Korean Journal of Legal Medicine 1999;23(1):48-50
The gray vibrissae of Korean males(n =189) between 15 and 75 years old and females(n =111) between-15 and 74 years old who visited the department of otorhinolaryngology, Konkuk university Chungju hospital during 1996 to 1998, were counted for the purpose of estimating approximate age range in individuals of unknown age . The lowest age appearing gray hairs in both sexes was 15-year-old. The Pearson's correlation coefficient in both sexes was 0.490 (p<0.01). The age appearing gray vibrissae in females was slightly earlier than that of males, however, the differences between right and left sides of nasal cavity were insignificant. This method of counting gray vibrissae would be useful to estimate age range in personal identification together with other methods available until now.

4.Major changes and improvements of dialysis therapy in Korea: review of end-stage renal disease registry.
The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine 2015;30(1):17-22
The Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN) launched a nationwide end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patient registry in 1985 called the Insan Prof. Byung-Suk Min Memorial ESRD Patient Registry. KSN members voluntarily participate in this registry, which has been collecting data through the Internet since 2000. The KSN ESRD patient registry data were reviewed to elucidate the major changes and improvements in dialysis therapy in Korea. The data review revealed: a rapid increase in the number of patients with ESRD; an increase in the number of patients with diabetic nephropathy; a decrease in the proportion of patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis; an increase in the role of private dialysis clinics; an increase in the number of elderly patients undergoing dialysis and the number of patients undergoing long-term dialysis; a decrease in mean blood pressure and an increase in pulse pressure; improvement in anemia treatment; improvement in dialysis adequacy; and improvement in the survival of patients undergoing dialysis. In conclusion, improvements have been made in blood pressure control, anemia treatment, and dialysis adequacy despite increases in the number of elderly patients, diabetic patients, and patients on long-term dialysis during the last two decades in Korea.

7.Current status of dialysis therapy for ESRD patients in Korea.
Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2013;56(7):562-568
The Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN) launched the End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Patient Registry in 1985, and the online internet registry program was begun in 2001. The increasing number of elderly people and diabetic patients in Korea has resulted in a very rapid increase in the number of ESRD patients. The total number of dialysis patients was 50,289: 42,596 receiving hemodialysis (HD) and 7,694 receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) at the end of 2011. The prevalence of dialysis therapy was 972.4 patients per million population (PMP), and the proportion of dialysis therapy was HD: 84.7% and PD: 15.3%. The primary causes of ESRD were diabetic nephropathy (47.1%), hypertensive nephrosclerosis (19.6%), and chronic glomerulonephritis (10.4%). The mean urea reduction ratio of hemodialysis was 68.11% in male HD patients and 74.09% in female HD patients. The mean Kt/V was 1.395 in male patients and 1.660 in female patients. The most common cause of death was cardiac arrest (26%), followed by sepsis (9.7%), cerebro-vascular accident (8.7%), respiratory infection (8.4%), and myocardial infarction (6.6%), respectively. The five-year survival rates of male and female dialysis patients were 65.3% and 68.0% in Korea.

Korean Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 1990;10(1):47-52
A clinical review was performed in 52 cases with the foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract who underwent the endoscopic extraction of fereign body at our hospital from June 1985 to October 1989. The results are as following. 1) The most prevalent age was under 10 years of age (21 cases, 40.4%), and male was more prevalent than female (M:F=1.6:1). 2) The most common site of foreign bodies was esophagus (35 cases, 67.3%), next stomach (15 cases, 28.9%). 3) The foreign bodies in esophagus were coins (18 cases, 51.4%), meats (7 cases, 20.0%), bones (5 cases, 14.3%), other food materials or metals (5 cases, 14.3%)in order of frequency, and those in the stomach wer bezoars (7 cases, 50.0%), coins (2 cases, 14.3%), suture materials (2 cases, 14.3%), others (baduk stone, pin, tack, cross). 4) The combined diseases with upper gastrointestinal foreign bodies were the passage disturbances (11 cases, 21.2%) due to stenosis, and schizophrenia (1 case), aleoholism (1 case). 5) Complications by foreign bodies were 8 cases (15.4%), such as eisophageal laceration or ulceration (4 cases), esophaigeal perforation (1 case), aspiration pneumonia(1 case), duodenal obstruction (2 cases). 6) Successful rate of the endoscopic extraction was 88.5%(46 in 52 cases). And 6 unsuccessful cases were 4 cases who have gastric bezoars too hard and large to extract, a case with esophageal perforation, and a case with bezoar in the third portion of duodenum.

10.Effects of Dexamethasone on Endothelin-1(ET-1) Production by Keratinocytes.

Annals of Dermatology 2001;13(3):148-152
Epidermal keratinocytes are important sources of a wide variety of cytokines that include the endothelin-1 (ET-1). Glucocorticoids have been shown to inhibit the production of several cytokines. However, their effect on ET-1 synthesis by keratinocytes is still unknown. It has been reported that ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation stimulates both the synthesis and release of ET-1 and it was observed that ET-1 secretion by HaCat cells increased with increasing UVB exposure. In this study, the effects of glucocorticoid on ET-1 production were evaluated using cultured HaCat keratinocytes. The results showed that dexamethasone suppressed basal re-lease of ET-1. In addition, it strongly inhibited the UVB-mediated augmentation of ET-1 production. Furthermore, lincomycin slightly enhanced the inhibitory effect of dexamethasone on ET-1 synthesis.
