PURPOSE: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the workplace bullying experience of Korean nurses. METHODS: Participants were twenty current or former hospital nurses who had experienced workplace bullying. Data were collected through focus group and individual in-depth interviews from February to May, 2015. Theoretical sampling method was applied to the point of theoretical saturation. Transcribed interview contents were analyzed using Corbin and Strauss's grounded theory method. RESULTS: A total of 110 concepts, 48 sub-categories, and 17 categories were identified through the open coding process. As a result of axial coding based on the paradigm model, the central phenomenon of nurses' workplace bullying experience was revealed as 'teaching that has become bullying', and the core category was extracted as 'surviving in love-hate teaching' consisting of a four-step process: confronting reality, trial and error, relationship formation, and settlement. The relationship formation was considered to be the key phase to proceed to the positive settlement phase, and the participants utilized various strategies such as having an open mind, developing human relationships, understanding each other in this phase. CONCLUSION: The in-depth understanding of the workplace bullying experience has highlighted the importance of effective communication for cultivating desirable human relationships between nurses.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) 16/18 is a causative agent of uterine cervical carcinoma. HPV 16/18 can alter cell cycle regulation through apoptosis. Bcl-2 is an important regulatory gene of apoptosis. A study was done to evaluate the relation between HPV 16/18 and bcl-2 and apoptosis in 21 cases of carcinoma in-situ (CIS), 5 cases of microinvasive carcinoma and 23 cases of invasive squamous cell carcinoma. HPV 16/18 was detected by hybrid capture system (HCS), bcl-2 protein by immunohistochemical method and apoptosis by using the hematoxylin-eosin stained slide. The results were as follows: Expression of the bcl-2 protein was 43% (9/21) in CIS and 26% (6/23) in invasive carcinoma. Expression of the bcl-2 protein was 42% (5/12) in CIS with HPV 16/18 infection, 44% in CIS without HPV 16/18 infection, 20% (2/10) in invasive carcinoma with HPV 16/18 infection and 31% (4/13) in invasive carcinoma without HPV 16/18 infection. Mean apoptotic index (mAI) was 3.36 in CIS, 5.23 in microinvasive and 6.25 in invasive carcinoma. mAI was 3.66 in CIS with HPV 16/18 infection, 2.86 in CIS without HPV 16/18 infection, 6.18 in invasive carcinoma with HPV 16/18 infection and 6.30 in invasive carcinoma without HPV 16/18 infection. Based on these results, we conclude that there are no correlation between HPV infection and bcl-2, and between HPV infection and apoptosis in invasive and in situ carcinoma of the uterine cervix, and apoptosis is increased according to tumor progression.

PURPOSE: This research aimed to investigate the effects of a cognitive rehearsal program (CRP) on workplace bullying among nurses. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was performed. Participants were 40 nurses working in different university hospitals in B city, South Korea. The experimental group was provided with a 20-hour CRP comprising scenarios on bullying situations, standard communication, and role-playing. To evaluate effects of the CRP, we measured interpersonal relationships, workplace bullying, symptom experience, and turnover intention at preand post-intervention. Follow-up effect was measured in the experimental group only at 4 weeks after the intervention. RESULTS: After the intervention, there were significant differences in interpersonal relationships (F=6.21, p=.022) and turnover intention (F=5.55, p=.024) between experimental and wait-list groups. However, there was no significant difference in workplace bullying or symptom experience between the 2 groups. The beneficial effects on interpersonal relationships and turnover intention lasted at least up to 4 weeks after CRP. CONCLUSION: The CRP for workplace bullying improves interpersonal relationships and decreases turnover intention. So it can be utilized as one of the personal coping strategies to reduce the the turnover among nurses. Further studies on the effects of unit- or hospital-based CRP and on the long-term effects of CRP are necessary.

This study was undertaken to know the extent of apoptosis, expression of bcl-2 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in uterine cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN; 15 cases) and invasive carcinoma (27 cases) and to evaluate them as a prognostic marker. Apoptosis was analysed by using the in situ apoptosis detection kit and bcl-2 and PCNA were detected by the immunohistochemical method. The results were as follows: Apoptotic indices (AI) in the invasive carcinoma (mean: 4.3) were 10-times higher than that in the CIN (mean: 0.43). Bcl-2 was expressed 60% of the cases in the dysplastic cells of the CIN II and CIN III, 33.3% of cases in the invasive carcinoma and not expressed in the CIN I except basal cells. The expression of the PCNA was increased by the grades of CIN and was strong in invasive carcinoma. The mean survival time of the patient with invasive carcinoma was significantly decreased in the higher AI index (above 4.3) than in the lower AI index (below 4.3). There was no significant correlation between the extent of apoptosis and the expression of bcl-2. According to the above results, AI are able to be used as an independent prognostic marker in the invasive cervical carcinoma, and bcl-2 and PCNA have an important role in the tumorigenesis of uterine cervical carcinoma.

Objective To investigate the clinical effect of mild hypothermia on neonatal bilirubin encephalopathy, and the value of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/CT and amplitude integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) for diagnosis and evaluation of curative effect. Methods From May, 2013 to December, 2014, 29 newborns with bilirubin encephalopathy were divided into conventional group (n=15) and mild hypothermia group (n=14). The conventional group received conventional therapy, and the other group received mild hypothermia in addition. The aEEG and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) were measured before and after treatment, as well as the glucose metabolism rate with 18F-FDG PET/CT after treatment. Results The NSE was lower after treatment in both groups (t>9.670, P<0.001), and was lower in the mild hypothermia group than in the conventional group (F=46.146, P<0.001). After treatment, sleep-wake cycle (SWC), epileptiform activity and the degree of abnormality were obviously improved (P<0.05), and were better in the mild hypothermia group than in the conventional group (P<0.05). The cerebral glucose metabolism rate was significantly better in the mild hypo-thermia group than in the conventional group (t>2.943, P<0.01). The cerebral glucose metabolism rate was negatively correlated with aEEG and NSE (r>0.640, P<0.05). Conclusion Mild hypothermia therapy could further promote the energy metabolism of brain cells in neonatal bilirubin encephalopathy. 18F-FDG PET/CT and aEEG can be used for early diagnosis and therapeutic evaluation.

Retrospective study was conducted to analyze the efficacies of using round hepatic and falciform ligaments in acute abdominal repair for 22 cases between December 2010 to March 2013.There was no occurrence of perioperative mortality.Twenty patients (90％) were followed up for 3 to 24 months.All cases recovered favorably and no complications of common bile duct stricture,bile leakage,postoperative hemorrhage or pancreatic fistula occurred.The anatomic and morphological advantages of pedicled ligamentum teres hepatic and falciform ligaments have made it a high-quality autologous biological repair material applicable for a variety of acute abdominal repairs.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the perceived nursing work environment (NWE) on person-centered critical care nursing (PCCN) practices among nurses in intensive care units (ICUs).METHODS: A cross-sectional research design was adopted for this study; participants were 126 ICU nurses working in five hospitals in B city. From December 2018 to February 2019, a survey questionnaire on NWE and PCCN were conducted. The collected data were analyzed with a multiple hierarchical regression analysis.RESULTS: The mean score for NWE was 2.98±0.39. Among the factors, basic work system was the highest (3.39±0.41), followed by leadership of the head nurse (3.31±0.55), interpersonal relationships (2.77±0.62), and institutional support (2.58±0.52). The mean score for PCCN was 3.52±0.46. Among the factors, comfort was the highest (3.77±0.62), followed by respect (3.55±0.56), compassion (3.43±0.60), and individuality (3.38±0.56). The interpersonal relationship (β =.31, p=.001) and the number of patients per shift (β =−.23, p=.005) had a significant effect on PCCN, accounting for 25.9% of the total variance.CONCLUSION: These results suggest that it is necessary to enhance the relationship-oriented culture and reduce the workload of nurses in order to improve the quality of nursing care in ICUs.
