PURPOSE: This study was conducted to compare the rates of industrial accidents in workplaces that adopted the 2011 Workplace Health Promotion Subsidy Scheme before and after the implementation. METHODS: The study analyzed the raw data of industrial accidents of 304 workplaces which received subsidies for health promotion activities in 2011. The raw data covered the period from February 2010 to July 2012, based on the dates of industrial accidents. RESULTS: Workplaces subsidized for health promotion activities reported fewer occurrences in staff injuries and illnesses than before the subsidization, as the total number of industrial accident victims dropped from 0.35 to 0.24. The rate of industrial accidents also dropped from 0.49 to 0.35, with the number of working days decreased from 35,433 to 23.867, about 33%. CONCLUSION: The study showed that financial support for health-promoting activities contributed to the decease in industrial accidents, which is an important indication advocating the need for corporate and government investment on workers health promotion programs. Furthermore, this study is also significant as it is the first research conducted in Korea to examine the impact of a workers health promotion project using a direct indicator, the rate of industrial accidents.

BACKGROUND: Fast eating or overeating can induce gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis. However, the association between gastritis and speed of eating is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine whether eating speed is associated with increased risk of endoscopic erosive gastritis (EEG). METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study involving 10,893 adults who underwent a general health checkup between 2007 and 2009. Two groups, EEG patients and EEG-free patients, were compared by using the t-test and the chi-square test. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between eating speed and EEG. RESULTS: The group with EEG had a higher proportion of males, average age, body mass index, and percentages of current smokers and risky drinkers than those without EEG. After adjusting for anthropometric, social, and endoscopic parameters, the group with the highest eating speed (<5 min/meal) had 1.7 times higher risk for EEG than the group with the lowest eating speed (> or =15 min/meal) (odds ratio, 1.71; 95% confidence interval, 1.20-2.45). CONCLUSION: High eating speed is an independent risk factor for EEG. Our results indicate the need for further studies to clarify the role of eating speed in gastritis.

Congenital neurofibromatosis type 1, or Von Recklinghausen's disease is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by neurofibroma, pigmented skin lesions (Cafe-au-lait macules), iris hamartomas and meningeal tumors, but rarely, by autonomic ganglia tumors, such as pheochromocytomas. We have experienced an intrathoracic and chest wall plexiform neurofibroma intimately contacted with collagenoma-like, dome-shaped skin lesions of type 1 neurofibromatosis, which are relatively rare and interesting, but can be regarded as typical findings in neurofibromatosis. Although intrathoracic neurogenic tumors are not uncommon, cases like ours are interesting, as the feature of collagenoma-like skin neurofibroma was very closely apposited with chest wall neurofibroma. Our case had no aypical features of malignancy and the patient was clinically followed up without recurrence.

Spontaneous rupture of the kidney is a relatively uncommon disease. Although it may occur after trauma to a normal kidney, spontaneous rupture of the kidney is usually associated with some underlying structural abnormality and has occurred with infection, hydronephrosis, and benign or malignant tumors. Recently we experienced a case of spontaneous rupture of the kidney due to renal cell carcinoma in a 46 years old healthy-looking male and reported with a brief literature review.

BACKGROUND: The blind sacroiliac joint (SIJ) block cannot always be performed accurately; it is commonly performed in the office based setting because intraarticular and periarticular injections are effective for SIJ pain. However, knowledge on the surface anatomy of the SIJ is lacking. The purpose of this study was to analyze the surface anatomical location of the posterior-inferior margin of the SIJ. METHODS: After informed consent was obtained, fifty patients undergoing SIJ block in the prone position were examined. The oblique angles where the anterior-inferior margin and the posterior-inferior margin of the SIJ overlap on X-ray were evaluated. In addition, the surface anatomical relationships between the posterior-inferior margin of the SIJ on X-ray and the posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS) and sacral hiatus by palpation were assessed. RESULTS: The oblique angle was 5.4 +/- 2.9degrees. The vertical and transverse distance between the posterior-inferior margin of the SIJ and PSIS were 3.8 +/- 0.8 cm and 0.9 +/- 0.6 cm, respectively. The vertical and transverse distance between the posterior-inferior margin of the SIJ and the midpoint of the sacral hiatus were 3.4 +/- 0.7 cm and 3.9 +/- 0.6 cm, respectively. Only the vertical distance between the posterior-inferior margin of the SIJ and PSIS showed significant difference between the male and the female groups (P = 0.0016). CONCLUSIONS: The measurements in this study can be used as a reference standards for the blind SIJ block.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate bonding efficacy by means of measuring the effect of remained solvent on Degree of conversion(DC) and microTBS and FE-SEM examination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two 2-step total etching adhesives and two single-step self etching adhesives were used in this study. First, volume weight loss of 4 dentin adhesives were measured using weighting machine in process of time in normal conditions and calculate degree of evaporation (DE). Reaction/reference intensity ratio were measured using micro-Raman spectroscopy and calculate DC according to DE. Then 2 experimental groups were prepared according to air-drying methods (under, over) and control group was prepared to manufacturer's instruction. Total 12 groups were evaluated by means of micro tensile bond strength and FE-SEM examination. RESULTS: Degree of evaporation (DE) was increased as time elapsed but different features were observed according to the kind of solvents. Acetone based adhesive showed higher DE than ethanol and butanol based adhesive. Degree of conversion (DC) was increased according to DE except for S3 bond. In microTBS evaluation, bond strength was increased by additional air-drying. Large gaps and droplets were observed in acetone based adhesives by FE-SEM pictures. CONCLUSIONS: Additional air-drying is recommended for single-step self etching adhesive but careful consideration is required for 2-step total etching adhesive because of oxygen inhibition layer. Evaporation method is carefully chose and applied according to the solvent type.

PURPOSE: To investigate the safety and the efficacy of intravesical gemcitabine therapy, we prospectively studied intravesical gemcitabine instillation followed by Bacillus Calmette-Guerin(BCG) instillation for treating the patients who suffer from superficial bladder cancer, and the above method was then compared with conventional BCG instillation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between May 2005 and April 2007, a total of 84 patients were divided into Group I: the patients were treated with a 2-week course of gemcitabine(1,000mg/50ml, 2,000mg/50ml) followed by a conventional 6-week course of BCG, and Group II: the patients were treated by BCG instillation only. Gemcitabine was instilled immediately within 6 hours after complete trans-urethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT) and then this was repeated one week later. BCG instillation was started 2 weeks after TURBT. The complications, recurrence rates, progression rates and recurrence-free period(RFP) were analyzed in both groups. RESULTS: The treatment was well tolerated in all the patients. Most of the complications were self-limiting, and there was no significant difference between the two groups(p=0.379). The recurrence rates of the two groups were 25.6% and 26.7%, respectively(p=0.899). Yet the recurrence-free period(RFP) was significantly longer in Group I(p=0.021). The progression rates of the two groups were 2.6% and 6.7%, respectively(p=0.620). CONCLUSIONS: Intravesical gemcitabine instillation showed the effect to prolong the recurrence-free period for patients with superficial bladder cancer. Further long-term study will be needed.
