2.Ultrastructural Studies of Aortic Endothelial Injury and Regeneration.

Author performed this experiment to define the most important factor preventing the intimal thickening. An endothelium of abdominal aorta in the rat was denuded by two different wires having same caliver. The degree of injury was limited to the endothelial cells in one, and extended to the internal elastic lamina in another. The results showed that at 72 hours, in the case of superficial injury, the entire injury site was covered by new regenerating cells, but in the case of disruption of the internal elastic lamina, the migrating smooth muscle cell completely reached into the intima and resulted in intemal thickening. Similar findings persisted to 1 week later. Above results suggest the most important factor preventing the intimal thickening in endothelial injury is the depth of the injury which limited within the endothelial cells without extending into the internal elastic lamina and medial smooth muscle cells.

3.Molecular Genetic Study for FMR-1 Gene in Autistic Children.

OBJECTIVES: To elucidate an association of the fragile X syndrome with autism, Southern blot analysis was performed in 66 autistic children aged from 2 years to 11 years. METHODS: Subjects were 66 autistic children with of autistic disorder diagnosed by DSM-IV criteria and Childhood Autism Rating Scale-Korean version. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and DNA was used to detect a FMR (Fragile Mental Retardation)-1 gene. Xho/PstI probes and two restriction enzymes (EcoRI, EagI)were used for Southern blot analysis. RESULTS: There were one boy with a methylated mosaic pattern and 3 boys and 2 girls with an unmethylated premutation band. But there was no full mutation pattern. CONCLUSION: Although the possibility of the relationship between autistic disorder and FMR-1 gene has been suggested, the results from this study do not provide any definite association of FMR-1 gene with autism in autistic children.

4.Analysis of Recent Four Years' Cross-Matching Tests of One Commercial Laboratory.

The cross-matching test, an essential pre-transfusion test, is usually performed using only a segment of a blood bag and a recipient's blood sample at a commercial laboratory. We analyzed cross-matching test results obtained at LabGenomics laboratory, client of which were mainly small- and medium-sized medical clinics. Data for a total of 12,902 cross-matching tests referred from January 2012 to December 2015 were analyzed for incompatibility in the results and trends based on the distribution of medical clinics. Medical clinics were categorized as nursing home, obstetrics and gynecology, plastic surgery, dental clinic, orthopedic surgery, and others. Incompatible results were observed for 35 cases (1.09%) in 2012, 22 cases (0.68%) in 2013, 31 cases (1.02%) in 2014, and 41 cases (1.20%) in 2015. Overall, 55.4% of referrals came from a nursing home, 6.4% from obstetrics and gynecology, 4.4% from plastic surgery, 20.0% from dental clinic, 5.9 % from orthopedic surgery, and 7.9% from others. Further studies are required to evaluate the efficacy of cross-matching test results and its relationship with transfusion requirements.

5.Contralateral Inferior Oblique Overaction after Inferior Oblique Recession in Unilateral Moderate Primary Inferior Oblique Overaction.

PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence rate of inferior oblique muscle overaction (IOOA) in the contralateral eye and the effect of inferior oblique (IO) muscle recession of the contralateral eye in the patients who received IO muscle recession for unilateral moderate (+2 or +3) primary IOOA. METHODS: Medical records of 88 patients with unilateral primary IOOA who underwent unilateral IO muscle recession were retrospectively reviewed and observed during a follow-up period of more than 1 year. Graded recession of the IO muscle was performed according to the degree of IOOA. If postoperative IOOA was below +1, the surgery was considered successful. If IOOA in the contralateral eye was more than +2 after surgery, the IOOA was considered to have occurred. RESULTS: In cases where IOOA was +2 and +3 before the surgery, the success rate was 98.2% and 100%, respectively, showing an overall success rate of 98.8%. The incidence of contralateral IOOA after recession of the unilateral IO muscle was 24.1% in the +2 group and 16.6% in the +3 group with an overall incidence rate of 21.6% and when the IO muscle recession of the contralateral eye was performed, the success rate was 100%. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of contralateral IOOA was 21.6% after the unilateral IO muscle recession in moderate unilateral primary IOOA. A satisfactory outcome was obtained through an additional IO muscle recession in the contralateral eye.

6.Age-related Circulating Inflammatory Markers and Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Korean Women.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the age-related changes of cardiovascular disease risk factors and inflammatory markers in non-obese Korean women. Subjects were 112 women over 20 years old with body mass index (BMI) less than 30 kg/m2 and were divided into 3 groups (< 40 years, 40~59 years, > or = 60 years). Mean weight and BMI in the oldest group were significantly higher than those in the other 2 younger groups (P <0.05). Mean total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A1 ratio (BAR) in the oldest group were significantly higher than those in the youngest group (P <0.05), and mean HDL-cholesterol of the oldest group was significantly lower than that of the youngest group (P <0.05). The older-aged group showed significantly higher mean values of atherogenic index (AI) and LDL/HDL ratio (P <0.05) than the respective younger-aged group, and AI was significantly correlated with age, nitric oxide and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (P <0.01). In addition, mean vascular cell adhesion molecule-l (VCAM-1) tended to be higher in the older-aged group than the younger group. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha, a proinflammatory maker, was significantly positively correlated with serum homocysteine, a cardiovascular disease risk factor (P <0.01). In addition, a significantly positive correlation was observed between C-reactive protein and BAR (P <0.01). Overall results suggested that the aging might affect the increase of cardiovascular disease risk factors including the serum lipid profiles, weight and BMI, and age-related increases of weight and BMI might play a role in changes in certain biomarkers of inflammation.

7.A Case of Intraocular Thelasia Callipaeda Infestation.

PURPOSE: We report a case of intraocular Thelazia callipaeda infestation in a patient with panuveitis who had a successful recovery after pars plana vitrectomy. METHODS: A 73-year-old female patients complained of a floating sensation and gradually decreasing visual acuity in her right eye. On slit lamp examination, severe intraocular inflammatory reaction was observed. Fundus examination revealed severe vitreous haze with mobile linear structure. Three-port pars plana vitrectomy was performed and then the worm was removed. RESULTS: The worm was confirmed to be Thelazia callipaeda. At postoperative 2 months, the patient's visual acuity was 0.6 and intraocular pressure 14 mmHg. There was no evidence of intraocular inflammatory reaction. CONCLUSIONS: Thelazia callipaeda usually lie in the conjunctival sac or lacrimal apparatus, causing ocular surface disease, but intraocular infestation rarely occurs. If intraocular infestation does occur, early surgical removal should be performed.

8.Effect of Resuscitation with High Concentration Oxygen on a Rat Model of Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to determine whether any features of apoptosis would occur in the established model of cerebral hypoxia-ischemia in neonatal rats. It was also undertaken to evaluate the effect of post-insult hyperoxia on hypoxic ischemic cerebral injury. METHODS: Seven-day-old neonatal rats underwent unilateral carotid artery dissection followed by 2 hours of hypoxia. To this end rat pups, allocated into 2 groups, were resuscitated with high concentration O2(>FiO2 95%) or room air for a 1-hour period. All of them were killed at 3 days after the above procedures. Their brains were perfusion fixed and removed to examine tissue damage by light microscope and apoptosis by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated dUTP- biotin nick end labeling(TUNEL) reactivity. RESULTS: The result demonstrates that hypoxia-ischemia model induces tissue damage and TUNEL. Post-insult exposure to high reactivity concentration O2 does not aggravate hypoxic-ischemic cerebral injury 3 days after the insult but increases TUNEL reactivity in injured tissue. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that many cells die by apoptosis following hypoxia-ischemia in neonatal brain and resuscitation with high concentration O2 seems to provide an adverse effect over a brain injury by induction of apoptosis.

9.Clinical Implications of the Expression of Survivin and p53 in Superficial Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Bladder.

PURPOSE: The prognostic value of p53 remains controversial in transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder. Survivin, an inhibitor of apoptosis, is expressed in many human cancers. Recent studies have reported increased expression of survivin in superficial transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder. We investigated the expression of survivin and p53 and the clinical implications of this expression in superficial transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining of paraffin sections using a monoclonal antibody for survivin and p53 was performed in 82 cases of superficial transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder. Correlations between the expression of survivin and p53 and clinicopathological features, such as age, multiplicity of tumor, size, recurrence, and progression, were examined. RESULTS: Among 82 cases, positive survivin expression (greater than 20%) was observed in 59 cases. Positive p53 expression (greater than 20%) was observed in 46 cases. There were no significant differences in age, gender, multiplicity, tumor size, tumor grade, pT stage, recurrence, or progression-free survival between p53-positive and p53-negative groups (p>0.05). Also, there were no significant differences in age, gender, multiplicity, tumor size, tumor grade, or pT stage between survivin-positive and survivin-negative groups (p>0.05). However, recurrent-free and progression-free survivals were significantly lower in the survivin-positive group than in the survivin-negative group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The expression of survivin can be recommended as a useful marker for predicting disease recurrence and progression. Survivin may be superior to p53 as a prognostic factor in superficial transitional cell carcinoma of bladder.
