BACKGROUND: Smoking increases the risk of respiratory, cardiac diseases and cancer. This study is to ascertain the relationship between passive smoking, the modes of residence, its location and the immunoglobulin values as well as the eosinophil counts in relation to child patients suffering from bronchial or cardiac asthma. METHODS: The research was conducted at a general hospital with cooperation of 242 patients who had been hospitalized 1991 through 1995. We compared the average values of immunoglobulin between the groups of exposed and non-exposed to smoking by T-test. A same work for residential modes was done by T-tests, while the data regarding the residing locality were processed by ANOVA. RESULTS: Each values of TEC, IgE, IgA, and IgM in both groups has been analysed but spelling no significant differences. The group residing in apartments showed lower value of IgM than those of flats. CONCLUSIONS: The reason the IgM value of apartments is lower than that of flats is due to the difference of living quarters. This signifies the modes of residence may as well affect the IgE value.

A clinico-pathological study on the true skin appendage tumors was carried on the accumulated cases during pat 11 years from 1976 to 1986 years in the Department of Pathology, Seoul National University Hospital. The results was as follows; 1) Among various benign skin appendage tumors pilomatricoma was the most common benign tumor consisting of 72 out of 244 cases (30.1%), followed by dermoid cyst 48 cases (20.0%), steatocystoma multiplex 37 cases (15.5%), syringoma 33 cases (13.8%) and trichilemmal cyst 19 cases (0.8%). Other benign skin appendage tumors were rarely noted under 3%. Sebaceous carcinoma was most common among malignant skin appendage tumors and no malignant tumor of sweat gland origin was noted. 2) The sex ratio of male to female of the pilomatricoma was 1 : 2.6 and on the face, neck, and extremeties in 1st and 2nd decades. The sex ratio of dermoid cyst was 1 : 1.2 on the face in 1st decade. The sex ratio of steatocystoma multiplex was 1 : 1.9 and on the trunk in 3rd decade. The sex ratio of syringoma was 1 : 7 and on the face in 5th decade. The sex ratio of trichilemmoma was 1 : 1.6 and on the trunk in 5th decade. Other tumors were not avaiable for analysis because of small number. The sex ratio of sebaceous carcinoma was 1 : 2 and on the eyelid in 6th decade

Fetal echocardiography is used by means of decleration of fetal cardiac anaztomy, to estabilish the diagnosis of congenital heart disease in utero. We attemped fetal echocardiography to ninty three pregnant women after intra uterine period 24 weeks, and estimated cardiac circumference, cardiac axis, pulmonary atery root diameter, arortic root diameter, diameter of inferior vena cava, diameter of superior ve studied how these estimates associate with following gestational na cava, and fractional shortening of ventricles. We ages. Cardiac axis was on the average 37.28 degree and cardiac apex was located in anterior left side of chest area. Aortic root diameter was 0.227 GA-0.043mm (GA=gestational age) at systolic phase, 0.203 GA+0.421mm at diastolic phase. Pulmonaly root diameter was 0.271 GA-0.029mm at systolic phase, 0.251 GA-0.067mm at diastolic phase. Thoracic aorta diameter was 0.195 GA+0.109mm at systolic phase, 0.198 GA+0.794mm at diastolic phase. Fractional shortening was 0.24 (1 Standard Deviation=0.11) in right ventricle, 0.23(1 SD=0.154) at left ventricle, and so ratio of right and left ventricle was 1.04(1 SD=0.51). Once normal fetal cardiac anatomy is understood, structural defects and/or alternation of function can be evaluated antenatally.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cytotoxicity of orthodontic bands in vitro and in vivo.4 types of orthodontic bands were applied to cultured fibroblast and the supermatants were injected into dorsal subcutaneous tissue of mice. In vitro, the cytotoxixity was evaluated by an MTT assay after 2 and 6days.In vivo, the histopathologic observation was performed 2 days after injection. The results were: 1. The cell viability was significantly decreased in the group added phosphoric acid in comparison to control group, but there was not any significance among the experimental group after 2 days. 2. Cell viability decreased in the high Ni containing group after 6 days. 3. The histopathological finding was that the Cr-containing group showed severe infiltration of inflammatory cells and muscular destruction.

Two cases of malignant melanomas of the choroid were reported. The first case was 43 years old male. The tumor was found to be a mixed type with heavy pigmentation. The second case was 3 years old girl. The tumor cells infiltrated the sclera and the optic nerve with complete destruction of the choroid and extension to the extra-ocular portion was noted without encapsulation. The tumor was composed of spindle A type cells with scanty pigmentation. This second case was interesting due to the reported rare incidence of malignant melanoma in childhood. The statistics in Japan point to the relativelyfrequent occurrence in childhood suggesting the racial differences in the frequency of malignant melanomas in childhood.

Gold fishes were used to determine exophthalmos-inhibitory effect of anti-EPS serum. Anti-EPS Serum was obtained by repeated injection of serum from a patient of malignant exophthalmos to a guinea pig. The exophthalmos-inhibitory effect on fish was determined by measuring the intercorneal distance of fishes by the use of a micrometer before and after the injection of sera, and the percentage in that distance were calculated. The responsiveness of fishes was partly controlled by the injections of normal guinea pig serum and the serum from a patient of endocrine exophthalmos. The injections of the serum from the patient provoked exophthalmos. The injections of the serum from the patient, followed by the injections of normal serum of guinea pig provoked no exophthalmos. The injections of the patient's serum followed by injections of antiserum of guinea pig resulted in marked enophthalmos. These results suggest that the normal guinea pig serum and the antiserum from the guinea pig contains exophthalmos-inhibitory factor, and that this effect was greater in the serum treated by patient's serum.

Expression of MHC class II molecule by retinal pigment epithelial cells and the interaction of the cell with extracellular matrix molecules involve in the pathogenesis of proliferative vitreoretinopathy and chorioretinitis. In this study interferon-gammainduced the expression of MHC class II molecules on RPEJ cells. Extracellular matrix molecules increased the interferon-gamma-i n d u c e d expression of MHC class II molecules. TGF-beta2 inhibited the interferon-gammainduced expression of MHC class II molecules. However, there was no significant effect on such inhibitory function according to the types of extracellular matrix molecules. Blocking the autocrine effect of TGF-beta2 by the specific antisense oligonucleotides decreased its inhibitory function. PLC-gamma1-specific antisense oligonucleotide inhibited the effect of TGF-beta2, which suggests that PLC-gamma1 involves in the signal transduction of TGF-beta2 on the expression of MHC class II molecules. In conclusion, the present study provides further understandings to the previous knowledge of pathogenesis of immunologic retinal disorders.
