The microclimate at working environment is bad, especially radiation. The particle levels at most workshops are higher than approved standard. The morbidity is increasing between 1999 to 2000. The increase in morbidity with professional age was noted. The incidence of skin, dental and ORL diseases increase significantly. The alergic cutaneous diseases affect to fourth of workers. 11.48% of examined persons have silicosis.

2.Some occupational diseases were common in Thai Nguyen metalurgical industry

Across - Sectional study was carried out to assess of occupational diseases in Thai Nguyen metalurgical industry. The study was conducted to workers which had been exposed more than 5 years old with risk factors. The results showed that: Among 1267 workers were medically examined, the prevalence of silicosis was high: Iron and steel workers: 9.7%, Non - ferrous metalurgical workers: 10.4%. The rate of sillicosis had close relationship with years of exposure and working enviroment. In non - ferrous metalurgical industry, the rate of poisoning was high. The serious status of diseases was about 20% with lead poisoning. Many patients were died because of Asenic and Benzen poisoning.

3.Study on respiratory functions of the workers in some cement and asbestos factories, giving the methods for reducing respiratory diseases

Study of respiratory function of 120 males’ workers ages of 25-45 years in some cement and asbestos factories was performed to give the methods for reducing respiratory diseases. Results showed that: the working time of these workers was over 5 years. Their respiratory function reduced by aged and working time. The more working time was, the more exposed time to dust in working environmental was. The results indicated that it is necessary to give reducing methods of silidust in producing process, to improve work condition, and to reduce diseases of respiratory

4.The safety and health of farmers exposed to chemicals for plant protection in vegetable areas

The cross-sectional study with interviews people who exposed to chemicals for plant protection at 528 households in vegetable areas in Thai Nguyen city showed that: the rate of people directly exposing to pesticides in study group is very high (34.8%). 55.3% of people exposing to pesticides are women, 20% out of them under 18 and over 60 years old. Knowledge and practice on safety in using pesticides are even low. Common manifestations: tiredness, headache, dizziness, numbness account for 3.1-48.1%. The rate of nerve and dermal diseases is relatively high

5.Study on lead and arsenic poisoning status of workers at Thai Nguyen Color Metal Company.

A description and analysis were realized to determine the intoxication of lead and arsenic in workers who were exposed to various enviromental factors in Thai Nguyen colored metallurgy factories. These workers had > 5 years old professional age in the field of exploiting and processing the metal. Study showed a high level of intoxication. The mean value of urine ALA oscillated in the range from 7.15 – 7.8 mg/l. There were 20-51 cases with pathological manifestation of lead and arsenic intoxication in the years 1998-2000.

7.Distributions of Listeria spp., Bacillus spp., Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., and Coliforms Isolated from Agricultural Herb Products from the Market.

The study was conducted to investigate the distribution of pathogenic bacteria related to agricultural herb products that are sold on the market in South Korea. A survey was conducted on the microbial contamination levels and antibiotic susceptibility of Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) among 194 agricultural herb products on sale in Seoul. Distributions of those isolates were 252 coliforms, 148 Bacillus spp., 75 Enterococcus spp., 10 Staphylococcus spp., and 6 Listeria spp., respectively. The number of B. cereus isolates was 34, Escherichia coli isolates was three, Enterococcus faecium isolate was one, and Enterococcus faecalis isolate was one. Antibiotic susceptibility of B. cereus isolates was tested against 36 kinds of antibiotic susceptibility discs by disc diffusion method. B. cereus isolates were resistant to 20 kinds of antibiotics and semi-resistant to 11 kinds of antibiotics. On the basis of these results, any agricultural herb product can be assumed to be resistant or semi-resistant to the antibiotics used in human. In conclusion, we suggest sanitary control and special management regarding B. cereus contamination in agricultural herb products.

8.A Study on the Perioperative Changes of Creatine Kinase and Lactic Dehydrogenase.

A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the changes in serum creatine kinase (CK) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. We studied 37 patients who had normal liver and kidney functions and who did not have the perioperative acute myocardial infarction. After measuring total serum LDH and isoenzyme 1 to 5, and seum CK and isoenzyme CK-MB, we compared pastoperative values to preoperative value. We also calculated the ratio of LD1 to LD2 (LD1 /LD2). Total LDH increased for postoperative 0 day, 1 day, 2 day, and 4 day. LD1, LD2 LD3 and LD4, increased for postoperative 0 day, 1 day, and 2 day, but LD5 increased for 0 day and 1 day. Total CK increased for 0 day, 1 day, and 2 day, but CK-MB did not increase postoperatively. LD1/LD2 increased at posoperative 2 day. Among the total 113 samples, the number of the cases of LD1/LD2 > 1 is 12.

9.Frontoparietal Cortical Thinning in Respiratory-Type Panic Disorder: A Preliminary Report.

OBJECTIVE: Many evidences raise the possibility that the panic disorder (PD) patients with respiratory subtype (RS) may have characteristic structural abnormalities. We aimed to explore the structural differences between PD patients with and without the respiratory symptoms. METHODS: Patients with PD were recruited from the Department of Psychiatry at Korea University Anam Hospital. Respiratory subtype (RS) was diagnosed when at least 4 out of 5 of the following respiratory symptoms were present during the panic attack: fear of dying, chest pain/discomfort, shortness of breath, paresthesias, and a choking sensation. We acquired high-resolution MRI scans and used FreeSurfer to obtain a measure of cortical thickness for each patient. RESULTS: Cluster based analysis revealed significantly decreased cortical thickness in the left hemisphere in the caudal-middle-frontal, superior frontal, and posterior parietal areas in the RS group. No significant difference was observed in any of the limbic areas. CONCLUSION: Respiratory symptoms of panic disorder were associated with a reduction in cortical thickness in the left frontal and parietal areas. This finding leads to the assumption that the frontoparietal network is the crucial component in a larger cortical network underlying the perception of dyspnea in RS.

10.The Change of Colloid Osmotic Pressure during Pediatric Open Heart Surgery.

To evaluate the change of colloid osmotic pressure(COP) and the correlation between COP and other parameters during pediatric open heart surgery at Seoul National University Children's Hospital, COP, protein, albumin, hemoglobin, and hematocrit, were measured immediately after induction(T1), before cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB)(T3), duringT4, T5), and after bypass(T.6, T7) and immediately after(T8) and 24 hour after(T9) arrival at intensive care unit (ICU) in l0 pediatric patients aged from l year to 13 years. Above parameters of priming solution(T2) were also measured. The results were as followings; l) The good correlation between COP and protein(r=0.87), albumin(r=0.86), hemoglobin(r=0. 80), hematocrit(r=0.77) were showed. 2) The COP of priming solution was 9.42.6 mmHg and this was definitely lower than normal value. 3) The COP during CPB was in the range from 11 to 12 mmHg(mean values) and this value was also significantly lower than normal value. 4) The COP increased from the time of weaning from CPB, but the COP at the arrival at ICU was 18.0+/-1.2 mmHg and this value was still significantly lower than normal value. 5) The COP at 24 hours after arrival at ICU was 21.7+/-1.2 mmHg and this value was not significantly different fron normal value. Thus, the results suggest that the priming solution shuold be improved to maintain COP during and immediatelt after CPB.
