In April 2002 and 2003, soft rot on fruit of eggplant (Solanum melongena) caused by Choanephora cucurbitarum was observed in the experimental fields at Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services in Korea. The disease began with water-soaking and dark-green lesions, and then the infected tissues were rapidly rotten. Sporangium was subglobose in shape and sized 40~130 microm. Monosporous sporangiola were elliptic, fusiform or ovoid, brown in color, and measured as 12~20 x 6~14 microm. Sporangiospores having three or more appendages were elliptic, fusiform or ovoid in shape, dark brown or brown in color, and sized 14~20 x 7~16 microm. The fungus grew well on potato dextrose agar between 15 and 40degrees C and its optimum growth temperature was 30degrees C. Based on morphological characteristics, the causal fungus of the fruit soft rot of eggplant was identified as C. cucurbitarum. This is the first report on the soft rot of S. melongena caused by C. cucurbitarum in Korea.

OBJECTIVE: Although a great deal of knowledge accumulated with regard to the causes and epidemiologic features of cervical cancer, primary prevention has not been particularly effective to date. Most efforts with regards of control of cervical cancer have been directed toward secondary prevention with cytologic smears in a screening program. The purpose of this study was to know the cervical smear histories in the women with neoplasia of uterine cervix at present. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Between June, 1993 and October, 1996, seventy women with invasive cervical carcinoma and eighty-seven women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN) were interviewed about cervical smear histories to assess the frequencies of past smear at the Soonchunhyang University Hospital. RESULTS: The results were follows: 1. The mean age of the women with invasive cervical cancer and CIN were 55+/-9 and 42+/-11, respectively. 2. Of the 70 cases of cervical cancer, 61%(43/70) has not been screened, compared with 43%(37/87) in cases of CIN. 3. The mean ages at first smear in the cases of previous smear were 42+/-6 of 27 cancers, 37+/-7 of 50 CINs. The gap between the age at the first smear and the age at diagnosis were about 6 years in cases of cervical cancers, about 5 years in cases of CIN. 4. The most common symptom in cervical cancers was vaginal bleeding or postcoital bleeding(57%). Although 13%(9/70) were discovered during screening without symptom in the women with cervical cancers, 58%(52/87) were diagnosed incidently during screening in CIN. 5. Pap smear numbers before diagnosis were strongly associated with age and stage. Among women diagnosed with invasive cancer under the age of 49, 75% had at least one cervical smear. But, all women with cervical cancer over age of 65 have not been screened. Unscreened rates of stage I, II, III, and IV were 34%, 78%, 85% and 83% respectively. 6. Among 38 cases who had undergone radiation therapy, 82%(31/38) had not been screen in contrast to 38%(12/32) in the women who had undergone radical surgery. 7. Among women with previous smears in the cervical cancer, 20%(14/70) have been screened within 1year. CONCLUSION: It is likely to diagnosis cervical cancer who had normal papanicolau smear in recent. So papanicolau smear is examined carefully and other adjunctive test is help to diagnosis cervical cancer exactly, for example cervicography, HPV testing.

Disulfiram, tetraethylthiuram disulfide, has been used in the clinical treatment of alcoholism since 1948. Aside from the manifestations of a disulfiram-alcohol reaction, disulfiram causes direct toxic side effects including psychiatric, cardiovascular, hematologic and neurologic disorders. The most frequent neurologic side effects are drowsiness, apathy, headache, decreased sexual potency, neuropathy, and optic neuritis. We describe a 26-year-old man who insidiously developed a distal synunetric sensorimotor polyneuropathy after seven years of disulfiram ingestion confirmed by nerve biopsy. He showed nearly complete resolution after the disulfiram was stopped.

As a result of comparing the phenolic components of cinnamon medicines, the total phenolic component content of Cinnamomi Cortex in China was about 2.65 times higher than that of Cinnamomi Cortex in Vietnam. In addition, the total phenolic component content of Vietnamese Cinnamomi Cortex Spissus was about 1.80 times higher than that of Chinese Cinnamomi Cortex Spissus. Meanwhile, Vietnamese Cinnamomi Ramulus showed a content about 3.29 times higher than that of Chinese Cinnamomi Ramulus. Cinnamaldehyde, the main component of cinnamon medicines, showed the same tendency as the total phenolic component content. In terms of the average content of the total phenolic components, Cinnamomi Cortex showed the highest content at 23964 μg/g, followed by Cinnamomi Cortex Spissus at 17489 μg/g and Cinnamomi Ramulus at 5435.8 μg/g. These results showed that Cinnamomi Cortex and Cinnamomi Cortex Spissus with stem bark as usage sites had about 3.22 to 4.41 times higher content of phenolic components than Cinnamomi Ramulus with young branches as usage sites.

The purpose of this study is to develop a new method of producing tienchi seng (notoginseng, Panax notoginseng) extracts featuring high concentrations of the ginsenoside Rg3, Rg5, and Rg6, special components of Korean red ginseng. The chemical transformation from ginseng saponin glycosides to prosapogenin was analyzed by HPLC. Tienchi seng was heat-processed at 100 o C and the optimum conditions were identified. The highest concentrations of total saponin (29.723%) and the ginsenoside Rg3 (1.769%), Rg5 (5.979%), and Rg6 (13.473%) were produced at 48 hours. Also, when tienchi seng was subjected to the ultrasonic thermal fusion (100 o C) process, the concentrations of total saponin (30.578%), ginsenoside Rg3 (2.392%), Rg5 (6.614%), and Rg6 (13.017%) were highest at 36 hours. On the other hand, the 2-hour heat-processed extract and 2-hour ultrasonic thermal fusion-processed extract did not contain ginsenoside Rg3, Rg5, and Rg6. The ultrasonic thermal fusion process had an extraction yield that was approximately 1.26 times greater than that of the heat process. These results indicate that the highly functional tienchi seng extracts created through the ultrasonic thermal fusion process are more industrially useful than those produced using the heat process.

OBJECTIVES: This study measures serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in tire-manufacturing workers, and attempts to find occupational or non-occupational factors that related to their PSA levels. METHODS: A total of 1,958 healthy male workers (1,699 were production workers and 259 were office workers) took PSA measurement for analysis. RESULTS: After adjusting for age, body mass index, hypertension, regular exercise, alcohol drinking and smoking, which were significantly related to serum PSA levels or known related factors of serum PSA levels, the geometric mean PSA levels were significantly high in the office workers (p = 0.017), the older age group (p < 0.001), the group with hypertension (p = 0.046) and the group of individuals that do not exercise regularly (p = 0.015) and the office workers were more likely to have a serum PSA level of > or =4.0 (OR 7.73, 95% CI: 2.78-21.46) or 2.5 ng/mL (OR 2.74, 95% CI: 1.49-5.08). After stratifying by age and adjusting aforementioned covariates, office workers 50 years of age and older had the significantly higher geometric mean PSA levels (p = 0.017) and were more likely to have a serum PSA level of > or =4.0 ng/mL (OR 12.90, 95% CI: 3.65-45.64) or 2.5 ng/mL (OR 3.90, 95% CI: 1.64-9.25) than production workers 50 years of age and older. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that serum PSA levels were significantly higher among the group with hypertension or the group of individuals that did not exercise regularly or group of office workers who were considered to have lesser physical activities.

The endometrial osseous metaplasia is one of a rare conditions which gynecologist experience clinically. Clinical presentation may include irregular menstration, abnormal uterine bleeding, discharge, dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, and secondary infertility. However the etiology and treatment about this disease are unclear. Recently, ultrasound-guided management of ectopic bone in uterus was suggested more potentially safer based on reported multi-patients women, a large majority was successfully treated. We have experienced a case of endometrial osseous metaplasia diagnosed and treated by ultrasound-guided dilatation and curettage. Which is presented with a brief review of literatures.

We report an unbalanced translocation involving chromosome 2 and 7 due to a balanced reciprocal translocation 2;7 in the father. The female fetus had a partial trisomy of the long arm of chromosome 2 with a partial monosomy of distal 7q. Ultrasound at the first trimester had indicated normal fetal anatomy, including normal intracranial structures. Parental karyotypes showed a paternal balanced translocation: 46,XY,t(2;7)(q37.3;->q34). The unbalanced translocation in the fetus resulted in trisomy for 2q37.3 qter and monosomy for 7q34->qter. Postnatal examination showed that the female abortus had a cleft lip and palate, and mild dysmorphic features. The clinical phenotype was in agreement with previous descriptions and allowed us to propose a fetal phenotype for this chromosomal abnormality.

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of eye diseases occurred among workers at a poultry abattoir in South Korea from December 2012 to June 2013. An epidemiological investigation of the causative agent was conducted. The workers were given a special health examination and workplace environmental monitoring was performed. Workers with ocular symptoms subsequently underwent an ophthalmic examination. CASE PRESENTAION: From a total of 41 workers, 26 (63.4 %) were diagnosed with keratoepitheliopathy by ophthalmic examination. Environmental monitoring of the workplace revealed that the ultraviolet (UV) apron-disinfection lamp had not been turning off at the set times, and so the workers’ faces had been exposed to UV radiation. Effective radiation dose measurement showed a UV-B exposure of 7-30 μW/cm2, and a UV-C exposure of 40-200 μW/cm2; both values exceed the occupational exposure limits. The outbreak ceased after the lamp was repaired. CONCLUSIONS: This case shows that inappropriate use of the UV disinfection lamp can cause mass photokeratitis. In order to prevent this, the UV disinfection lamp must be checked regularly, workers must be educated on the health effects of UV radiation, and appropriate eye protection must be worn.
