Edema, as one of common clinical diseases, could be treated by taking medicines and adopting external therapies with traditional Chinese medicines (TCM). In recent years, there have been many clinical and basic studies concerning external therapies with TCM on edema Data showed that the external therapies are mostly composed of such purgating drugs as Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, Natrii Sulfas and Pharbitidis Semen, heat-clearing drug such as Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex and resuscitation-inducing drug such as Borneolum Syntheticum. The study showed that ingredients of external therapies did not pass through hilum and hepatic system, and thus avoided the first pass effect of livers. They enabled effective components of drugs to be rapidly absorbed through pores and skins, strengthened the effect against edema, shortened the treatment course, decreased side effects, and were convenient and inexpensive. External therapies with TCM could play unique advantages in inhibiting edema in the future clinical studies.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 2016;54(1):47-51
Bortezomib (Velcade(R)) is proteasome inhibitor that is used as a first-line therapy for multiple myeloma. It can cause gastrointestinal, hematologic, and neuromuscular side effects, and a cutaneous reaction is one of its common adverse reactions. To date, several bortezomib-induced cutaneous adverse reactions have been reported, including folliculitis-like rash, pruriginous rash, purpuric rash, mouth swelling, stomatitis-mucositis, edema in the lower limbs, telogen effluvium, and vasculitis. In the Korean literature, only one case of vasculitis has been reported earlier. Two patients have presented with multiple plaques on the trunk at our clinic. The lesions developed several days after bortezomib chemotherapy, and disappeared spontaneously in about 1 week. Herein, we report bortezomib-induced drug eruption presenting as multiple plaques on the trunk with a review of the relevant literature.

To systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Cheezheng Pain Relieving Plaster in the treatment of soft tissue injury. Four Chinese databases(namely CNKI, WanFang, VIP, CBM) and 2 English databases(namely PubMed, Cochrane Library) were retrieved from the establishment of each database to March 2019. The randomized controlled trials of Cheezheng Pain Relieving Plaster compared with routine therapy in treatment of soft tissue injury were included. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk Assessment Tool. Five studies were included, and 367 patients were enrolled. None of the included studies reported randomized concealment, blinding, follow-up and dropping off. The results showed that Cheezheng Pain Relieving Plaster may have advantages in alleviating joint pain, swelling, tenderness and dysfunction and other symptoms, with no serious adverse reaction. Compared with routine therapy, Cheezheng Pain Relieving Plaster may have advantages in the treatment of soft tissue injury. However, due to the quality of the included RCTs, the conclusions of this study were limited. In addition, to produce high-quality evidences for the clinical application of Cheezheng Pain Relieving Plaster, the conclusions of this study shall be further verified with large-sample, scientifically designed and strictly implemented clinical trials.

Chinese journal of integrative medicine 2013;19(11):804-814
Although many agents for acute ischemic stroke treatment have been developed from extensive preclinical studies, most have failed in clinical trials. As a result, researchers are seeking other methods or agents based on previous studies. Among the various prospective approaches, vascular protection might be the key for development of therapeutic agents for stroke and for improvements in the efficacy and safety of conventional therapies. Traditional medicines in Asian countries are based on clinical experiences and literature accumulated over thousands of years. To date, many studies have used traditional herbal medicines to prove or develop new agents based on stroke treatments mentioned in traditional medicinal theory or other clinical data. In the current review, we describe the vascular factors related to ischemic brain damage and the herbal medicines that impact these factors, including Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, Notoginseng Radix, and Curcumae Rhizoma, based on scientific reports and traditional medical theory. Further, we point out the problems associated with herbal medicines in stroke research and propose better methodologies to address these problems.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1999;40(5):965-973
PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of enhanced MR imaging in monitoring tumor response to preoperativechemotherapy for osteosarcomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fo r t y - s even patients (30 males and 17 females, witha mean age 17 years ; range 8 -44 years) with osteosarcomas were included in this study. We obtained spin echoT1-, T2-, and enhanced T1-weighted images before and after pre-operative chemotherapy and in all patientscorrelated changes in MR parameters with histopathologic response. We also obtained 19 specimen MR images, correlating these with histopathologic results in order to estimate tissue specific signals. Patients with morethan 10% viable tumor in the resected specimen were considered poor respon-ders(n=26), while those with 10% orless viable tumor were considered good respon-ders(n=21). RESULTS: Four distinct patterns of signal intensitycorresponded, respectively to dead bone and dense fibrosis (low on T1- and T2-weighted images), viable tumor cells(in-termediate on T1- and high on T2-weighted images), necrosis (low on T1- and high on T 2 - weighted images),and hemorrhage (high on T1- and T2-weighted images), but a wide range of overlap was noted. In all four groups, viable tumor cells remained. Increased tumor vo l u m e, stable or increased edema and enhancement were goodpre-dictors of poor response (predictive values of 83%, 77%, and 89%, respectively). Decreased enhancement was theonly reliable predictor of good response (predictive value, 73%). Changes in tumor margin, homogeneity, signalintensity, and joint effu-sion did not correlate with histopathologic response. CONCLUSION: Signal intensities donot reflect histologic nature. Enhanced MR imaging is a useful predictor of tumor response to preoperativechemotherapy.

Korean Circulation Journal 1994;24(6):899-903
Lymphomatous involvement of the heart, occurring at initial diagnosis and presentation, is extremely rare. We report here a case of 58 year old man who presented with generalized edema, pericardial effusion, and a large right atrial mass detected by transesophageal echocardiography. There is no other evidence of disseminated lymphoma in this patient. Tumor removal and pulmonary embolectomy was done. Pathologically, the mass was malignant lymphoma, diffuse large cell type. Unfortunately, we have no chance to perform the intensive chemotherapy. The patient discharged in moribund state.

Chinese Journal of Plastic Surgery 2015;31(5):356-359
OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical effect of steroids on reducing postoperative edema in rhinoplasty.
METHODSCochrane, Medline data, Pubmed date, were searched and updated on October 2013. Randomized controlled trials(RCTS) studies were included to assess the efficacy of steroids on decreasing postoperative edema after rhinoplasty. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated, and date analyses were performed using the Cochrane Collaboration's software RevMan 5.2.
RESULTSA total of 4 RCTS involved 172 patients with rhinoplasty, including 87 patients in the experimental group( steroid) and 85 paitents in control group (placebo). Meta analysis results showed the edema in experimental group was significantly less than that in the control group on postoperative day 1 and 3 (P < 0.01), while the difference was not significant on postoperative day 7 (P = 0.19).
CONCLUSIONSPerioperative application of steroid in rhinoplasty can significantly reduce periorbital edema in the first postoperative day. The edema can completely be relieved after application of steroid for 3 days. It is a safe and effective way to reduce the postoperative edema.

Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines (English Ed.) 2021;19(11):856-867
Chansu has demonstrated adverse reactions in clinical settings, which is associated with its toxicity and limits its clinical applications. But there are methodological limitations for drug safety evaluation. In the current study, ultra-high performance liquid chromatography, lipidomic profiling, and molecular docking were used to systemically assess Chansu-induced acute inflammatory irritation and further identify the underlying drug targets. Compared with the EtOAc extract, Chansu water fraction containing indolealkylamines caused acute inflammatory irritation in rats, including acute pain (spontaneous raising foot reaction), and inflammation (paw edema). At the molecular level, lipids analysis revealed significantly higher levels of pro-inflammatory mediators of the COX and LOX pathways. However, anti-inflammatory mediators from the CYP 450, ALA, and DHA pathways markedly decreased after exposure to Chansu water fraction. Moreover, four indolealkylamines from Chansu showed a high theoretical affinity to a known irritation target, 5-HT
