2.Evaluation of Jnnotest HCV 3.0, Genedia HCV 3.0 Enzyme Immunoassay Reagents for Hepatitis C Virus Antibody Detection.

The hepatitis C vims(HCV) is now known to be the chief cause of transfusion-associated non-A, non-B hepatitis. The ultimate goal of blood donor screening for anti-HCV antibodies is the specific exclusion of vital carriers from the blood donor population. Recently, a third generation anti-HCV screening(Green Cross Center Innotest HCV 3.0 Genedia HCV 3.0 ) and immunoblot assay, Inno-Lia HCV Ab III (Innogenetics) using antigens derived from the core and different nonstructural regions(NS3, NS4 and Ns5) of the HCV viral genome were developed. To evaluate the usefulness of these assays, anti-HCV reaction patterns of the Inno-Lia HCV Ab III or presence of HCV-RNA detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) were examined samples in which were repeatedly positive or discrepant with Abbott EIA-2, Innotest HCV 3.0 Genedia HCV 3.0 The reaction intensity of Innotest HCV 3.0 Genedia HCV 3.0 was higher than that of Abbott EIA-2. The sensitivity and specificity of Innotest HCV 3.0 and Genedia HCV 3.0 were 92.9% and 86.8%, respectively, and the positive and negative predictive values were 72.2% and 97.1%. both. The sensitivity and specificity of Abbott EIA-2 were 100% and 78.9%, respectively, and the positive and negative predictive values were 63.6% and 100%, respectively. We concluded that the new third generation HCV EIA reagents can decrease a false positivity of second generation EIA reagents and correlate well with detection of HCV-RNA by RT-PCR.

3.BCG Osteomyelitis: A Case Report

BCG osteomyelitis occurs in the infants and children as complication of BCG vaccination and its occurrence is very rare. It involves the metaphysis of the long bone and its development is chiefly hematogenous spread and direct inoculation. Radiologic feature shows well demarcated, eccentrically located destruction in the metaphysis of the long bone and soft tissue swelling about the lesion but periosteal reaction was absent initially. We experienced a case of BCG osteomyelitis which occurs in the left proximal humerus in 3 month after BCG vaccination.

4.The Treatment of Supracondylar Fracture of the Humerus in Children

Supracondylar fracture of the humerus is the most common fracture of the elbow in children For period of 4 years from Jan. 1980 to Dec. 1983, 54 children with dispaced supracondylar fracture of the humerus were classified by direction of displacement of distal fragment and treated by immediate closed reduction after lateral skeletal traction. 32 cases of these were followed up for more than 6 months. The results were obtained as follows.: 1) The most common incidence (79.6%) was 5 to 12 years of age and male and female ratio was 2.4 : l. The left humerus was involved in 35 cases (64.8%). 2) Of all fracture, extension type was 96.3% and flexion type 3.7%. 3) Under the exact anteroposteier and lateral views, fractures were classified by displaced direction of distal fragment. Immediate closed reduction was done by using thick and strong periosteal hinge after lateral skeletal traction. The more accurate anatomical reduction was obtained by maintenance of reduction state and further correction during lateral skeletal traction, and complications such as VIC, loss of reduction were lessened probably. 4) For follow up study of 32 cases, final result were analized according to Mitchells classification. Excellent results were obtained 23 cases (71.9%) Good results were 8 cases (25.0%) Unsatisfactory result was 1 case (3.1 %) 5) In 2 cases of treatment failure, the brachialis muscle was buttonholed by metaphyseal spike of the proximal fragment. 6) During lateral skeletal traction, superficial infection was developed through pin tract in 4 cases. These were treated by the administration of antibiotics and there were no complication such as osteomyelitis.

5.A Statistical Study on Arrhythmias of the Aged.

A statistical study was done on arrhythmia of the aged who were older than 60 during the period 1963~1972 at Seoul national University Hospital. This study included 6,511 patients among 40,000 total patients. The results were as follows. 1) Arrhythmias were observed among 3,058 patients(46.97%). Sinus irregularitis were the most frequent arrhythmia. 2) Except sinus irregularities premature beat (38.3%), atrial fibrillation (16.1%), bundle branch block (10.5%), atriovenricular block (10.5%), atrioventricular escape beat (5.1%), atrioventricular junctional rhythm (4.9%), wandering pacemaker(4.0%) and paroxysmal tachycardia(2.5%) were frequent arrhythmias. 3) Cardiovascular disease was major underlying disease. In cardiovascular disease group, the incidence of arrhythmia was 51.15% which was three times as high as non-cardiovascular and normal group. 4) Most arrhythmias were more frequently observed among the aged except bundle branch block and ventricular paroxysmal tachycardia. 5) The incidence of arrhythmia was similar among the aged except pre-excitation syndrome which was predisposed to woman. 6) Arrhythmia was most frequently observed in coronary heart disease. 7) Among sinus irregularities, simus bradycardia was more frequent in the aged. 8) There were no significant differences in frequency of arrhythmia between non-cardiovascular disease group patients and normal group.

7.Characteristics of Temperament and Character Properties in Adolescents with Internet Addiction Tendency.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have focused on characteristics of adolescents who use internet addictively. Due to many ambiguities in the definitions of internet addiction, it is hard to find a tool for diagnosing internet addiction. In this study, we attempt to identify the temperamental characteristics of adolescents who have addictive internet using patterns by administering a newly developed internet addiction scale based on a psychometric technique and temperament and character inventory (TCI) based on Cloninger's psychobiological model. METHODS: Participants were 566 high school students. 478 students were recruited from high schools, and 88 were selected from internet cafes. We applied the internet addiction scale and TCI. All the students were divided into 3 groups (high risk user group, potential risk user group and normal user group) according to the results of the internet addiction scale. TCI scores were compared and analyzed according to the participants' characteristics. RESULTS: There were significant differences in the distribution of internet user group according to gender. Boys had higher percentage of high risk and potential risk users than girls. When each TCI score was compared according to gender, girls showed significantly higher harm avoidance, reward dependence, cooperativeness scale scores and lower persistence, self-transcendence scale scores than boys. TCI scores were compared among the internet addiction risk user groups. Risky internet users showed lower scores in reward dependence, self-directness and cooperativeness dimensions than normal internet users. CONCLUSION: There was a gender difference in internet addiction risk in this study. These results suggest that adolescents who use internet addictively also have higher tendency of problematic social and interpersonal relationship. These tendencies need to be considered as one of the important aspects of internet addiction. This study shows that assessment of temperament and character in adolescents who have problems related to the internet may be needed for understanding their addiction behaviors and underlying psychopathologies.

10.Effects of Dehydration on Vasopressin and Oxytocin Immunoreactive Neurons of the Hypothalamus in the Mongolian Gerbil.

The effects of dehydration on vasopressin and oxytocin immunoreactive neurons in the hypothalamus was investigated by using a immunohistochemistry. Adult Mongolian gerbil[Meriones unguiculates] were deprived of drinking water. Dehydrated animals were sacrificed on the 7th, 14th and 21st day of water retriction. The results are as follows : 1. The body weights were decreased about 1.8% daily. On the 21st day of dehydration, they were shown up to 45% compare to the control. 2. In the hypothalamus of the control group, majority of vasopressin and oxytocin immunoreactive neurons were located in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei. 3. Changes due to dehydrated stimulation were mainly observed in vasopressin immunoreactive neurons. And these changes in supraoptic nuclei were more severe than those in paraventricular nucleus. Size of vasopressin immunoreactived cells and of areas were increased as to proceed the dehydration. The numbers of those were increased on the 7th day of dehydration, and then they were continously decreased. 4. Although oxytocin immunoreactive neurons were slightly changed in numbers during dehydration, they were not shown conspicuous changes compare to vasopressin immunoreactive neurons. Thus it is appeared that vasopressin secretory neurons in the hypothalamus of Mongolian gerbil are affected by osmotic stress induced dehydration while oxytocin neurons may be affected by other factors.
