OBJECTIVETo explore the mechanism of protective effect of Sphingosine-1-phosphate(S1P) in cultured neonatal rat cardiomyocytes dining simulated hypoxia/reoxygenation.
METHODSOn the basis of culturing neonatal rat cardiomyocytes, the model of hypoxia-reoxygennation was built by using method of Liquid Paraffin covering, the impact of S1P on apoptosis and p-Akt and mitochondrial membrane potential were studied by using method of Propidine Iodide staining and Western blot and Bhodanmine123 staining.
RESULTSSiP could reduce apoptosis rate (P < 0.01) and stabilize the mitochondrial membrane potential (P < 0.05) and improved the level of p-Akt1 (P < 0.01) in hypoxia/reoxygenation cardiomyocytes significantly. But wonnannin could block these effects of S1P partially.
CONCLUSIONSiP can obviously restrain apoptosis in curtured rat neonatal cardiomyocytes during simulated hypoxia/reoxygenation. Stabilization of mitochondrial membrane potential by P13K-AM signaling pathway is likely to play a role in protective action of S1P.

Chinese Medical Journal 2013;(1):55-60
Background In China, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) share susceptibility loci, but different rates of multiple primary cancer and male/female ratio suggest the proportion of familial cancer is not equal. Methods The percent of cases with a positive family history, median onset age, rate of multiple primary cancer, and male/female ratio associated with upper, middle, lower third ESCC and GCA were compared to reveal the proportion of familial cancer. The 7267 subjects analyzed constituted all ESCC and GCA cases in whom the cancer was resected with cure intention between 1970 and 1994 at the 4th Hospital of Hebei Medical University. Results A positive family history for cancer was most often associated with the multiple primary ESCC and/or GCA cases,e.g.with 42% of the males and 59% of the females. For upper, middle, lower third ESCC and GCA,the percent of cases with a positive family history decreased by 38.5%,26.3%,26.5%,and 11.2% in males (P <0.000) and 25.0%,22.3%,23.9%,and 9.8% in females (P <0.0001).Median onset age increased from 49,52,55,to 56 years old in males and from 50,53,55,to 56 years old in females (both P <0.0001) for upper, middle, lower third ESCC and GCA.Male/female ratio increased from 2.2,2.1,2.2,to 6.2:1 for upper, middle, lower third ESCC and GCA (P<0.0001).For upper, middle, lower third ESCC and GCA,the percent of multiple primary cancers decreased from 21.2%,2.3%,2.2%,to 1.5% in males and from 14.3%,2.4%,3.4%,to 3.1% in females. The preponderance of males, smoking, drinking,or onset-age ≥50 years was significantly higher in GCA than in ESCC,and the difference in the rates of multiple primary cancers between the preponderant and the non-preponderant cases was significant in GCA,but not in ESCC,suggesting non-equal requirement for genetic susceptibility when environmental hazards did not exist. Conclusions The proportion of familial cancer in upper gastrointestinal carcinomas decreases by the priamry site of upper, middle, lower third esophagus and gastric cardia.Considering familial and sporadic cancers differ in preventability, screening strategy and recurrence, our findings have basic and clinical implications.

AIM:To make a survey on people suffering trachoma in Gansu province, and to provide evidence for developing trachoma control and prevention therapy.
METHODS: We chose the zone on the basis of relative information. Provincial Office of Blindness Prevention carried out the survey in 3 counties including Tange Township of Wushan, Xiqu Township of Minqin and Hulinjia Township of Jishishan from October 14, 2013 to November 23, 2013. One hundred and fifty primary school students were selected, including 72 boys and 78 girls aging from 5a to 10a with the average age of 7. 5y. The targeted students received the fast trachoma assessment by the adoption of simplified trachoma classification system which was recommended by the World Health Organization.
RESULTS: No case of active trachoma, trachomatous trichiasis and corneal disease were examined among 150 students.
CONCLUSION: The rate of trachoma is low in Gansu province. But we still cannot get the conclusion that there is no epidemic of trachoma in Gansu. And we need to further expand the survey scope to correctly assess the trachoma case and to provide reliable evidence for trachoma prevention and control.

Trachoma, a contagious keratoconjunctivitis ( KC ) , caused by Chlamydia trachomatis infection, is rife in 57 countries in the world at present. The World Health Organization ( WHO) listed the global alliance to eliminate blinding trachoma by 2020 as one of top priorities of its blindness prevention in 1998. A simplified classification system for identifying and naming trachoma, designated by WHO, and the SAFE strategy based on community intervention were extended continuously in the world in 10 years since then. The trachoma prevalence trend has showed a change compared with that in the past. China has launched the blindness prevention action, aimed to eliminate blinding trachoma by 2016. In this paper, we reviews progress in diagnosis, treatment and epidemic of trachoma since the extension of the SAFE strategy.

Abstract?AIM: To investigate the effect of epigallocatechin-3-gallate ( EGCG ) against oxidative stress induced by high glucose in human lens epithelium ( HLE) cells.? METHODS: The HLE cell oxidative damage model induced by high concentration glucose was established, and was intervented with different concentrations of EGCG. Cell viability was determined by MTT assay, cell morphology was investigated by convert microscope, cells apoptosis was assayed by flow cytometry with Hoechst-PI staining. Moreover, the levels of super oxide dismutase ( SOD) , glutathione peroxidase ( GSH-Px) and malondialdehyde ( MDA) in supernatant were also tested after different treatment either with high concentration glucose or with different concentrations of EGCG.?RESULTS: MTT results showed that HLE cells activity increased to 50. 33%± 3. 52% and 63. 33%± 4. 63% after treated with 10 μmol/L and 100 μmol/L EGCG respectively, the difference was statistically significant compared with oxidative injury group(32. 67%±3. 10%)(P<0. 05 ); HLE cells maintained better morphology intervented with EGCG under high glucose conditions, the number of apoptotic cells reduced, SOD and GSH-Px level within HLE cells increased and MDA levels decreased.?CONCLUSION:EGCG plays its strong antioxidant effect by increasing SOD, GSH-Px content and decreasing MDA content in cells, therefore provides a reliable experimental basis for the search for effective prevention and treatment of cataract drug.
