BACKGROUND: The positive reactions of carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) show varying degrees in the tissue of all sweat gland neoplasms by immunohistochemistry. The CEA secreted from sweat glands presents a high value, compared with that of serum. OBJECTIVE: The study was to evaluate the sweat CEA value in relation to serum CEA value by sex, smoking status and blood type in healthy subjects. METHOD: Fifty-two healthy subjects(M : 43, F :9) aged 21-30, participated in the study. 2ml sweat was collected from the face and chest after intense exercises and 3ml blood was collected from their antecubital veins. Roche Core CEA enzyme immunoassay was used for the measurement of sweat and serum CEA. RESULTS: Sweat CEA values were 102.0+4100.5ng/ml in males and 70.6+458.5ng/ml in females, with their mean valueof 96.6+/-94.9ng/ml. Sweat CEA values were 108.3+/-103.5ng/ml in 27 smokers and 83.9+/-84.8ng/ml in 25 nonsmokers(p>0.05, t-test). Sweat CEA values were higher among the males and the smokers. Serum CEA values were 2.5+/-1.7ng/ml in males and 1.6+/-0.8ng/ml in females, with its mean value of 2.4+/-1.6ng/ml. There was no difference between serum values of smokers and nonsmokers. Sweat CEA values were about 40 times higher than those of serum, with no correlation of sweat and serum CEA(correlation coefficient=-0.16, P>0.05). In the blood type study, sweat CEA values were 123.1+/-131.8ng/ml in A type and 66.1+/-55.0ng/ml in B type(P>0.05), whereas serum CEA values were higher in AB type and lower in O type(P<0.05, ANOVA). CONCLUSION: Sweat CEA values are extraordinarily high in contradistinction to serum. Sweat CEA values are not affected by sex, smoking status and blood type. There seems to be no association between CEA values of sweat and serum.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1981;19(2):227-231
A case of epidermodysplasia verruciformis associated with squamous cell carcinoma occurred in 21 years old male. He had extensive flat-topped papules on the face, neck and the upper trunk, and verrucous lesions on the extremities, especially on the dorsa of hands and feet for 15 years. Several peanut sized ulcerative lesions on the forehead were noticed for 1 year and identified as squarnous cell carcinomi. The akin test with dinitrochlorobenzene, tuberculin, phytohemagglutinin, candidin and dermatophytin showed alI negative. T and B-cell counts were within norrnal limits, but IgG and IgD levels in serurn were incresed.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1981;19(1):105-109
We experienced a case of Reiter's syndrome. A 20-year-old Korean male patient of Reiter's syndrome was reported. He had been suffered from mucopurulent urethral discharge, followed by white scaly patches on the skin, fever, transient conjunctivitis and arthralgia. Initially he was treated with sodium salicylic acid (Aspirin), indomethacin 150 mg/day for arthralgia and prednisolone 30mg/day. In accordance with improvement of symptom., prednisolone was tapered to 12. 5mg, when methotrexate 20mg/wk was added for the prevention of side effects of long term use of corticosteroids, Conjunctivitis, arthritis, and skin lesions cleared within 7 months. With improvement of symptoms, prednisolone was tapered and methotrexate also was tapered slowly. Physical therapy for joint stiffness was done.

Annals of Dermatology 1994;6(2):196-199
Endometriosis is an enigmatic disease of menstruating females affecting the reproductive life. We report herein a case of perineal endometriosis in a 33-year-old woman. The patient presented two rounded, thickened plaques bilaterally on the perineum for about four year. The plaque on the right side was located mainly at the episiotomy scar. Histologic examination showed confirmative feature of glandular structures embedded in the cellular stroma and predecidual changes of late secretory phase of endometrium. Radical operation of total hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy and partial excision of perineal lesions were performed. There was complete resolution with no relapse by the 6-month follow-up. This is of a very rare occurrence and three cases have been reported in the Korean literatures up to date.

PURPOSE: The present study evaluated the developmental characteristics and causes of nasal retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: A total of 111 eyes from 56 ROP-affected infants who had been treated with laser photocoagulation by retina specialists at the nasal site were examined. The gestational age at birth and diagnosis, location of the lesion, time, and number of laser photocoagulation therapies for nasal and temporal ROP were analyzed. RESULTS: Thirty-three cases (29.7%) were diagnosed with nasal ROP. The mean gestational age at birth was 28.43 weeks for nasal ROP, and 29.44 weeks for temporal ROP (p = 0.022). Additionally, the average gestational age of infants who received laser photocoagulation was 36.61 weeks for nasal ROP, and 39.71 weeks for temporal ROP (p = 0.001). The average number of ROP laser photocoagulation trials was 2936.03 for nasal ROP, and 1611.83 for temporal ROP (p = 0.0001). No case was observed with a wider avascular area in the nasal retina than in the temporal retina. Additionally, compared to the temporal ROP, the nasal ROP showed significant difference in progression rates, 33.3% in the nasal group and 8.97% in the temporal group (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Nasal ROP was due to the ROP lesions developing earlier in the nasal than the temporal retina, although not due to any atypically wider nasal avascular area. In these cases, nasal ROP showed more disease progression compared to temporal ROP.
