2.A Survey of Ectoparasite Infestations in Stray Dogs of Gwang-ju City, Republic of Korea.

This study was designed to investigate the incidence of ectoparasite infestation among stray dogs in Gwang-ju City, Republic of Korea. A total of 103 stray dogs collected in the Animal Shelter of Gwang-ju City from November 2003 to August 2005 were investigated in this study. Ectoparasites of one or more genera were detected in 45.6% (47 / 103) of the dogs examined for dermatologic lesions and/or skin scrapings (from 3-5 affected areas). Otodectes cynotis was found to be the most frequent parasite (22.3%, 23 / 103), followed by Sarcoptes scabiei var canis (19.4%, 20 / 103), Ctenocephalides canis (6.8%, 7 / 103), Demodex canis (4.9%, 5 / 103), and Trichodectes canis (1.0%, 1 / 103). Monospecific infestation was found in 83.0% (39 / 47) of the affected dogs, whereas concurrent infestations with 2 or more ectoparasites per animal were found in 17.0% (8 / 47) of the affected dogs. Trichodectes canis is reported for the first time in the Republic of Korea. Dogs less than 1 yr old were more heavily infected than other age groups (66.7%), and small-sized dogs of less than 3 kg body weight were more heavily infected than larger dogs (41.7%).

4.Delusional Parasitosis as 'Folie a Deux'.

Delusional parasitosis is characterized by the unshakeable belief of being infested with tiny (microscopic) insects. Patients spend much time trying to get rid of the bugs and suffer from these symptoms. Patients prefer to go to dermatologists because they have a strong conviction over the presence of a somatic disease and do not accept any psychiatric advice for their complaints. 'Folie a deux' or shared psychotic disorder (SPD) is a relatively rare syndrome, which has long attracted clinical attention. Delusional parasitosis is associated in 5-15% of SPD and can run within a family. We experienced delusional parasitosis as 'Folie a Deux' between a mother and her son and successfully treated them through early psychiatric intervention. We believe that attention should be drawn to DP with SPD.

5.A New Species of Chigger Mite (Acari: Trombiculidae) from Rodents in Southwest China.

This paper describes a new species of chigger mite (Acari: Trombiculidae), Gahrliepia cangshanensis n. sp., from rodents in southwest China. The specimens were collected from Yunnan red-backed voles, Eothenomys miletus (Thomas, 1914), and a Chinese white-bellied rat, Niviventer confucianus (Milne-Edwards, 1871) in Yunnan Province. The new species is unique mainly in its number of dorsal setae (n=21), and it has the following features: fT (formula of palpotarsus)=4B (B=branched), fp (formula of palpal seta)=B/N/N/N/B (N=naked), a broad tongue-shaped scutum with an almost straight posterior margin, and 17 PPLs (posterior posterolateral seta) with a length of 36-43 microm. This chigger mite may also infect other rodent hosts and may be distributed in other localities.

6.Prevalence of pediculosis and scabies in preschool nursery children of Afyon, Turkey.

Scabies and pediculosis are ubiquitous, contagious, and debilitating parasitic dermatoses. The tendency of high prevalence of pediculosis and scabies among school and preschool age children has prompted us to conduct a head louse and scabies prevalence survey among preschool nursery children in our district. A school-based, crosssectional study was performed, with 1,134 children chosen for evaluation. All cases were evaluated by physical examination and a detailed, structured questionnaire. The infestation was found in 14 (1.2%) of 1,134 children; 9 (0.8%) with pediculosis capitis and 5 (0.4%) with scabies. We found that infestations were more frequent in children with mothers whose education levels were low. This indicates the necessity of an improvement in the economic and sociocultural status of the community and the promotion of hygiene concepts and practices in order to improve health of preschool age children.

7.Prevalence and predictors of pediculosis capitis among primary school children in Hulu Langat, Selangor

Introduction: Pediculosis capitis infestation is endemic in
both developing and developed countries leading to various
physical, economical and psychological consequences. Our
main objective was to determine the prevalence and
predictors of pediculosis capitis among primary school
children in Hulu Langat District, Malaysia.
Methods: An analytic cross-sectional study using cluster
random sampling method was carried out in Hulu Langat
District, Malaysia. Self-administered pretested
questionnaires were used to collect the data. Hair and scalp
examination was also carried out. Multivariate logistic
regression was used to control for potential confounding
and determine the predictors.
Results: The overall mean age of the 1,336 respondents was
9.3 years. Majority were males (52.8%), Malays (79.5%) and
81.3% of the fathers had secondary or tertiary education as
compared to 77.3% for the mothers. The overall prevalence
of pediculosis capitis was 15.3%. The prevalence of
pediculosis was significantly higher among females (28.4%)
than males (3.7%, p=0.001). Multivariate logistic regression
analysis showed that age 10 years or more (Odds Ratio (OR)
= 2.34, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.673 to 3.272), female
gender (OR = 10.26, 95% CI = 6.620 to 15.903), history of
contact with an infested person (OR = 2.11, 95% CI = 1.506 to
2.960), Indian compared to Chinese (OR = 3.55, 95% CI =
1.282 to 9.860), Malay to Chinese (OR = 2.59, 95% CI = .994
to 6.774) were associated with pediculosis capitis.
Conclusions: Prevalence of pediculosis capitis among
children aged 7 - 12 years in Hulu Langat District was high.
There is a need for screening and treatment of pediculosis
capitis in primary schools.

9.Chemotherapeutic drugs for common parasitic diseases in Korea.

Incidence of parasitic diseases in Korea has been changing recently. The incidence of some parasitic diseases such as toxocariasis and cryptosporidiosis has increased, while that of soil-transmitted helminthic diseases has drastically decreased. Malaria reemerged in 1993 but has decreased in the 2010s. Here, common parasitic diseases that can be encountered in the clinical field are introduced, along with therapeutic agents such as anthelmintics, anti-malarial drugs, and anti-protozoan drugs to help general physicians select the appropriate medicine for parasitic diseases. Currently, soil-transmitted helminths are not a public health problem. On the other hand, the egg positive rate of Clonorchis sinensis has not decreased rapidly due to the habit of eating raw fresh water fishes in endemic areas; however, due to low worm density, it is difficult to detect infected persons only by clinical symptoms. Toxocariasis and ocular acanthamoebiasis can be detected more frequently due to appropriate diagnostic tools and physicians' concern. Cases of intestinal trematodiases, intestinal protozoasis, and vaginal trichomoniasis have decreased year by year. Since enterobiasis, pediculosis, and scabies are contact-borne diseases, local transmission and resurgence are always possible. Only a few antiparasitic agents can be prescribed in the clinics: albendazole, praziquantel, metronidazole, chloroquine, primaquine, and crotamiton. It may be helpful to general physicians to be reminded of the indications, prescription methods, and side effects described briefly for each drug that can be prescribed for parasitic diseases.
