1.FOLFOX-4 Combination Chemotherapy as a First-line Treatment in Patients with Advanced Gastric Cancer.
Korean Journal of Medicine 2012;82(1):35-36
The FOLFOX-4 regimen as first-line treatment in patients with advanced gastric cancer has not evidence of category 1 for prolongation of survival in patients with advanced gastric cancer. Therefore, the use is preferred in the second line. But, especially in elderly patients, FOLFOX regimen was active and well tolerated with lower toxicities. Further phase III study is warranted to evaluate the evidence for prolongation of survival in elderly patients or combination therapy with target agents in advanced gastric cancer.

Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2008;28(2):182-186
The comprehensive treatment of colorectal cancer has been quickly progressing in recent years, and TCM treatment plays an active role in the postoperative management of colorectal cancer. In this paper, the progress of postoperative management of colorectal cancer with integrative medicine was reviewed to provide a reference for guiding the researches on this topic.

OBJECTIVETo observe and compare the therapeutic effect of Jianpi Huoxue herbs (JPHXH) combined with chemotherapy (CT) in treating post-operational colonic cancer patients with Pi deficiency Syndrome (PDS).
METHODSAdopting randomized control trial method, 64 patients were divided into two groups. The treated group (n = 43) received JPHXH plus CT and the control group ( n = 21 ) received CT alone. A treatment course of 3 months was applied to both groups. Therapeutic effect, changes of PDS and incidence of adverse reaction in the two groups were observed.
RESULTSThe tumor remission rate in the treated group and the control group was 39.5 % and 33.3 %, respectively. The effective rate on PDS in the treated group and the control group was 72.1% and 19.0%, respectively, showing significant difference (P < 0.01). The incidence of adverse reaction was lower in the treated group than that in the control group (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONJPHXH is effective in treating post-operational colonic cancer patients with PDS and relieving the adverse reaction of chemotherapy to certain extent.

PURPOSE: Fluoropyrimidine-based combination chemotherapy, in combination with either oxaliplatin or irinotecan, has demonstrated efficacy and tolerability in treatment of advanced colorectal cancer (ACC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2006 and December 2007, a total of 478 ACC patients were treated with combination chemotherapy in first-line settings. Combination therapies included: 5-fluorouracil, folinic acid plus oxaliplatin (FOLFOX, n=172), 5-fluorouracil, folinic acid plus irinotecan (FOLFIRI, n=95), capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (XELOX, n=155), and capecitabine plus irinotecan (XELIRI, n=56). FOLFOX and FOLFIRI were repeated every 2 weeks, whereas XELOX and XELIRI were repeated every 3 weeks until occurrence of disease progression or unacceptable toxicity, or until a patient chose to discontinue treatment. RESULTS: The median age was 58 years (range, 19 to 84 years) and the median chemotherapy durations for FOLFOX, FOLFIRI, XELOX, and XELIRI were 4.9, 4.5, 5.7, and 5.4 months, respectively. Combination chemotherapy regimens were generally well tolerated. The estimated median progression-free-survival (PFS) for all patients was 6.8 months (95% confidence interval, 6.3 to 7.3 months). No statistically significant difference in PFS was found among regimens used as first-line chemotherapy. Sixty percent (n=290) of patients received second or further lines of therapy after failure. CONCLUSION: Fluoropyrimidine-based combination chemotherapy regimens appear to be equally active and tolerable as first-line therapy for ACC.

Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2009;29(1):23-25
OBJECTIVETo objectively assess the influence of Xiaoliu Baofei Pill (XBP) combined with chemotherapy on quality of life (QOL) of patients with stage III-IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
METHODSForty NSCLC patients were equally randomized into 2 groups, the treated group treated with XBP plus chemotherapy, and the control group treated with chemotherapy alone. Patients' QOL was assessed by Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT-L) before and after treatment.
RESULTSThe scores of the physical condition in the treated group was relatively stable while it lowered significantly as time went by in the control group, significant difference was shown as compared with before treatment and with that in the treated group at the same time points (P < 0.05); scores of the mood condition, the function conditions and additional concerned condition were improved gradually from the 3rd collection in the treated group, but decreased in the control group, although some improvement of mood and function conditions had revealed temporarily in the early stage of treatment. Comparison between groups showed significant difference (P < 0.05). Besides, no significant change was found in domains of patient-doctor relation and society/family condition in both groups.
CONCLUSIONXBP combined with chemotherapy can obviously improve the QOL of advanced NSCLC patients.

OBJECTIVETo observe the clinical efficacy of TCM with supplementing Qi, nourishing Yin and clearing heat principle (SQNYCH) combined with chemotherapy in treating myelocytic leukemia.
METHODSOne hundred and fourteen patients were randomly divided into the treated group (n = 68) and the control group (n = 46). To the treated group, SQNYCH was applied as the basic treatment, with combined chemotherapeutic protocol, using DA, HA and IA, to induce remission, and to the M3 patients, all-trans retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide were given. As for patients in the control group, only western medicine was administered.
RESULTSIn the treated group 49 patients (72.1%) were completely remitted, 9 (13.2%) partially remitted and the total remission rate being 85.3%, which was significantly different from that in the control group. After treatment, the blood and bone marrow picture were obviously improved in both groups, but the increase of hemoglobin and platelet were better in the treated group than in the control group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Immune functions were enhanced in both groups, but the elevation of CD4, CD4/CD8 ratio and NK cells were higher in the treated group than in the control group (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONApplication of SQNYCH principle in treating acute myelocytic leukemia could elevate the clinical efficacy, which is of great value in clinical practice.
