1.Cystic Echinococcosis of the Pelvic Bone with Recurrences: A Case Report.
The Korean Journal of Parasitology 2011;49(3):277-279
Hydatid cysts commonly affect the liver and the lung. However, they rarely involve bones with vertebral column. We hereby report a case of a female patient with cystic echinococcosis of the hip bone and ilium. She presented with a long history of frequent recurrences highlighting the dismal prognosis at this rare site. Resection of the hydatid cyst from the sacroiliac region was done with allograft and autograft (rib graft) with lumbosacroiliac fixation. Follow-up of the patient at 6 months showed no detectable abnormality on radiology and the patient was doing well.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infestation caused by the larval form of the cestode worms Echinococcus. In humans, the most commonly affected organs are liver and lung. Most cysts remain clinically silent and are diagnosed incidentally or when complications occur. The incidence of hydatid disease is high in the Middle East, Australia, East and South Africa and Central Europe. In Korea, hydatid disease is rare and has been reported in a few cases. We experienced a case of multiple intraperitoneal cysts from ruptured hepatic hydatid cysts in a 35-year old man. His complaint was palpable abdominal mass and discomfort. Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan revealed multiple hepatic and intraperitoneal cysts. The surgical findings showed multiple cysts and daughter cysts. The pathologic finding of resected cyst was the characteristic pattern of outer thick laminated membrane and inner thin germinal layer. Albendazole was administrated for prophylatic purpose.

Orbital hydatid cyst is a rare form of hydatidosis, comprising less than 1% of all hydatid cysts reported. The first choice of treatment for orbital hydatid cyst is surgery. Preoperative diagnosis is important, so as to avoid rupture of the cyst and prevent the spread of the parasitic disease. Herein, we present the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of a case of primary orbital hydatid cyst.

Cystic disease of the spleen is an uncommon entity in general population. Most cases result from parasitic infection by Echinococcus granulosus, a form called splenic hydatid disease (SHD), with a reported frequency of 0.5-6.0% within abdominal hydatidosis. On the contrary, an isolated splenic involvement of hydatid disease is very uncommon even in endemic regions. Two cases of primary SHD managed with open and laparoscopic radical surgery in our department are reported herein. Primary SHD is a rare entity with non-specific symptoms underlying clinical suspicion by the physician for prompt diagnosis. Surgical treatment is the mainstay therapy, while laparoscopic approach when feasible is safe, offering the advantages of laparoscopic surgery.

Korean Journal of Radiology 2007;8(6):548-551
Pelvic masses, especially hydatid disease, rarely present with sciatica (1, 2). We present the computed tomography (CT) and the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of a 49-year-old female patient with presacral hydatid disease, who was evaluated for her sciatica. We also want to emphasize the importance of assessing the pelvis of patients with symptoms and clinical findings that are inconsistent and that cannot be satisfactorily explained by the spinal imaging findings.
