: Participants were 486 nurses from 14 organizations, including 12 hospitals, a nurses association, and an office of education. Data were collected from November 5 to 18, 2014 using self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. RESULTS: The mean score for intention to use smart-based CNE was 6.34 out of 10. The factors influencing intention to use smart-based CNE were nursing informatics competency, current unit career, and smartphone addiction. These variables explained 10% of variance in intention to use smart-based CNE. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that efforts to enhance the nursing informatics competency of nurses could increase usage rate of smart-based CNE. The CNE policy makers will find this study very useful and the findings of this study will help to provide insight into the best way to develop smart-based CNE.

10.Web-Based Continuing Medical Education in Korean and Foreign Orthopaedic Societies.

PURPOSE: The current states of web-contents for continuing medical education (CME) of domestic and foreign orthropaedic web sites were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Korean Orthopaedic Association (KOA) and Korean Orthopaedic Cyber-Society (KOC) as domestic, and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgerns (AAOS), Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS), AOSpine, and Arthroscopy as foreign web sites were searched in view of provided information technology (IT), including electrical paper (ePDF), lecture and surgical procedure video clips, case discussion, interactive content, and CME credit program. RESULTS: KOA supplied 19 types of ePDFs, and KOC, 43 video clips, and 217 case discussions. However, only one video clip was updated from 2011 to 2012 and 20 video clips from 2008 were not accessible. AAOS provided one type of ePDF, 142 lecture and 570 surgical procedure video clips, five interactive CME programs and 107 CME credit programs. In JBJS, one kind of ePDF, 97 video clips, 24 case discussions, and 37 CME credit programs were provided. In AOSpine, 12 types of ePDFs, 994 video clips, one interactive content, and 347 case discussions were provided. In Arthroscopy, one type of ePDF and 126 video clips were supplied. All web-contents were available. CONCLUSION: A large number of better quality web-contents and web-based CME credit programs should be implemented with standardized IT for Web-based CME in domestic orthropaedic societies.
