Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of holmium laser lithotripsy for ureteral stones. Methods A total of 238 patients with ureteral stones (upper segment, 60 patients; middle segment, 93; lower segment, 85) received the holmium laser lithotripsy under a semi-rigid ureteropyeloscope. Results Stones were successfully fragmented on one session in 97.1% of patients (231/238). The success rate was 91.7% in patients with stones in the upper ureteral segment (55/60) and 98.9% in patients with stones in the!mid-lower ureteral segment (176/178). Five patients with bilateral ureteral stones associated with acute renal failure and anuria returned to normal rapidly. No complications such as perforation or severe trauma were encountered during the operation. The postoperative hospital stay of the 231 patients was 1~2 days (mean, 1.3 days). Follow-up for 0.5~12 months (mean, 4.1 months) revealed a stone-free rate of 98.7% (228/231). No stricture of the ureter was found. Conclusions Holmium: YAG laser lithotripsy is effective, mini-invasive and safe. It is indicated as the first choice in the treatment of ureteral stones, especially stones located in the mid-lower ureteral segment.

Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice 2002;8(9):532-533
ObjectiveTo study basic pattern of normal youth in gait analysis.Methods28 healthy young persons as experimental subjects were studied. The gait analysis system based on digital video and digital image processing was employed to obtain kinematic parameters.ResultsThe means and standard deviations of kinematic parameters of normal youth were obtained. The differences of gait patterns between males and females were compared. The correlations between gait parameters and height, weight were analyzed respectively. Conclusions It is recommended that the values of the gait parameters and the trends obtained can be used as a standard gait pattern of normal youth. Statistically significant differences exist between the males and the females for most of the gait parameters. Furthermore, the differences of the values of gait parameters between the males and the females are not led only by the difference of height except very few parameters.

This article was aimed to rapidly analyze chemical composition in A loe Barbadensis Mill, and to compare the chemical composition of commercial aloe vera medicinal materials with that of fresh aloe yellow exudate. An opti-mized liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-ion trap-time-of-flight (LCMS-IT-TOF) method was applied for the analysis of commercial aloe vera medicinal materials and fresh aloe yellow exudates. The Agilent TC-C18 column (4.6 í 250 mm, 5 m) was used. The gradient elution was a solvent system of water(A)-methanol(B). ESI source was operated in both positive and negative ion modes. The results showed that chromones, pyrones, naphthalene deriva-tive, anthrones and anthraquinones were separated successfully, 30 compounds were characterized by the comparison of characteristic MS/MS fragment ions data with the literature. The diagnostic fragmentation patterns of different chemical compositions were also discussed on the basis of EST-IT-TOF MS data. It was concluded that the chemical composition of commercial aloe vera medicinal materials were significantly different from that of fresh aloe yellow ex-udate in terms of types and contents: the former one mainly contains isoaloeresin D and aloin, and few aloesin; but the latter is mainly composed of aloesin and aloin, and the content of aloesin is the highest. The LCMS-IT-TOF analysis can be used to rapidly obtain rich structural information of different chemical compositions, which improves the efficiency of qualitative analysis of chemical composition, and is of great significance to the quality control, eval-uation and the utilization of A loe Barbadensis Mill.

Background:Fenretinide, which is capable of generating reactive oxygen species( ROS ),has emerged as a promising antineoplastic agent based on numerous in vitro and in vivo studies and clinical chemoprevention trials. Preliminary studies showed that fenretinide could induce apoptosis in human hepatocellular carcinoma( HCC)cells in vitro, however, the precise mechanism was not clarified. Aims:To elucidate the effect of ROS on apoptosis of human HCC cells induced by fenretinide and the underlying mechanism. Methods:Human HCC cell line Huh-7 was treated with antioxidant vitamin E,fenretinide or their combination, respectively. ROS in live cells was evaluated by confocal microscopy and flow cytometry;cell viability and apoptosis were assessed by CellTiter-Glo Luminescent Cell Viability Assay Kit and Caspase-Glo3/7 Assay Kit;expression and intracellular localization of nuclear receptor Nur77,as well as expression of stress-induced transcription factor GADD153 were measured by immunofluorescence staining and Western blotting, respectively. Results:Vitamin E pretreatment fully blocked the fenretinide-induced ROS production. In Huh-7 cells pretreated with vitamin E,cell apoptosis induced by fenretinide was significantly reduced(P<0. 05). Furthermore, effect of vitamin E pretreatment was noteworthy on reducing fenretinide-induced GADD153 expression, while no significant impact on fenretinide-induced Nur77 expression and translocation was observed. Conclusions:Elimination of ROS by vitamin E can abrogate the pro-apoptotic effect of fenretinide on Huh-7 cells, which indicates the participation of ROS in fenretinide-induced apoptosis of human HCC cells. Its mechanism might be associated with induction of GADD153 protein expression.
