Objective To observe the effects of Coptidis Rhizoma on gastrointestinal motility functions, MTL and GAS in spleen-deficiency rats; To explore the dose-effect mechanism of “invigorating stomach” and “spoiling appetite”.Methods Fatigue and troublesome were used to establish exhausted spleen-deficiency models. 60 SD rats were randomly divided into blank control group, model group, positive medicine group, Coptidis Rhizoma high-, medium- and low-dose groups, with 10 rats in each group. Each medication group received relevant medicine for gavage, while the blank control group and model group received normal saline for gavage, once a day for 14 d. The general gastrointestinal motility functions, MTL and GAS of rats in each group were observed. Results Compared with blank control group, the gastric residual rate of model group was significantly higher; small intestinal propulsion rate, MTL, and GAS were significantly lower (P<0.05,P<0.01). Compared with model group, the gastric residual rate in Coptidis Rhizoma low-dose group was significantly lower; small intestinal propulsion rate, MTL and GAS increased significantly (P<0.05,P<0.01); small intestinal propulsion rate and MTL in Coptidis Rhizoma high-dose group were significantly lower (P<0.05).Conclusion High-doseCoptidis Rhizoma leads to “spoiling appetite”, and low-dose Coptidis Rhizoma leads to “invigorating stomach”, which may be related to adjusting gastrointestinal motility directly or adjusting the secretion of gastrointestinal hormones.

Objective To investigate the effects of local mild hypothermia on the expression of EMAP-Ⅱ and proEMAP-Ⅱ after cerebral ischemia and reperfusion in rats and to explore the possible neuroprotection mechanism of mild hypothermia. Methods Forty-four male Wistar rats were divided randomly into a sham-operation group (Sham),a normothermia group (NT) and a hypothermia group (HT).Middle cerebral artery occlusion was performed using Longa's method, and reperfusion was allowed after 2 hours of occlusion.Mild hypothermia (33.0 ± 0.5)℃ for 6 hours was initiated at the start of reperfusion, followed by rewarming.Brains were harvested after 6,12,24,48 and 72 hours of reperfusion and used for HE staining to evaluate cellular apzoptosis and immunohistochemical staining for detecting the expression EMAP-Ⅱ and proEMAP-Ⅱ.Results The expression of EMAP-Ⅱ and proEMAP-Ⅱ in the ischemic penumbra was significant at 6 hours in the normothermia and hypothermia groups. It peaked at 12 hours in the normothermia group and 24 hours in the hypothermia group, and then decreased gradually. At 72 hours the expression of EMAP-Ⅱ and proEMAP-Ⅱ in the ischemic penumbras was very close to that in the sham group.EMAP-Ⅱ-positive cells were significantly fewer in the hypothermia group than in the normothermia group at all time points.ProEMAP-Ⅱ-positive cells were significantly more numerous in the normothermia group than in the hypothermia group at 6,12 and 24 hours. Conclusions Mild hypothermia (33.0 ± 0.5) ℃ has a valid neuroprotective effect which involves reducing EMAP-Ⅱ and proEMAP-Ⅱ expression in the ischemic penumbra and inhibiting apoptosis and inflammatory reactions after cerebral ischemia and reperfusion,at least in rats.

Chinese Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism 2000;0(06):-
The understanding of iron metabolism in humans, especially of its mechanism involved in controlling iron absorption in the proximal small intestine, is of great importance since diseases associated with iron deficiency or overload are very common worldwide. Recent study on hepcidin which is senthesized by liver has showed that this originally identified as a circulating antimicrobial peptide is a putative iron regulatory hormone. It plays a central role in the regulation of small intestine iron absorption and body iron homeostasis. The increased expression of hepcidin in the liver, induced by inflammation, might be an initial cause of the anemia of infection or chronic diseases and the iron-overload diseases might be tightly associated with the decreased hepcidin expression in the liver.

Objective To evaluate the relationship between the carotid atheroscalerosis and coronary artery disease. Methods High frequency ultrasonography was used to examine the carotid artery in seventy two patients who had undergone coronary artery angiography because of acute myocardiac infarction, angina or chest pain. They were divided a group with normal coronary angiography and another group with coronary artery lesion. The latter group included three subgroups according to the number of coronary artery involved: B1 group, B2 group, and B3 group. Scoring of atherosclerosis of the common carotid artery, internal carotid artery and external carotid artery were made with reference to plaques, the intima media thickness (IMT) and the V max of blood flow of the carotid artery as demonstrated by high frequency ultrasonograply. Results The IMT of the group with coronary lesion was significantly higher than that of the normal group ( P

ObjectiveTo assess the left ventricular systolic and diastolic function in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM) using quantitative tissue velocity imaging(QTVI) ,and to provide reliable evidence for early diagnosis and prevention in diabetic cardiomyopathy.MethodsOne hundred and twenty one type 2 DM patients were divided into two DM 1 groups (61 patients without microangiopathy) and DM2 group (60 patientswith microangiopathy).Fifty normal subjects were enrolled as control group. The index of echocardiography, including the LVEF, FS and mitral peak flow velocity during early and late diastole (E/A) were measured by conventional echocardiography, and the ratio of E/A was calculated. The average peak velocities of six LV wall sites at mitral annuluses during systole, early and late diastole(MEm, MEm, MAm) were measured by QTVI, and the ratio of MEm/MAm was calculated. Results Compared with the normal group, MSm ([7.13 ± 1.42])cm/s vs.([6.49 ± 1.29]cm/s), MEm ([6.22 ± 1.39]cm/s) vs.([4.53 ± 0.94]cm/s) and MEm/MAm ([0.79 ±0.17]vs.[0.59 ± 0.19]) in DM patients were significantly decreased(F = 5.32,8.01 ,4.89 ; Ps <0.05).There was no significant differences among three groups in the comparisons of LVEF ([67.45 ±5.47]%),([65.91 ±4.83]%),([68.01 ±6.16]%) and FS([38.84±4.23]%,[37.82±5.43]%),([40.17 ± 4.53]%)(F = 1.89 and 2.46 respectively, P > 0.05) .In addition, E/A of DM2 group (0.71 ±0.21)decreased more dramatically than DM1 and normal (0.91 ± 0.18,1.02 ± 0.24)(F = 4.71, P < 0.05)ConclusionCompared with EF,FS and E/A obtained by conventional echocardiography,QTVI-derived MSm,MEm and MEm/MAm are more sensitive indexes to defect early LV dysfunction. The functional disorder appears early than microangiopathy, and the left ventricular systolic and diastolic function gets worse along with the microangiopathy.
