Remarks about laparoscopy during 1996-1999 periods in Institute of Protection of Mother and Newborn (IPMN). Laparoscopy for infertility had the highest rate (44.5%) with some technique: ovariotubal plastic surgery, polycystic ovary surgery…. Laparoscopy for ovarian cysts accounted for 24% with removed follicular cyst or ovariotomy procedure. The rate of laparoscopy for ectopic pregnancy was 22.8% mainly by gestational ovariotubal procedure. The rate of preserving ovary in ectopic pregnancy was very low, only 20% of total cases. The complications of laparoscopy were very low

2.Evaluating laparoscopy in Institute of Protection of Mother and Newborn from 1996 to 1999

A retrospective study was performed in 1,142 cases experienced laparoscopy in Institute of Protection of Mother and Newborn during January 1996 to December 1999. The results: applications of laparoscopy are rapidly increasing, both numbers and types. The diseases applied laparoscopy mainly were infertility (44.5%), ovarian cysts (24.0%), and ectopic pregnancy (22.8%). The complications of laparoscopy were very low

3. Anti-inflammatory effects of alkaloid enriched extract from roots of Eurycoma longifolia Jack

Objective: To examine the in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of the alkaloid enriched extract (ELA) from the roots of Eurycoma longifolia. Methods: The in vitro antiinflammatory effects of ELA were evaluated by examining its inhibitory activities against nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) expressions in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The level of NO produced in the culture media was determined by Griess method. The iNOS and COX-2 protein expressions were analyzed by Western blot. The in vivo effect of ELA was evaluated on LPS-induced septic shock in mice model. Mice mortality was monitored for 5 days after injection of LPS. The chemical contents of the ELA were determined by using various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. Results: The ELA was found to exhibit a significant anti-inflammatory effect in both in vitro and in vivo models. The results demonstrated that ELA dose-dependently inhibited LPS-induced NO production as well as the protein iNOS and COX-2 expressions. In the septic shock model, ELA dose-dependently protected mice from LPS-induced mortality. Further study on the isolated components of ELA indicated that 9,10-dimethoxycanthin-6-one may contribute significantly to the anti-inflammatory effects of the extract. Conclusions: These results suggest that ELA exhibits the anti-inflammatory activity via suppression of pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO, iNOS, and COX-2 and protects mice from LPS-induced mortality in septic shock model.
4.Large-scale salmonella outbreak associated with banh mi, Viet Nam, 2024

Objective: To investigate the cause of a foodborne outbreak that occurred in Dong Nai province, Viet Nam, in 2024, and implement control measures.
Methods: An initial investigation was conducted to confirm the outbreak, which was followed by epidemiological and environmental investigations to find the plausible causative food item. Clinical specimens and food samples were tested to identify the pathogen.
Results: A total of 547 symptomatic cases were recorded, of whom two were in severe condition requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ventilation, one of whom died. Among 99 interviewed cases, the mean incubation time was 9 hours (range 2–24 hours), with the main symptoms being fever, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting. All patients had eaten banh mi from a local bakery. Salmonella spp. were identified in food samples and clinical specimens. The bakery halted production, and the outbreak ended after 1 week.
Discussion: All the patients were exposed to only one food in common, which facilitated the investigation process. This outbreak is a reminder to small retailers and take-away shops of the importance of food safety management in preventing similar future outbreaks. All food handlers must comply with food hygiene principles, especially in hot temperatures, which boosts bacterial growth.
