2.Clinical Trial of Dysprosium-165 HMA in the Treatment of Rheumatoid Knee Synovitis.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of radiation synovectomy with Dy-165 HMA in chronic rheumatoid synovitis of the knee METHODS: Two hundred thirty six knees of 212 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and persistent synovitis of the knee were treated with the intraarticular injection of 250~300 mCi of Dy-165 HMA which was prepared by KAERI. Efficacy was assessed by the following parameters: visual analog scale of the knee pain while walking and resting, circumference of the knee, range of motion of the knee. The final global assessment was classified as good, fair or poor. Estra-articular leakage of Dy-165 HMA was determined by blood pool and urine radioactivity and scintigraphic evaluation of liver, groin, and knee joints. RESULTS: l) The optimum radiation dose was 260mCi. 2) The mean follow up periods were 50.4(24-112) weeks. 3) Forty four percent of the knees showed good results, 32% fair results, and 24% shwoed good results. 4) In knees with stage I radiographic changes, 81% showed improvement, of which 54% showed good results. In knees with stage II changes, 78% showed improvement including 39% of the patients with good results. There was a direct correlation between the radiographic stage and response to treatment. 5) The mean period of improvement for the 180 knees that reponded to treatment was 41.4(24-106) weeks. Ten of the 180 knees with improvement relapsed after the mean period of 64(28-80) weeks. 6) Leakage of radioactivity from the injected joint was minimal. 7) Adverse reactions were rare(radiation burn : 4, transient postinjection "flare" : 14). CONCLUSIONS: The optimum radiation dose in Korean was somewhat less than of other foreign reports. Dy-165 HMA radiation synovectomy is a safe and useful therapy for chronic synovitis of the knee joint.

3.Zinc Absorption from Representative Diet in a Chinese Elderly Population Using Stable Isotope Technique.

OBJECTIVETo determine the dietary zinc absorption in a Chinese elderly population and provide the basic data for the setting of zinc (Zn) recommended nutrient intakes (RNI) for Chinese elderly people.
METHODSA total of 24 elderly people were recruited for this study and were administered oral doses of 3 mg 67Zn and 1.2 mg dysprosium on the fourth day. The primary macronutrients, energy, and phytic acid in the representative diet were examined based on the Chinese National Standard Methods. Fecal samples were collected during the experimental period and analyzed for zinc content, 67Zn isotope ratio, and dysprosium content.
RESULTSThe mean (± SD) zinc intake from the representative Chinese diet was 10.6 ± 1.5 mg/d. The phytic acid-to-zinc molar ratio in the diet was 6.4. The absorption rate of 67Zn was 27.9% ± 9.2%. The RNI of zinc, which were calculated by the absorption rate in elderly men and women, were 10.4 and 9.2 mg/d, respectively.
CONCLUSIONThis study got the dietary Zn absorption in a Chinese elderly population. We found that Zn absorption was higher in elderly men than in elderly women. The current RNI in elderly female is lower than our finding, which indicates that more attention is needed regarding elderly females' zinc status and health.

4.Synthesis, structure characterization and anti-tumor activity of lanthanide complex Ln (Phen)2 (5-Fu)3 (NO3) (NO3 )2.

AIMTo study the biochemistry of lanthanides, the cooperative action of inorganic and organic anti-tumor drugs.
METHODSA series of rare earth complexes were synthesized with Ln(NO3) 6H2O, Phen and 5-Fu. Their anti-tumor activity was measured by the improved MTT, SRB methods.
RESULTSThe formula of complex Ln[(Phen)2(5-Fu)3(NO3)](NO3)2(Ln = Y, La, Ce, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er; Phen = 1, 10-phenanthroline; 5-Fu = fluorouracil) was characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductivity, IR, TGA, and 13C NMR spectra. The preliminary biological activity studies indicated that Lanthanide complex has strong anti-tumor activity in vitro.
CONCLUSIONThe complex might have anti-tumor cooperation action.
