1.Identification of animal rabies in Inner Mongolia and analysis of the etiologic characteristics.

OBJECTIVETo perform pathological observation and etiological identification of specimens collected from dairy cows, beef cattle and dogs which were suspected of rabies in Inner Mongolia in 2011, and analyze their etiological characteristics.
METHODSPathological observation was conducted on the brain specimens of three infected animals with Hematoxylin-Eosin staining, followed by confirmation using immunofluorescence and nested RT-PCR methods. Finally, phylogenetic analysis was conducted using the virus N gene sequence amplified from three specimens.
RESULTSEosinophilic and cytoplasmic inclusion bodies were seen in neuronal cells of the CNS; and rabies non-characteristic histopathological changes were also detected in the CNS. The three brain specimens were detected positive. N gene nucleotide sequence of these three isolates showed distinct sequence identity, therefore they fell into different groups in the phylogenetic analysis. N gene in the cow and dog had higher homology with that in Hebei isolate, but that in the beef cattle had higher homology with that in Mongolian lupine isolate and Russian red fox isolate.
CONCLUSIONRabies were observed in the dairy cow, beef cattle and canine in the farm in Inner Mongolia, in 2011, which led to a different etiologic characteristics of the epidemic situation.

2.An outbreak of fatal hemorrhagic pneumonia caused by Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus in shelter dogs.

An outbreak of fatal hemorrhagic pneumonia with 70~90% morbidity and 50% mortality occurred in an animal shelter in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, Korea. Clinically, the affected dogs showed severe respiratory distress within 48 h after arriving in the shelter. The dead were found mainly with nasal bleeding and hematemesis. At necropsy, hemothorax and hemorrhagic pneumonia along with severe pulmonary consolidation was observed, though histopathological analysis showed mainly hemorrhagic bronchopneumonia. Lymphoid depletion was inconsistently seen in the spleen, tonsil and bronchial lymph node. Gram-positive colonies were shown in blood vessels or parenchyma of cerebrum, lung, liver, spleen, and kidney. Also, Streptococcus (S.) equi subsp. zooepidemicus was isolated from the various organs in which the bacterium was microscopically and histologically detected. In addition, approximately 0.9 Kb specific amplicon, antiphagocytic factor H binding protein, was amplified in the bacterial isolates. In this study, we reported an outbreak of canine hemorrhagic bronchopneumonia caused by S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus in an animal shelter in Yangju, Korea.

3.Retrospective study of canine cutaneous tumors in Korea.

Over the 42 month period from January 2003 to June2006, a total of 2,952 canine biopsy specimens werereceived from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospitalof Seoul National University and from veterinary practitionersacross the nation. Out of these, 748 (25.34%) cases werediagnosed as canine cutaneous tumors in the Departmentof Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine,Seoul National University, Korea. Thirty-eight differenttypes of cutaneous tumors were identified and categorizedinto epithelial and melanocytic tumors (56.95%), mesenchymaltumors (38.90%), and hematopoietic tumors (4.14%)located in the skin. Among these, 69.25% were benign and30.74% were malignant. The top ten most frequentlydiagnosed cutaneous tumors were epidermal and follicularcysts (12.70%), lipoma (11.36%), mast cell tumors (8.82%),cutaneous histiocytoma (7.49%), basal cell tumors (6.82%),sebaceous gland adenoma (6.68%), sebaceous glandhyperplasia (5.08%), hepatoid gland adenoma (3.61%),apocrine adenocarcinoma (3.07%), and fibroma (2.81%),in order of prevalence. They comprised 68.45% of allcutaneous tumors. These top ten cutaneous tumors weredistributed on the trunk (30.08%), head and neck(20.9%), extremities (19.14%), anal and perianal area(8.59%), and tail (3.91%). The age of the dogs with the tenmost frequent tumors had a mean age of 8.3 years, with arange of 2 months to 19 years. When all types of tumorswere considered together in the entire population, therewas no difference in incidence according to sex.

4.Survey and anslysis of infection rate of dog rabies in the regions with high incidence of human rabies.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the situation of dog rabies and analyze it's relationship with human rabies.
METHODSIn Guizhou, Guangxi and Hunan provinces which suffered from rabies most heavily, one or two cities were selected respectively from regions with high-, middle-, low-incidence rate of human rabies as investigation spots where Dogs' brain specimens were collected and detected with both direct immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and RT-PCR.
RESULTSA total of 2887 specimens were collected and 66 of these were positive for IFA and RT-PCR. Therefore, the rate of positive specimens was 2.3%. However, there was not a close relationship in the incidence rate of dog rabies and human rabies.
CONCLUSIONDog's infection situation of rabies contributed to the severe epidemic of human rabies.

5.A suspected case of Lyme borreliosis in a hunting dog in Korea.

A two-year-old male Pointer had been presented with anorexia, cachexia, and weight loss of 10-day duration. Upon physical examination, fever, lethargy, superficial lymph node enlargement, and tick infestation were noted. The only abnormality in CBC and serum chemistry analyses was mild hyperglobulinemia. Spleen was enlarged by radiography, and the lymph nodes showed neutrophilic lymphadenitis by cytological examination. A polymerase chain reaction test for babesiosis and commercial ELISA tests for Ehrlichia canis, heartworm, and Lyme disease was negative except for Lyme disease, which was verified by both an IFA-IgG test and a quantitative C6 assay. Doxycycline was administered for 2 weeks and the recovery was uneventful. Post-treatment C6 titer decreased to within normal limits.

6.Prevalence and Clinical Characterization of Gastric Helicobacter Species Infection of Dogs and Cats in Korea.

This study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence and clinical characterizations of gastric Helicobacter spp. infection of dogs and cats in Korea. The prevalence of Helicobacter spp. infection of dogs and cats determined by urease test was 78.4% and 64%, respectively, although Helicobacter genus-specific PCR assay showed that it was 82.3% and 84%. Urease mapping results based on urease test showed that total positive rate of tested tissues from clinically abnormal dogs was significantly higher than that from clinically normal dogs (p=0.0018; Odds ratio = 6.118; 95% Confidence Interval = 1.96~19.103). These findings were consistent with the results of Helicobacter genus-specific PCR assay which showed that positive rate of the fundus (100%) and the antrum (100%) of clinically abnormal dogs was significantly higher than that of same gastric regions of clinically normal dogs (77.5 and 67.5% respectively). In comparison of gastric regions between clinically normal dogs and abnormal dogs, positive rate of urease test for the fundus (100%) and body (90.9%) in clinically abnormal dogs was significantly higher than that of abnormal dogs (72.5% and 57.5% respectively; p<0.05). The results of urease mapping in dogs and cats also indicated that Helicobacter colonization in the fundus was more dense compared with the density in the body and antrum. In Helicobacter species-specific PCR assay for dogs, 32 of 42 fundic tissues (76.2%) were positive for H. heilmannii and two (4.8%) were positive for H. felis. In cats, 18 of 21 fundic tissues (85.7%) were positive for H. heilmannii and 2 (9.5%) were positive for H. felis. Gastritis scores of fundic tissues from clinically abnormal infected dogs were similar to that from noninfected dogs and evidence of upregulation of IL-1beta, IL-8, and TNF-alpha mRNA was not detected in gastric fundic tissues from clinically abnormal infected dogs. This study suggested that Helicobacter spp. infection in domestic dogs including private owned pet dogs and cats is highly prevalent usually with no clinical sign but high density of colonization can be related to gastrointestinal signs

7.An Autochthonous Case of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis in Korea.

A 12-year-old spayed female mixed-bred dog presented with nasal bleeding of 2 days duration and a skin nodule in the left flank. No abnormalities were found in coagulation profiles and blood pressure. Cytological evaluation of the nodule revealed numerous characteristic round organisms having a nucleus and a bar within macrophages and in the background, consistent with leishmaniasis. In vitro culture was unsuccessful but PCR of the nodular aspirate identified the organisms as Leishmania infantum, and the final diagnosis was canine leishmaniasis. No history of travel to endemic countries was noted. Because the dog had received a blood transfusion 2 years before the illness, serological screening tests were performed in all donor dogs of the commercial blood bank using the commercial Leishmania ELISA test kit, and there were no positive results. Additional 113 dogs with hyperglobulinemia from Seoul were also screened with the same kits but no positive results were obtained. To the best of the author's knowledge this is the first autochthonous case of canine leishmaniasis in Korea.
