PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of Artemisia A. Smoke(Ssukjahun) on primary dysmenorrhea. METHOD: This study was a pretestposttest design with a nonequivalent control group. Data were collected from May 1, 2007 to May 27, 2008. A total of 40 women with dysmenorrhea participated in the study. Among them, 20 women were assigned to an experimental group and the other 20 to a control group. Artemisia A. Smoke(Ssukjahun) was provided daily for 4 days, starting 7 days prior to next expected menses in the experimental group. The instruments used in this study included MDQ (Moos' Menstrual Distress Questionnaire) by Kim (1995), Visual Analogue Scale by Keele (1948), and PGF2alpha by urine. RESULT: The results of this study are as follows; The experimental group was lower than the control group in the degree of menstrual distress (t=5.25, p=0.000), intensity of dysmenorrhea (t=7.71, p=0.000), and prostaglandin F2alpha levels (t=4.56, p=0.000). CONCLUSION: Artemisia A. Smoke (Ssukjahun) was proved as an effective nursing intervention to reduce dysmenorrhea in young women. Its convenience and accessibility may make it a useful intervention in nursing practice and education.

5.Effect of Latanoprost on the Cultured Human Uveal Melanocytes.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2001;42(6):893-897
PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of latanoprost on the melanogenesis and endogenous PG release. METHODS: Primarily cultured uveal human melanocytes were exposed to 0.1 micrometer, 1 micrometer, and 10 micrometer of PhXA85 and also co-exposured with 1 micrometer of indomethacine or hydrocortisone, the melanin content of each melanocyte was measured with spectrophotometer after 1 week. RESULTS: After 1 week, the melanin content of each melanocyte was increased with 1 micrometer, 10 micrometer of PhXA85(p<0.05). After co-exposure with indomethacine or hydrocortisone, the amount of increased melanin content was less than that of PhXA85 alone and statistically significant with 10 micrometer of PhXA85(p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results show that PhXA85 stimulates melanogenesis of cultured human uveal mela-nocytes and also suggests the possibility of exogenous PGF2 alpha-induced release of endogenous prostaglandin.

Journal of the Korean Child Neurology Society 2002;10(2):235-241
PURPOSE: Intracerebroventricular injection of prostaglandin(PG) in the central nervous system is accompanied by a decrease in convulsions, a modulation of recurrences of seizures. Therefore, we observed the change of prostaglandin F2alpha(PGF2alpha) according to temperatures in the first febrile convulsions, and the relationship between the recurrence of febrile convulsions. METHODS: 93 patients with febrile convulsions recurrence could be studied for 42 months. All CSF samples were analyzed. During febrile convulsions, no anticonvulsant was used. We analyzed the recurrences of febrile convulsion according to PGF2alpha levels. RESULTS: The levels of PGF2alpha during 3 months recurrence group were 194.9+/-89.7 pg/mL, those during 4-6 months were 224.0+/-104.4 pg/mL, those during 7-9 months were 101.9+/-46.0 pg/mL, those during 10-12 months were 195.7+/-77.5 pg/mL, those during 13-18 months were 182.4+/-91.1 pg/mL, those during 19-24 months were 359.8+/-284.1 pg/mL, those during 25-36 months were 215.5+/-14.8 pg/mL and those during 37-42 months were 191.5+/-5.0 pg/mL. CONCLUSION: Elevated concentrations of PGF2alpha in febrile convulsions were found and not related to the increasing rate of fever. In the recurrent groups of febrile convulsions, there was no relationship between PGF2alpha levels and recurrences time of febrile convulsions except 7-9 months recurrence group. Although the exact mechanism of recurrence of febrile convulsion is unclear, we think that more consistent study of this recurrence is important to clarify the role of prostaglandin in the first febrile convulsion and the relationship to recurrences of febrile convulsions.

8.Study on Contractile Responses Induced by Anoxia in Porcine Cerebral Artery.

Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society 1995;24(6):623-630
This study was designed to observe anoxia-induced responses and to clarify their possible mechanisms in porcine basilar and circle of Willis arteries. Anoxia produced a transient vasoconstriction, which then recovered to the basal tension of a 3-5 min. later, and the reoxygenation that follows produced the biphasic(relaxation-contraction) response in the intact endothelial rings under resting tension. The anoxia-induced contraction was potentiated by pretreatment with KC1 and PGF2alpha. Reoxygenation produced only sustained relaxation. Removal of the endothelium and pretreatment with nimodipine or indomethacine markedly attenuated the anoxia-induced contractions. Anoxia transiently and significantly increased cyclic GMP contents in the endothelium-intact preparations, but did not affect them in the endothelium-removed ones. The above results suggest that anoxia-induced contraction is endothelium-dependent and is resultant to the release of a Prostaglandin-like substance(s) .

Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society 1988;17(1):19-28
Preliminary in vitro experiments were performed to define the contraction effects of the serotonin and prostaglandin F2 alpha in cat's internal carotid artery. Subsquently 12 cats were used to study changes in contractility resulting from pretreatment with reserpine. The arteries, which were exposed to serotonin and prostaglandin F2 alpha contracted significantly just after exposure time. And by addition of higher concentrated serotonin and prostaglandin F2 alpha more contractions were noted. Arteries isolated from reserpine-pretreated cats responded to the serotonin and prostaglandin F2 alpha with similar pattern to those seen in control groups, but the contractility showed some what more decreased slope compared to those with high concentration of serotonin only. These results suggested that reserpine might have yet unknown effects which were different from known mechnism of serotonin to cerebral arteries.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate whether the differences of PG concentration in follicular and peritoneal fluid during preovulatory phase exist between the women with and without endometriosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-three patients with endometriosis, 8 were stage I-II and 15 were stage III-IV, and another 23 patients without endometriosis were undergone laparotomy during late follicular phase. Peritoneal fluid from 46 patients and follicular fluid from 42 patients were obtained, and these samples were analyzed double times for PGF2alpha, PGE2 and estradiol. RESULTS: The mean level of PGF2alphain the peritoneal fluid was significantly higher in the group with endometriosis than in the control(P=0.0293), especially more significant in stage I-II endometriosis. Although there was no significant difference of PGF2alphaconcentration in the follicular fluid between the groups, the stage III-IV endometriosis group showed slightly higher PGF2alphalevel than both the stage I-II group and the control(P=0.0604). And also, there was significant positive correlation with the level of PGF2alphaand estradiol in the follicular fluid only in the endometriosis group(r=0.4988, P=0.0154), not in the control. However, there was no difference in the level of PGE2 and estradiol in the peritoneal or follicular fluid between the groups. CONCLUSION: Some alterations of PGF2alphalevel exist in the women with endometriosis. These are significantly higher PGF2alphalevel in peritoneal fluid with mild endometriosis and slightly higher PGF2alphalevels in follicular fluid with extensive endometriosis during preovulatory phase, which suggest that PGF2alphamay play some roles in subfertility associated with endometriosis.
