Objective To obtain the normal value of blink reflex(BR) in the elderly. Methods With clinical electrophysiological diagnostic technique, the orbital nerve was stimulated with electric current to elicit blink reflex in an elderly group (30 subjects, 60 sides) and an adult group (29 subjects, 58 sides). Results For the early response R 1 of BR in the elderly, the latency and amplitude were (10 28?0 39) ms,162 88 ?V. For the late response R 2 and R 2',the latency was (32 86?2 81) ms and (33 33?2 90) ms respectively; the amplitude was 210 72 ?V and 156 32 ?V respectively The difference of the latency between the elderly and adult was statistically significant. Conclusions This study indicates that BR measurement is a simple and harmless technique. The latency of BR was prolonged in the aged.

Chinese Journal of Immunology 1986;0(04):-
The suppressive effects of T. reglii on mouse cellular and humoral immune responses were studied. Lymphocyte proliferation effect induced with ConA,and PFC and OHS reactions with TD Ag(TNP-SRBC)were effectively suppressed by the drug. But the similar effects on LPS and TI Ag (TNP-SRBC) have not been found. The results shown that target cells of T. reglii effects may be T lymphocytes and the drug may not have a direct effect on B cells. The drug also shown a suppressive effect on IL-2 production by mouse spleen cells. The phenomenon suggests that the suppressive effects of T. reglii on humoral immune response may be indirectly mediated through suppressing helper T cells.

Objective To explore the relationship of plasma level of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) with cardiovascular risk, the severity of coronary heart disease(CHD),and the short-term prognosis in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods 154 patients with type 2 diabetes,of them 95 cases complicated with CHD and 65 with hyper-tension were selected in this study. The CHD patients were diveded into 3 groups: AMI(n=32), UAP(n=33) and SAP(n=30). The relationship of the plasma BNP levels with cardiovascular risks, with each coronary heart disea-ses,were observed. The patients were followed up for 6 months to study the predicting role of BNP on the death in pa-tients accompanied with CHD. Results The plasma BNP level was (397.34±217.79) ng/L, which was correlated with age, CRP, hypertension and CHD (r=0.631,0.672, 0.762,0.857, P<0.05 for each);the plasma BNP levels increased with age(r=0.896,P<0.01):(57.6±12.3) ng/L in patients <50 years old,(146.2±53.4)ng/L in patients 50≤and < 59 years old, (388.4±67.5) ng/in patients 60≤and < 69 years old, and (423.8±132.6) ng/L in patients≥70 years old (P<0.01 or P<0.05). The plasma BNP levels, was higher in patients with hyper-tension than that in patients without hypertension [(314.7±125.3) ng/L vs (136.8±98.7) ng/L, P<0.01];Higher in patients with CHD than that in patients without CHD [(425.03±200.80)ng/L vs (37.64±21.57) ng/L,P<0.01)]. The short-term prognosis of patients with CHD was correlated with the levels of BNP, and BNP levels≥485 ng/L may be an independent predicting factor for cardiac death within one month. Conclusions Plas-ma levels of BNP were associated with some cardiovascular risks, which may be one of biomarkers for cardiovascular risks in patient complicated with CHD.

The mechanisms of general anesthesia, which was introduced about 170 years ago, remain poorly under- stood. Even less well understood are the effects of general anesthesia on the human body. Recently we identified 18 G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) genes of Daphnia pulex, an invertebrate model organism. Phylogenetic analysis identified these genes to be the homologs of the human γ-aminobutyric acid, type B (GABAB) receptor, metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR), adrenergic receptor, serotonin (5-HT) receptor, dopamine receptor and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR). Using reverse transcription and quantitative PCR techniques, we systematically measured the effects of propofol, etomidate and ethanol on these 18 GPCR mRNA expressions in Daphnia pulex.

Objective To investigate the influence of low calcium dialysate (DCa1.25) and midodrine hydrochloric (MHC) on blood pressure in hemodialysis patients. Methods Dialysate calcium concentration was changed from 1.5% (DCa1.5) to 1.25% in patients with hypercalcaemia pre- or post-dialysis.For patients with intradialytic hypotension(IDH), pre-dialysis antihypertensive drugs were ceased. If that didn′t work, MHC 2.5 or 5 mg was administered to them 30 minutes before dialysis were ceased.MHC was also administered to patients who had not taken antihypertensive drugs. The blood pressure (BP) and blood volume were recorded during dialysis. UCG and autonomic nerves function test including BP supine and standing test and sustained hand-grip test were measured as well. Results Twenty-one hemodialysis patients were involved in this study including male 9 and female 12. The average age was (54.4?14.2) years old,the time on dialysis (33.04?30.1) months. When DCa1.5 was changed to DCa1.25, 9 cases (42.9%) could maintain stable BP, but IDH occurred in 10 patients(47.6%) with symptoms such as swirl, sweat or cramp, one with lower extremities cramp and one with heart discomfort but without IDH. Patients with IDH had higher proportion of abnormal BP supine and standing tests compared with patients without IDH(50% vs. 0%, P

Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin 1987;0(01):-
AIM To study the effect of neferine on intracellular adriamycin(ADM) accumulation in MCF-7/Adr cell line. METHODS The cytotoxic effect was determined by MTT assay. The intracellular ADM concentration was assayed by HPLC. RESULTS Neferine(Nef) decreased the IC 50 of ADM to MCF-7/Adr cells but increased the intracellular concentration of ADM. CONCLUSION The mechanism of the MDR reversal effect of Nef is associated with the increase of the intracellular accumulation of anticancer drug.
