OBJECTIVETo report the effect of Fengweicao Granule (FWCCG), a Chinese herbal preparation made of herba Pteris multifidae, in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
METHODSOne hundred and fifty-five patients were assigned to two groups, the 108 patients in the treated group were administered orally with FWCG twice a day, 5 g every time; the 47 patients in the control group were treated with Proscar 5 mg per day for 3 months. The effects were evaluated by the change of the related indexes before and after treatment, including scoring by international prostatic symptom scale (I-PSS), maximum flowing rate of urine (MFR), residue urine volume (RU) in urinary bladder determined by abdominal B-ultrasonography and volume of prostate.
RESULTSAfter being treated for 3 months, the I-PSS, MFR and RU improved remarkably in both groups (P <0.05 or P <0.01), but with no significant change in the volume of prostate, neither with significant difference in comparison between the two groups (P >0.05).
CONCLUSIONFWCG has a good effect with less adverse reaction in treating BPH.

Partial nature of "promoting blood circulation and dieresis" of Salvia Miltiorrhizain was initially demonstrated by investigating the regulation effect of AQP2 expression in kidney of trauma blood stasis model rats with the Salvia Miltiorrhizain so as to provide guidance for its clinical deployment of administration. Random allocation was taken to averagely divide 30 SD rats into two groups: 10 rats in normal group and 20 rats in blood stasis syndrome group. Trauma blood stasis rat model was established by quantitatively beating. Then the rat model group was divided into model group and salvia group. After 7 days of treatment, the rat kidney AQP2 expression was detected, the content of urine AQP2 was compared and the damaged local muscle and kidney pathological changes were observed by immunohistochemical method and western blot method. Compared with that of the normal group, rats in model group had inflammatory cells infiltration, blood stasis and edema of the injured local muscles and up-regulated AQP2 expression, decreasing urinary output, and kidney tissues blood stasis and edema (P < 0.05). On the other hand, compared with that of the model group, those parameters of rats in salvia group were all decreasing except urine output (P < 0.05). Such result indicated that Salvia Miltiorrhiza can reduce trauma blood stasis rat content of urine AQP2 and down-regulated AQP2 expression in kidney tissue, so as to reduce the reabsorption of water by renal tubular and increase urine output. The promoting blood circulation effect of Salvia Miltiorrhizain can alleviate the degree of the damaged tissue edema and encourage urine drainage. This therapy is closely related to the effect of regulating AQP2 in kidney by salvia, so the purpose of this study by verifying "promoting blood circulation and diuresis" as the mechanism for the regulation effect of the salvia on AQP2 expression.

China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2003;28(3):250-253
OBJECTIVETo observe the effect of the Niaoduqing Tablet(NDT) on the diuresis in normal rats and the hemorheology in rats of blood stasis and compare it with the Niaoduqing Granule(NDG), so as to provide some laboratory data for the clinic application and innovation of the dosage forms.
METHODDiuretic effect of the NDT on experimental rats burthened with 1% Sodium deoxycholate was observed by using the metabolize cage examination. The changes of whole blood and plasma viscosity in the blood-stasis rat-model were measured with Viscometer-R80. Plasma was separated and fibrinogen measured by using the turbidimetric method.
RESULTEvery dose of NDT had the diuretic effect on experiment rats, but only the big and middle dose increasing the urine quantity in 6 hours had the significance. Each dose could reduce the viscosity of whole blood and the fibrinogen in the blood-stasis rat model, and had the superiority to NDG.
CONCLUSIONSNDT has the diuretic effect and can ameliorate the hemorheology in the blood-stasis rat model, which may delay the course of the chronic renal failure (CRF).

"Tinglizi", the ripe seed of Descurainia sophia and Lepidium apetalum, is a member of Brassicaceae (Cruciferae). Traditionally, the former is called "Nantinglizi" (Descurainiae Semen) while the latter is called "Beitinglizi" (Lepidii Semen). In the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, it has the power to purge lung-fire, relieve dyspnea, promote diuresis and reduce edema, and it is mainly indicated in a case with phlegm-fluid accumulation, cough with excessive sputum, dyspnea with being unable to lie, and general swelling. In view of its wide-spread application in clinic, a comprehensive review of Lepidii Semen and Descurainiae Semen was conducted from the following aspects: herbalogical study, variety identification, historical evolution of processing, chemical constituents, pharmacological effects, quantitative determination and toxicity which could provide reference for further research and development of "Tinglizi".

China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2011;36(23):3349-3352
OBJECTIVETo observe the effect of Tiangou Jiangya capsule on isolated rabbit aortic strips, and to discuss its antihypertensive mechanism.
METHODThe isolated rabbit aortic strips were placed in perfusion baths, and induced to contract by norepinephrine (NE), KCl and CaCl2 respectively, then Tiangou Jiangya capsule extraction was added to observe its effect on the contraction. The effect on intracellular Ca2+ dependent contraction and extracellular Ca2+ dependent contraction induced by NE were also studied.
RESULTThe Tiangou Jiangya capsule (1, 3, 5 g x L(-1)) can reduce the largest contract reaction of aortic strips induced by NE or CaCl2 (P < 0.01). It can reduce both intracellular Ca2+ dependent contraction and extracellular Ca2+ dependent contraction induced by NE (P < 0.01), and the effect on extracellular Ca2+ dependent contraction is more significant. But the Tiangou Jiangya capsule has no significant effect on KCl induced contraction.
CONCLUSIONTiangou Jiangya capsule can regulate intracellular Ca2+ concentration and help to relax the vascular smooth muscle. The mechanism could be regulating the receptor-operated Ca2+ channel. The effect on extracellular Ca2+ dependent contraction is more obvious than on intracellular Ca2+ dependent contraction induced by NE.

Two patients with post-traumatic diabetes insipidus (DI) are reported. One had suffered a fatal injury and the other a mild contusion without amnesia before DI developed. These two instances exemplify the wide spectrum of post-traumatic DI and, hence, the importance of ruling out DI even afer a mild closed-head injury.

To investigate the urination-reducing effect and mechanism of Zhuangyao Jianshen Wan (ZYJCW). In this study, SI rats were subcutaneously injected with 150 mg · kg(-1) dose of D-galactose to prepare the sub-acute aging model and randomly divided into the model group, the Suoquan Wan group (1.17 g · kg(-1) · d(-1)), and ZYJCW high, medium and low dose groups (2.39, 1.20, 0.60 g · kg(-1) · d(-1)) , with normal rats in the blank group. They were continuously administered with drugs for eight weeks. The metabolic cage method was adopted to measure the 24 h urine volume and 5 h water load urine volume in rats. The automatic biochemistry analyzer was adopted to detect urine concentrations of Na+, Cl-, K+. The ELISA method was used to determine serum aldosterone (ALD) and antidiuretic hormone (ADH). The changes in P2X1 and P2X3 mRNA expressions in bladder tissues of rats were detected by RT-PCR. According to the results, both ZYJCW high and medium dose groups showed significant down-regulations in 24 h urine volume and 5 h water load urine volume in (P <0.05, P <0.01), declines in Na+ and Cl- concentrations in urine (P <0.01), notable rises in plasma ALD and ADH contents (P <0.05, P <0.01) and remarkable down-regulations in the P2X1 and P2X3 mRNA expressions in bladder tissues (P <0.01). The ZYJCW low dose group revealed obvious reductions in Na+ and Cl- concentrations in urine (P <0.01). The results indicated that ZYJCW may show the urination-reducing effect by down-regulating the P2X1 and P2X3 mRNA expressions in bladder tissues of rats with diuresis caused by kidney deficiency.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of Tiangou Jiangya capsule on blood pressure of spontaneous hypertensive rats.
METHODThe 13-14 week SPF rats were selected and randomly divided into model groups, the low, middle, high dose of Tiangou Jiangya capsule groups, positive control group administrated with captopril. Drugs were intragastric administrated once per day, lasting four weeks. The blood pressure, heart rate, heart ventricle indexes, urinary volume and the level of PRA,angiotensing II (Ang II), aldosterone (ALD) of rats were observed.
RESULTThe low, middle, high dose of Tiangou Jiangya capsule can remarkably reduce the systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and mean arterial pressure of spontaneous hypertensive rats (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). The low, middle dose can reduce the heart rate of rats (P < 0.01). The low dose can effectively inhibit the left ventricle indexes (P < 0.05). The Tiangou Jiangya capsule has no markedly effects on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) activity and urinary output of rats.
CONCLUSIONThe results indicate that the Tiangou Jiangya capsule has evident effect of lowering blood pressure of rats, which is related to reducing heart rate, heart ventricle indexes, and has no effect on the RAAS and diuresis.
